Its public release arrived on February 21, 2025, on Apple’s App Store and Google Play after about 18 months of beta testing—not in August 2026. Foto’s proposition is a chronological, ad-free, photo-only feed with hidden public follower and like counts and no forced cropping. The service remains available on iOS and Android in 2026, but it is a focused, smaller alternative to Instagram rather than a one-for-one replacement.

What launched, and when?
Foto’s public versions launched on February 21, 2025. Existing beta users could stay on the beta or move to the public app. Android beta users were told to uninstall the beta before installing the public release, while Apple users could move from TestFlight to the App Store version.
At launch, Foto said more than 16,000 people had tested the service during roughly 1.5 years of beta development. That figure is a historical beta-tester count, not a current active-user total.

What Foto is trying to change
Foto is designed around photography rather than the mixed entertainment feed used by mainstream social platforms. Its stated principles remove several familiar engagement mechanisms:
- Chronological main feed: posts are shown in posting order, according to Foto.
- Photo-only publishing: the service is positioned as video-free, so users share still images rather than Reels or other video formats.
- No public popularity totals: public follower and like counts are hidden. That does not necessarily mean likes or internal engagement signals do not exist.
- No forced cropping: Foto says uploaded images are not forcibly cropped, although that claim does not establish that every file format, resolution, metadata field or display surface is preserved identically.
- No advertising: Foto says it does not sell users’ attention and funds the service through optional subscriptions.
These choices make Foto an alternative for people who want a quieter photography community, not an attempt to reproduce Instagram’s entire video, messaging, commerce and creator ecosystem.

Feed, uploads and discovery
The central experience is a chronological stream of photo posts. Launch materials also described tags and search for discovering photography. Chronological describes the main feed; it does not prove that search, recommendations, notifications or moderation are entirely unranked.

Portfolios
Portfolios are Foto’s curated showcase feature. The roadmap lists Portfolios as launched in August 2025, so descriptions of Foto as having only a bare profile are outdated. The free plan includes one Portfolio; paid plans increase that allowance.
Social and web features
Foto’s roadmap, marked last updated April 2026, lists content moderation, sharing outside Foto, improved Portfolios, browser access, phone Share-button uploading, a redesigned notifications page, mutuals, favorites, mute tags and comment deletion as shipped or completed work.

The captured homepage does not show annual prices, so confirm any annual billing inside the current app or checkout flow. Paid plans primarily add Portfolio capacity and future paid features; they do not promise more reach, followers or algorithmic distribution.
The launch-era Ambassador offer is no longer current
At launch, Foto advertised Ambassador at $5 per month or $50 per year, a $500 lifetime option, plus standard Pro at $6 per month or $60 per year and Pro+ at $10 per month or $100 per year. The Ambassador offer ended March 8, 2025, and should not be presented as current pricing.

Availability and signs of scale
Foto’s official site currently says the app is available on iOS and Android. Store availability, supported operating systems, ratings and prices can vary by country and change over time.
The captured Google Play listing for Foto showed 10K+ downloads, a 4.4-star rating and roughly 500 reviews. It listed an August 13, 2026 update and minimum supported version 0.10.62. Google Play’s 10K+ figure is a download range, not a measure of monthly active users, total registrations or iOS adoption. It should not be combined with the 16,000 beta testers reported in 2025 as though they were the same metric.

Google Play’s developer-provided disclosure says Foto shares no data with third parties, may collect location, personal information and two additional categories, encrypts data in transit and lets users request deletion. Those statements are not an independent privacy audit, so they do not establish that Foto collects no data or is categorically more private than Instagram.

The listing carries a mature 17+ rating and a “Users interact” designation. Foto’s roadmap identifies content moderation as shipped, but the available information does not independently measure how effective or comprehensive that moderation is.
Who should try Foto?
Foto is a strong fit if you want
- A chronological feed instead of an engagement-ranked main stream.
- A still-photography community without video-first publishing.
- Hidden public like and follower totals.
- Images presented without forced cropping.
- An ad-free service with a free entry tier.
- A profile that can be organized into one or more portfolios.
Keep Instagram or use both if you need
- Large established reach and dense existing communities.
- Reels, Stories, live video or other video publishing.
- Mature direct messaging; DMs appear on Foto’s roadmap rather than as a clearly documented launch feature.
- Advanced analytics, advertising, commerce or established creator-monetization tools.
- A fully developed discovery system; Foto lists better search and discovery as ongoing work.
What Foto still has to prove
Foto’s restraint is also its central risk. A smaller network can mean fewer active communities, quieter discovery and less audience for photographers. Long-term confidence will depend on user growth, discovery quality, moderation effectiveness, delivery against the roadmap and whether a small subscription-supported team can sustain development.
For a low-risk trial, start with the free tier and verify the current iOS or Android listing for your region. Review the privacy policy and deletion process before uploading sensitive work, and check that paid features behave as expected across the app and browser before subscribing.
Bottom line
Foto is credible as a focused, photo-first alternative that deliberately removes video, ads, public popularity numbers and algorithmic ranking from the core experience. It is not yet an Instagram replacement for users who depend on scale, messaging, analytics, commerce or video. The free plan makes it easy to test whether a smaller chronological photography network suits you; Pro and Pro+ mainly make sense for photographers who need multiple curated Portfolios.
