What’s actually slowing this PC down?

An FFmpeg input read error is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First identify what FFmpeg is reading and inspect the complete log around the first failure; only then apply recovery settings that match that input protocol. A read failure is different from a failure writing to YouTube, and restarting the process alone can conceal a source or network problem.
1. Identify where the failure occurs
Before changing the command, preserve the full FFmpeg command and the log lines before and after the first error. Record the FFmpeg version/build, the input protocol, whether the input is a file or a live/network source, and whether the process exits, hangs, or continues producing output. The wording “input read error” alone does not identify a universal cause.
- Input-side symptoms: FFmpeg reports trouble reading the source. Investigate that source and its protocol first.
- Output-side symptoms: Messages such as output-write failures, broken pipe, or RTMP errors point to a separate output or YouTube-ingest branch. Do not treat them as proof that the input failed.
There is no reliable one-to-one diagnosis for every error string without the surrounding log and source details. Keep the first failure and preceding context; a later restart message may obscure the original cause.
2. Match recovery settings to the input protocol
If the input is HTTP, FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for disconnections, end-of-file on live or endless streams, network errors, selected HTTP errors, and streamed inputs. It also documents retry and delay limits and a socket I/O timeout. Availability and behavior depend on the protocol and the installed FFmpeg build. These HTTP options are not universal fixes for RTSP, devices, pipes, or local files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Verify the local FFmpeg options
- Check the installed version/build and consult its local help or matching FFmpeg protocol documentation.
- Confirm that the failing input is actually HTTP before using HTTP reconnect options.
- Place input-specific options in the input context—before the relevant
-i—and confirm the resulting command against the documentation for that build. - Use bounded retry counts and delays where appropriate, and retain logs that show whether reconnection is succeeding or repeatedly failing. There is no single retry value established as correct for every source.
Reconnect behavior can help with a transient interruption. It does not repair a source that repeatedly ends, returns errors, or stops delivering packets; unlimited retries can leave a stalled broadcast running without resolving its cause.
3. Test the YouTube output path separately
When practical, test the same source locally or send it to a non-YouTube destination to help separate source-read behavior from YouTube ingest. Then run an instrumented YouTube test and inspect stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement representative of the eventual broadcast and selecting a stream quality the connection can reliably upload.

Check encoder and ingest settings
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS.
These are YouTube encoder and ingest recommendations, not a guaranteed cure for an FFmpeg input read error. A successful ingest configuration cannot by itself establish that the source-reading problem is fixed.
Keep DASH guidance in its lane
Google’s YouTube Live DASH encoding guide recommends setting the PUT timeout 500 milliseconds longer than the segment duration and using randomized binary exponential backoff after failed segment uploads. It also says repeated failures should be signaled to the operator because they correspond to a failing broadcast. This advice is specific to DASH segment delivery; do not apply it as an RTMP recipe or as a general FFmpeg input-read fix.

4. Avoid fixes that do not match the symptom
Do not add -re as a generic live-input fix
FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1: it limits input ingestion to real time. It controls pacing, not network-read recovery. FFmpeg warns that low read-rate values on actual capture devices or live streams may cause packet loss.
Do not guess at timeouts or infrastructure
Without logs establishing the fault, a particular timeout, retry count, bitrate, hardware purchase, or hosting provider cannot be presented as the solution. Diagnose whether the failure is in the input read path, the output/ingest path, or a persistent source problem before changing those variables.

5. Run a representative recovery test
- Save the original command and logs so changes can be compared.
- Test with representative audio and movement, and monitor both FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages.
- Change one protocol-appropriate setting at a time, then record whether the source resumes, the process exits, or output to YouTube fails.
- Observe long enough to learn whether recovery is stable rather than merely restarting once. A process restart may restore service after a transient exit, but it does not establish that the underlying source or network fault is resolved.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube 24/7 radio station on repeat, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own FFmpeg process: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an input read error prove YouTube caused the stall?
No. It identifies a read-side symptom, but the log context and input source are needed to diagnose it.
