Joe Burkett killed Claire Walker after she uncovered his family’s crimes and the Burkett pharmaceutical company’s alleged wrongdoing. Maya later killed Joe; Judith’s nanny-cam footage of him was a deepfake, not proof he was alive. In the finale, Neil kills Maya during her confrontation with the Burketts, but the meeting has been livestreamed. Eighteen years later, Lily names her newborn daughter Maya.
Why did Joe kill Claire?
Claire worked at Burkett Pharmaceuticals and began investigating alleged falsification of drug trials and the marketing of harmful drugs. She teamed up with Corey, known as the Whistle, and uncovered more about the family’s history, including Joe’s role in the deaths of Theo Mora and Andrew Burkett. Joe discovered her investigation and killed her, making the scene look like a robbery.

Claire’s murder is tied to a longer pattern of violence and concealment. Joe had helped cause Theo’s death during a hazing incident, then killed Andrew to silence him. The family paid yacht captain Tommy Dark for years because of what he knew about Andrew’s death; Joe also killed Tommy when he became a risk. Netflix’s finale explainer lays out how these crimes connect.
Was Joe really alive on the nanny cam?
No. Judith suspected Maya was hiding the truth about Joe’s death and arranged for household staff to make a deepfake from wedding footage. The apparent sighting was meant to unsettle Maya and prompt her to reveal what she knew. It was not evidence that Joe had survived.

Who killed Joe?
Maya killed Joe. Once she learned he had murdered Claire, she called him to their meeting place in the park, confronted him, and shot him. She told police Joe had died in a mugging. Rambo witnessed the shooting and later reported it; evidence linking bullets from the two murders also helped lead to Maya’s arrest, according to Netflix’s recap of the ending.
What happens to Maya in the finale?
After Sami learns Maya killed Joe, Maya confesses and explains why. Sami, Maya, and Corey arrange a nanny camera and livestream to expose the Burketts. Maya confronts Judith and her children about the family’s efforts to suppress the pharmaceutical scandal and Joe’s crimes. Judith offers to help cover up Joe’s murder, but Maya refuses. Neil takes Maya’s gun and kills her.

The confrontation has been livestreamed, so the family’s conduct and secrets are exposed. The finale’s outcome is both a personal reckoning for Maya and a public revelation of what the Burketts had concealed.
What does the final scene mean?
The story jumps ahead 18 years. Sami and Eddie visit Lily in hospital after she gives birth to a daughter named Maya. The time jump and name are explicit; the scene’s broader meaning is open to interpretation. It closes on the next generation and the continuing personal legacy of the events.

Is the ending different in the book?
The series adapts Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name, but this explanation covers the Netflix screen version; details should not be assumed to match the book. The novel is an optional companion, not necessary for understanding the series. For an adaptation comparison, see Women’s Health’s ending recap and the excerpt on Harlan Coben’s official site.
Netflix lists Fool Me Once as a 2024 limited series with eight episodes and names Michelle Keegan, Adeel Akhtar, and Richard Armitage among its stars. Its series listing summarizes the eighth episode as Maya confronting her husband’s family while Kierce seeks help from Corey. Netflix’s production announcement says the story was relocated from the United States to the United Kingdom; filming took place in Manchester and northwest England.
