Stand facing it, make yourself look larger, and if it attacks, fight back without turning your back.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) describes panther encounters as relatively rare, especially outside rural parts of southwest Florida. Knowing the correct sequence matters more than carrying a special product or attempting to approach the animal for a photograph.
What to do the moment you see a Florida panther
Use the following sequence whether you are on a trail, near a rural home, or looking out from a yard. The objective is to avoid triggering a chase response while leaving the panther room to move away.
- Keep children within sight and close. Bring children beside you rather than allowing them to wander, run, or hide behind vegetation.
- Give the panther space. Do not advance toward it. Leave a route it can use to get away, and avoid blocking that route with your body or a vehicle door.
- Do not run. Running can turn a tense sighting into a pursuit. Remain where you are and control your movements.
- Stand and face the animal. Keep your body oriented toward the panther so you can monitor its position without turning your back.
- Do not crouch or bend over. Stay upright. Bending can make you appear smaller and can put your face or neck closer to the animal’s level.
- Make yourself look larger. Open a jacket, raise your arms, and use your full upright posture. The goal is to present a larger silhouette while still facing the panther.
- If it attacks, fight back. Use whatever is at hand, including stones or branches, while continuing to face the animal. Do not turn your back.
These are the FWC’s encounter instructions; they are not a menu of competing techniques. Follow them calmly rather than adding improvised actions such as chasing, cornering, or trying to touch the animal.

Why a sighting does not automatically mean an attack is coming
The Florida panther is federally endangered and one of Florida’s two native cat species. FWC says the population primarily occurs in peninsular Florida south of Orlando. Adult panthers are described as 5–7 feet long and 60–160 pounds, figures that describe the species rather than predict the behavior of an individual animal. See the agency’s profile at Florida Panther.
Panthers tend to be most active between dusk and dawn, so a low-light sighting may occur when people are walking pets, checking livestock, or driving rural roads. Activity at those hours is context, not evidence that an animal intends to approach a person.
FWC’s wording is precise: “Encounters with Florida panthers are relatively rare but do occur, particularly in rural parts of southwest Florida.” The agency does not provide a person-attack rate in the guidance used here, so no reliable percentage or personal probability can be assigned to a sighting. A healthy panther seen in a neighborhood is not necessarily cause for alarm, but it should still be given room and reported through the appropriate channel.
If the panther moves toward you or attacks
When the animal closes the distance
Keep facing the panther and maintain your upright, larger appearance. Do not crouch, run, or turn away. If you can move without approaching the animal, preserve the space between you and its escape route; do not attempt to herd it, surround it, or force it into a corner.
When an attack begins
Fight back immediately with whatever is available. FWC specifically mentions throwing stones or branches while facing the animal. Use objects within reach rather than turning to retrieve something, and do not turn your back during the struggle. The agency’s instruction is to resist, not to play dead or attempt a specialized wrestling technique.
Keep the response focused on stopping the attack and creating separation. Once the animal disengages, do not follow it for a closer look or a photograph. Move away only when you can do so without running toward the panther or blocking its escape.

What to report, and which FWC contact to use
Reporting depends on the animal’s condition. A healthy sighting and an animal that may need intervention follow different routes.
| Situation | What to do | Official route |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy panther sighting or tracks | Record the location and basic details from a safe distance. Do not approach to obtain a better photograph. | Use FWC’s online sighting-report process described on Living with Panthers. |
| Sick, injured, or dead panther or bobcat | Keep away from the animal and report the condition promptly. | Call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). From a mobile phone, dial *FWC or #FWC. Details are on Report a sick, injured, or dead panther or bobcat. |
Do not approach a healthy panther to confirm its identity, take a closer image, or make it move for a better view. Distance protects you and prevents your actions from changing the animal’s behavior. A report made from a safe location is more useful than a risky photograph.
Protecting pets and small livestock at home
Home precautions are separate from the response to an encounter. FWC recommends keeping pets and backyard hobby animals indoors or in a predator-resistant enclosure, particularly at night, when panthers are often active.
What counts as a genuinely secure enclosure
FWC’s detailed guidance sets construction criteria rather than endorsing a particular brand or model. An enclosure should be fully enclosed, including a roof. The roof may be solid or made from heavy-gauge fencing such as chain link that can support 200 pounds. That load figure applies to the roof material’s specified support capacity; it is not a panther-weight estimate or an attack statistic.
- Secure the sides flush with the ground.
- Eliminate gaps, weak spots, and openings that an animal could exploit.
- Ensure the roof is part of the enclosure, not an uncovered run.
- Inspect gates, joins, and ground edges regularly for loosened sections.
A product label alone does not establish that these conditions are met. Compare any kennel or pen against the full-enclosure, roof-load, ground-contact, and gap requirements.
How to compare a kennel or pen
When evaluating an enclosure, check the actual construction rather than relying on terms such as “predator resistant.” First confirm that every side and the top are covered. Next verify that the roof material is heavy-gauge and rated to support the 200-pound load FWC specifies, or use a solid roof. Finally, examine how the sides meet the ground and look for openings at doors, corners, joins, and below the fencing. A structure that passes only one of these checks is not equivalent to the fully enclosed barrier FWC describes.

Keep the enclosure maintained after installation. A gate that no longer latches, a section lifted by erosion, or a gap created under a panel can defeat an otherwise sound design. The guidance is performance-based: the entire housing must remain closed, secured, and free of exploitable weak spots.
Additional measures FWC lists
- Electric fencing: FWC lists fencing about two feet high around animal pens as an option to consider.
- Vegetation management: Clear vegetation that provides concealment near pens and animal areas.
- Wildlife feeding: Do not feed wildlife, which can draw animals toward homes and create repeated encounters.
- Motion-activated lighting: Lighting may help you see what is happening, but FWC says it will not deter a panther. Treat it as a visibility aid, not as protection during an encounter.
- Secure housing: Bring pets inside or use the fully enclosed, secured pen, especially overnight.
Common mistakes to avoid
Running or turning away
Running conflicts directly with FWC’s advice. Even if the panther appears to be moving off, keep facing it until you have a safe way to leave and are no longer blocking its route.
Crouching to look smaller
Do not kneel, bend, or crouch for a photograph or to pick something up while the animal is nearby. Remain upright and use your open jacket or raised arms to look larger.
Approaching for proof
A close photograph is not worth reducing the animal’s escape space. Report a sighting from a safe distance instead of following the panther or trying to draw it into view.

Assuming a light is a deterrent
FWC’s specific warning matters: motion-activated lighting can improve visibility but will not deter a panther. Do not substitute a light for secure housing or treat it as a response tool once an encounter has started.
Inventing a numerical risk
The available FWC encounter guidance calls sightings relatively rare but does not state a person-attack frequency. Avoid claims that a sighting carries a particular percentage risk; the official material does not establish one.

A practical household plan
Discuss the FWC sequence before anyone encounters a panther. Children and other household members should know to stay close to the supervising adult, avoid running, and remain facing the animal. Decide in advance how pets will be moved indoors or into their secure enclosure at night. Keep the FWC reporting numbers available for an injured, sick, or dead animal, and use the online process for a healthy sighting.
Before dusk, check that doors and gates close fully, that no pet is left in an open run, and that vegetation has not created concealment beside the enclosure. If you use lighting, position it to improve your view of the area, while remembering that it is not a panther deterrent. These simple checks support the main safeguard: keeping animals behind a complete, maintained barrier when panthers are most active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe most important preparation is structural: make sure pets are indoors or behind a fully enclosed, ground-secured barrier before dusk. A plan that depends on a light, an open-top pen, or a last-second approach does not meet the safeguards FWC describes.

FWC’s Living with Panthers page supplies the encounter behavior and healthy-sighting reporting information. Its Wildlife Alert guidance gives the hotline route for sick, injured, or dead panthers and bobcats. Species range, size, and activity information comes from the agency’s Florida Panther profile, while enclosure recommendations appear in Protecting Pets and Livestock.
Together, those pages support a clear distinction: give a healthy panther space and an escape route, respond assertively if it attacks, report the animal according to its condition, and protect pets with secure housing rather than relying on deterrent gadgets.

Should I run or crouch if a panther is nearby?
No. FWC advises standing and facing the animal, avoiding crouching or bending, and not running. Keep your body oriented toward the panther while leaving it room to move away.
What should I do if a Florida panther attacks?
Fight back with whatever is at hand, including stones or branches, while facing the animal. Do not turn your back. Do not rely on playing dead or on a specialized technique.
How do I report a panther sighting?
Report a healthy sighting or tracks through FWC’s online sighting-report process, using information gathered from a safe distance. Do not approach for a better photograph. For a sick, injured, or dead panther or bobcat, call 888-404-FWCC (3922), or dial *FWC or #FWC from a mobile phone.
How should I protect pets from Florida panthers?
Keep pets and backyard animals indoors or in a fully enclosed, predator-resistant pen, especially at night. The enclosure should have a solid or heavy-gauge roof able to support 200 pounds, sides secured flush with the ground, and no gaps or weak spots. FWC also lists roughly two-foot electric fencing, vegetation clearing, and not feeding wildlife as measures to consider; motion lighting improves visibility but does not deter panthers.
