There is no verified, official chronology that places every FNAF game, book, and film into one definitive sequence. The most careful answer is a games-first fan synthesis: keep the game story separate from other media, and treat disputed dates and placements as interpretations rather than confirmed canon.
Release order is not story order
FNAF games were released over time, but a chronological timeline tries to arrange their story events in the order they happen within the fiction. Those are different orders. A game’s release date does not, by itself, establish when its events occur in the story.
This distinction matters because clues across the games can invite competing interpretations. A fan timeline can organize those clues, but it is not an official chronology unless the games or another primary source establish the sequence. The available evidence does not support a precise, year-by-year ordering for every game.
A cautious, games-first chronology
The most accurate chronology supported here is a framework, not a definitive list of dated events. The table distinguishes what can be said from what remains interpretation; it does not imply a sequence where one has not been established.

| Timeline question | What can be said | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Which game events come first? | No complete, primary-source-verified sequence is established by the sources available for this guide. | Use a proposed order as a fan interpretation, not confirmed canon. |
| Can every event be assigned a year? | No. The available evidence does not substantiate exact dates or placements for every event. | Label a date as inferred or disputed whenever the evidence does not directly establish it. |
| Do the books belong in the game timeline? | Not automatically. Fan-maintained timelines distinguish the games from the novel trilogy and the Fazbear Frights books, and whether some book material shares game continuity is debated. | Keep book timelines separate unless a specific continuity link is established. |
| Does the film belong in the game timeline? | Blumhouse describes the film as based on the game series. That identifies it as an adaptation, not as evidence that its events share the games’ continuity. | Treat the film as its own continuity unless an authoritative source establishes otherwise. |
How to read a proposed game order
- Direct evidence: A date or sequence explicitly shown or stated in a game is stronger than a date inferred from a clue.
- Inference: An interpretation that connects clues may be useful, but should be identified as a fan reading.
- Dispute: If timeline guides place an event differently, do not present one placement as settled merely because it appears in a proposed chronology.
Why books and films should stay in separate timelines
A shared franchise name does not prove shared continuity. The community-maintained timeline overview treats the games, novels, Fazbear Frights, and movies as separate timeline categories, while noting debate about whether some material connects to the games. Blumhouse’s description of the movie as based on the game series supports calling it an adaptation; it does not establish that the film’s story occurs within the game chronology.
For the same reason, an all-media reading order should not be presented as a single in-universe timeline without clear evidence for each connection. A work can be part of the same franchise and still tell a story in a separate continuity.

What a guidebook can—and cannot—settle
Scholastic presents The Freddy Files (Updated Edition) as an official guidebook by Scott Cawthon, updated with material exploring Pizzeria Simulator and Ultimate Custom Night. It can serve as a physical companion for revisiting game details, but the publisher’s description does not establish it as a definitive chronological authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unresolved
The evidence available for this guide does not settle every game’s exact placement, provide a verified year for every event, or validate one complete sequence across all franchise media. A reliable timeline should therefore identify which entries rely on direct in-game evidence and which are approximate or disputed. Until an authoritative source resolves those questions, any fully dated chronology should be read as a fan synthesis.
