Yes. A Netflix movie or episode downloaded in advance can usually play on a plane without cellular service, Wi‑Fi, or any internet connection. The download must be complete, stored on a supported phone or tablet, still valid, and associated with an account that remains signed in. Netflix plays it from the app’s Downloads section—not as a transferable video file.
The safest approach is to download several titles at home, test them with both Wi‑Fi and mobile data turned off, and keep a backup. Airline crew instructions still determine when and how your device may be used.
The five-minute answer
- Connect your device to reliable Wi‑Fi before leaving.
- Download a movie or episodes that show Netflix’s Download icon.
- Wait until every download is complete and visible under Downloads.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and cellular data, then start each title once before boarding.
- Keep at least one backup movie or several extra episodes.
Do not depend on ordinary Netflix streaming over onboard Wi‑Fi. Aircraft connections may be unavailable, restricted, too slow for video, or unable to support the service.

- Update the Netflix app and sign in while online.
- Open the movie’s title page.
- Tap the Download icon.
- Wait for the progress indicator to finish.
- Open Netflix > Downloads and select the movie.
- With Wi‑Fi and cellular data disabled, tap Play to verify it works.

Downloading episodes or a season
Open a series page and tap the download icon beside an episode. Where Netflix offers it, choose Download Season. Each episode uses storage and counts as an individual download, so check free space before preparing a long trip. Download more viewing time than the flight requires, but leave enough storage for the device to operate normally.
How to watch Netflix in airplane mode
- Open the Netflix app before or after takeoff, following crew instructions.
- Tap Downloads.
- Choose the saved movie or episode.
- Tap Play.
Airplane mode is not a special Netflix requirement; it is the most reliable way to confirm that playback is genuinely offline. Keep the Netflix app installed, avoid signing out, and do not assume a download can be opened by another video player. Netflix says you must remain signed in, and downloads are available on the device that downloaded them. Any Netflix profile on that device may access the download subject to profile restrictions.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?

Netflix does not make every movie or show downloadable. Download rights can be different from streaming rights because of another company’s exclusive license, a provider’s restrictions, regional agreements, popularity, cost, or seasonal and localized considerations. Even a production marketed as a Netflix Original may have outside rights holders that prevent downloads in a particular country.

If the icon is missing, try another title rather than assuming the app is broken. See Netflix’s explanation of download availability, then update the app and operating system, check device limits, and download a backup while you still have internet.
How long does a Netflix download last?
Downloads are temporary. Netflix does not publish one universal 30-day or 48-hour rule for every title. Expiration varies, and the app may warn when a download is close to expiring. Some titles also have a maximum number of downloads permitted in a year.
If you see Yearly Download Limit Reached, the restriction is title-specific. You may still be able to stream that title online, but you should choose another movie or series for the flight. Netflix’s explanation is available at Yearly Download Limit Reached.
Plan and device limits
Netflix’s current help pages state that ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the plan’s permitted download devices. The ad-supported plan allows 15 total downloads per device per calendar month; that counter resets on the first day of the next month. Plan rules can change, so check your account before preparing a large library.

Downloads are also tied to the device used to create them. They are not ordinary MP4 files that can be copied to a USB drive, SD card, laptop, or another phone. If Netflix says you have downloads on too many devices, use the app’s account controls to remove one:
- Tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name.
- Tap Account.
- Under Devices, choose Mobile download devices.
- Remove an old device.

International flights require extra caution
Netflix warns that the catalog, download availability, audio, and subtitles can differ when you are in another country. Existing downloads on a phone or tablet may not remain available after a device connects abroad. That makes international itineraries a higher-risk case than a domestic flight.

What to do when offline playback fails
“Expired”
Reconnect while still at home and try to renew or redownload the title if Netflix offers that option. If it cannot be renewed, select another title. Never wait until boarding to discover an expiration.
The Download icon is missing
The title may lack download rights, be unavailable in your region, or be incompatible with the device. Update Netflix and the operating system, check download-device limits, and try a supported phone or tablet.
“Yearly Download Limit Reached”
This applies to that title, not necessarily your entire account. Stream it online later or choose a different download.
“You have downloads on too many devices”
Remove an old mobile download device using the account path above, then download the title again.

The app opens but playback will not start
Confirm that you remain signed in, the file appears under Downloads, and the download completed. Expiration, account inactivity, title restrictions, a country change, storage-management deletion, or an incomplete download can all cause failure. Do not uninstall Netflix or sign out immediately before travel.
Your membership was canceled
Netflix says canceling the account deletes downloads from the device. Restarting membership does not restore those files; download them again.
Netflix versus other in-flight entertainment

- Update Netflix and the device operating system.
- Confirm your membership is active and you are signed in.
- Use Wi‑Fi to download at least two titles.
- Check storage and wait for complete downloads.
- Verify each title has a Download icon and appears in Downloads.
- Test playback with Wi‑Fi and cellular data turned off.
- Carry wired headphones or fully charged Bluetooth headphones.
- Charge the device and bring a permitted power bank.
- Follow the airline’s instructions for device use.
