In his May 22, 2025 review, The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager faults the film’s thin characterization, easily solved clues and forgettable set pieces. That makes it a difficult recommendation for viewers hoping for an adventure with the wit and wonder of its inspirations.
What is Fountain of Youth about?
Guy Ritchie’s 2025 action-adventure follows estranged siblings Luke and Charlotte Purdue, played by John Krasinski and Natalie Portman. They join forces on a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth, using their knowledge of history to follow clues. The film’s setup mixes historical puzzles, famous artworks, chases and international exploration—the kind of ingredients that promise a brisk treasure-hunting romp.

Apple lists the film as PG-13. Its cast also includes Eiza González as Esme, along with Domhnall Gleeson, Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, Carmen Ejogo and Stanley Tucci. Apple’s listing gives the runtime as 2 hours 5 minutes.
Why does the adventure fall short?
A familiar template without enough spark
Schager compares the film’s sweeping adventure ambitions to Indiana Jones, but argues that Ritchie does not make the resulting jaunt engaging. The comparison is about the film’s recognizable adventure machinery—a mythic quest, historical riddles, artworks and action set pieces—not a claim that the movies are identical. The problem, in Schager’s view, is that familiar elements do not add up to a distinctive or memorable ride.

Clues and action that do not linger
Schager also criticizes the clues as rapidly solved and the set pieces as cursory or forgettable. Those points cut into the appeal of a story built around deciphering history and moving from one spectacle to another: if puzzles resolve too easily and action leaves little impression, the treasure hunt has less chance to build suspense or a sense of discovery.
A sibling partnership that needs more depth
The estranged-siblings premise gives the story a possible emotional anchor, but Schager faults the characterization. That criticism matters because the leads’ relationship is not just background to the quest; it is the central pairing driving it. A viewer looking for character-rich drama alongside the adventure may find the film’s people less compelling than its premise suggests.

What did the cast hope the film would be?
In an Associated Press interview published May 21, 2025, Krasinski said, “This is the movie I pretended to be in when I was a kid. This is what got me into the business.” Portman described its family-scale appeal: “It’s so rare to get to make a movie that has this scale and this scope of adventure that you can watch with your kids.” González praised the ensemble, saying, “Guy Ritchie gets to work with some of the best cast in the world.” These are promotional-interview comments about the filmmakers’ intentions and experience, not independent assessments of the finished movie or a substitute for Apple’s PG-13 rating.
Is Fountain of Youth worth watching?
For viewers who want a high-concept treasure hunt led by familiar stars, the premise may be enough to justify a stream. But the specific negative assessment available here is substantial: Schager finds the characters underdeveloped, the puzzles too easy and the action too forgettable to make the film’s adventure homage work. If you are choosing a movie for inventive historical mysteries or memorable set pieces, this review’s verdict is to look elsewhere; if the cast and globe-trotting setup are your main draw, you may still be curious.
