Season 4 moves the story to 2003, where the question of who controls the asteroid Goldilocks becomes a fight over whether Mars will remain dependent on Earth. Ed Baldwin and Dev Ayesa’s plan to bring the asteroid into Mars orbit grows out of the colony’s economic stakes, workers’ grievances and the loyalties of people caught between the two worlds. Season 5 premiered on Apple TV on March 27, 2026, so this recap looks back at the events that set up the next chapter.
Where Season 4 leaves the story
The immediate contest over Goldilocks ends with the asteroid redirected into Mars orbit. But the finale does not settle the larger question: whether a growing Happy Valley can shape its own future, or whether Earth will continue to dictate the colony’s priorities and bear down on it with demands for control. The heist succeeds as an act of defiance, while making the political and social consequences harder to avoid.
Season 4 takes place eight years after Season 3, in 2003. Happy Valley has grown from a foothold into a multinational base, and the space program is now focused on capturing and mining valuable asteroids. Sony’s official series page describes that changed setting and the season’s central asteroid-mining premise.
Why Goldilocks matters to Mars
Goldilocks is more than a valuable resource. Whoever controls its mining can influence the colony’s funding and future. Earth wants the asteroid and a say over how it is mined; for Happy Valley, keeping it within reach of Mars offers a chance to strengthen the settlement and reduce its dependence on Earth.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the conflict economic and political at once. Diverting the asteroid is a direct challenge to Earth’s authority, but the potential gains are tied to the lives of people already building the colony. The asteroid’s fictional abundance is a plot stake, not a real-world estimate of value.
How Ed and Dev’s heist becomes a collective rebellion
Ed and Dev make the plan
Ed Baldwin is sidelined from flight duties after developing tremors. He joins forces with Helios founder Dev Ayesa, whose ambitions for Mars align with the plan to redirect Goldilocks into Mars orbit. Their operation is a heist, but its stakes extend beyond the two men: the asteroid could change the balance between the colony and Earth.

Workers and Lee Jung-gil help make it possible
The plan depends on more than its leaders. Helios workers recruited into the effort and North Korean astronaut Lee Jung-gil help it succeed. Their involvement gives the operation a broader meaning: Happy Valley’s future is being shaped by people with different backgrounds and interests, not simply by the governments and executives arguing over the asteroid.
Why the Happy Valley riot matters
Miles Dale travels to Mars hoping to earn more for his family. Instead, he finds a gap between what workers were promised and what they experience. That resentment toward Helios and Earth-based authority helps drive the riot at Happy Valley.

The labor conflict is not separate from the Goldilocks plot. A colony cannot become independent simply by gaining access to a resource; it also has to confront who does the work, who benefits and who gets to make decisions. The riot makes those tensions visible and gives the season’s political struggle a human cost.
What happens to Danielle and Margo
Danielle returns to Earth
Danielle Poole is caught between institutional duty and her friendships in the colony. During the riot, she is shot. The community rallies to help her survive, and she eventually returns to Earth to be with her family. Her departure leaves the colony’s conflict unresolved rather than offering an easy reconciliation between loyalty to an institution and loyalty to people.

Margo chooses Aleida and the Mars plan
Margo Madison learns that Irina arranged Sergei’s murder. She then helps undermine Earth’s effort to keep Goldilocks away from Mars. By taking responsibility for the code that enables the plan, she protects Aleida, but she is arrested. Her choice makes the asteroid operation personal as well as political: she acts against Irina and risks her own freedom to help Aleida and the Mars effort.

The finale resolves the immediate question of where Goldilocks will go, but not the consequences of a stronger Happy Valley. The colony’s growth, Earth’s desire for control and the people’s demands for fair treatment remain in tension. The final outcome is therefore both a victory for the Mars plan and the beginning of a more difficult argument about what independence should mean.

The show’s decade-long jumps also mean that a new season is not simply the next day in the same conflict. Co-creator and co-showrunner Matt Wolpert told TheWrap that the writers must build out what changed in the world and the characters across those years. In discussing the finale’s Earth–Mars communication delay, co-creator Ben Nedivi said they chose to “embrace the delay a little bit” rather than break the reality of the setting. Those choices help explain why the next chapter can begin with a changed social order, not just resume the previous season’s action. Read the creators’ Season 4 finale interview with TheWrap.
Season 5 is already available
The original “before it returns” framing is outdated: Apple TV’s series page lists Season 5 as premiered March 27, 2026. Apple announced a 10-episode season running through May 29, 2026, and renewed the series for a sixth and final season. Season 5’s synopsis describes Happy Valley as a colony with thousands of residents and a base for further missions, while Earth’s demand for law and order adds to friction with Mars. These are Season 5 details, not unresolved Season 4 events. Apple says the first four seasons stream globally on Apple TV; see the series page and renewal announcement.
