Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by checking OBS Stats: encoder lag points to encoding capacity, rendering lag points to scene/GPU capacity, and dropped frames point to network delivery. For a fireplace stream, first free resources, then reduce output load and simplify the scene; changing encoders will not fix every kind of overload.
Identify what is falling behind
OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes even when the video encoder uses the CPU or a dedicated hardware encoder. An “encoding overloaded” warning is therefore a resource-capacity symptom, not proof that the encoder alone is at fault. Check OBS Stats and the log before changing settings.
- Encoder lag: the selected encoding path cannot process frames on time. Lowering output workload or choosing a suitable hardware encoder may help.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite scenes on time, often because GPU capacity is occupied. Free GPU resources and simplify the scene.
- Dropped frames or buffering: delivery may be limited by the network or viewer-side conditions. Treat this separately from encoding and rendering; an encoder upgrade is not a network fix.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide addresses performance causes, but does not provide a universal 24/7 fireplace configuration. A specific diagnosis depends on your computer, OBS version, output settings, encoder, scene sources and Stats or log data.
Reduce OBS load in a practical order
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. Right-click OBS Studio and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this resolves GPU overload in many cases, but it is a GPU-resource step, not a guaranteed fix for every encoding problem. If it changes nothing, continue.
- Close competing GPU workloads. Quit other GPU-heavy applications that are safe to close. Games and GPU-computation workloads can compete with OBS.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution or Common FPS Values. Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is not sustainable, try 30 fps and check Stats again. Choose a resolution that still looks acceptable for the fireplace footage.
- Simplify the scene. Use media close to its displayed size, remove unnecessary filters, and limit browser sources and their dimensions. Replace static browser overlays with image sources where practical. Some sources can consume resources even when they are not visible; a large or complicated scene collection can also add overhead, so split it if it has grown unwieldy.
- Use the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. It can help select settings for your hardware, but system requirements alone do not establish that a particular setup can stream at a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity.
- Recheck Stats and the log after each change. Change one category at a time so you can tell whether encoder lag, rendering lag or dropped frames improved. Test the actual scene and intended stream settings rather than assuming a short idle preview proves 24/7 stability.
Check the encoder before changing hardware
OBS supports hardware encoding through NVIDIA NVENC on compatible NVIDIA GPUs on Windows and Linux, AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, Intel QSV on supported Intel systems on Windows and Linux, and Apple VideoToolbox. Which choices appear depends on the hardware, operating system, driver, encoder generation and streaming service. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide for compatibility details.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide good quality with minimal performance impact. Hardware encoding can move encoding work to a specialized component and reduce CPU load, but it does not remove the GPU’s separate scene-rendering work. Older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Keep GPU drivers current and confirm compatibility before changing settings or buying hardware.
If Stats indicate the encoding path is the bottleneck after the lower-cost steps, compare supported software and hardware options against your CPU workload, available GPU/encoder capacity, output resolution and frame rate, image quality at the service’s bitrate, and operating-system and platform compatibility. There is no single best encoder setting for every machine.

When a graphics card might help
Consider a graphics card with a compatible hardware video encoder only if you have confirmed that encoding—not scene rendering or network delivery—is the limiting factor, and verified the exact card’s compatibility with your system and streaming service. A new GPU is not a default solution: it may not resolve rendering overload, and the research-backed guidance does not establish a specific card model for this problem.
Troubleshoot common fireplace-stream symptoms
- OBS reports encoding overload, but the scene is static: a static-looking scene still has media, filters and overlays to process. Check the selected encoder and output workload; simplify oversized media, browser sources and filters.
- Rendering lag remains after changing the encoder: encoding and rendering are separate workloads. Free GPU capacity, reduce output resolution or frame rate, and trim scene sources.
- Stats show dropped frames rather than encoding or rendering lag: investigate network delivery rather than buying an encoder or lowering scene complexity as the first response.
- Administrator launch has no effect: that step addresses GPU-resource issues in many cases, not all overload causes. Continue through workload reduction and scene simplification.
- The stream works briefly but fails during long sessions: the cited OBS guidance does not guarantee 24/7 stability for unspecified hardware. Test the intended configuration and inspect Stats and logs over a representative period.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube fireplace stream rather than running OBS on a home computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
