When Netflix will not open, freezes, buffers, shows a black screen, or refuses to play a title, start by testing another title, device, and network. Then restart Netflix and the Apple device, install available updates, sign out and back in, and reinstall Netflix only if the problem persists. Mac users need a browser rather than a native Netflix app, while black-screen problems involving a TV or monitor often come from unsupported mirroring, adapters, or DRM restrictions.
First, identify where the problem is
Before changing settings, run these quick tests:
- Try at least two other Netflix titles. If only one title fails, the problem may be title-specific.
- Try Netflix on another device using the same network.
- Try another Wi-Fi network, or use cellular data on an iPhone or iPad as a comparison. Cellular streaming may consume substantial data.
- Check whether other apps and websites work.
- Try another Netflix profile.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or content blocker as a diagnostic test.
If Netflix fails on every device connected to one Wi-Fi network, focus on the router, ISP, captive portal, network restrictions, or a service-wide problem. If it fails on only one Apple device, prioritize that device’s app, operating system, browser, storage, or display connection. Do not assume Netflix is experiencing an outage without checking a current status source.
Fixes that apply to every Apple device
Restart the device
- iPhone or iPad: Turn it off, wait at least 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Mac: Choose Apple menu > Shut Down, then restart the Mac.
- Apple TV: Unplug it from power, wait about one minute (up to three minutes if it remains frozen), and reconnect it.
A restart clears temporary app and network state without deleting Netflix data. Netflix recommends restarting for several playback and frozen-screen problems. See its playback troubleshooting guidance and black-screen guidance.

Fix Netflix on iPhone or iPad
1. Force-quit Netflix
- On a Face ID device, swipe up from the bottom and pause. On a Home-button device, double-click the Home button.
- Swipe up on Netflix.
- Open Netflix again and test playback.
This is useful when the app is frozen, stuck loading, or displaying a black screen. Netflix recommends quitting and reopening the app for these symptoms.
2. Update Netflix and iOS or iPadOS
Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and install any Netflix update. Then open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version offered for the device.
The current US App Store listing checked for this article states that the Netflix app requires iOS 18 or later, iPadOS 18 or later, and tvOS 17 or later. Store requirements can change and vary by region, so check the listing for your storefront: Netflix on the App Store. This requirement is separate from Netflix’s browser requirements for Mac and iPad.
3. Delete and reinstall Netflix
Use this when Netflix repeatedly crashes, hangs, refuses to play titles, or reports corrupted device data:
- Touch and hold Netflix.
- Choose Remove App > Delete App.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Install Netflix again from the App Store.
Reinstallation removes local app data, can remove downloaded titles, and requires you to sign in again. Netflix’s related guidance is available at error and stored-data troubleshooting.
4. If you see error 30103
Error 30103 usually means information stored on the iPhone or iPad needs to be refreshed. Restart the device first. If the error appears only when connected to a television or monitor, disconnect the adapter and test Netflix on the device screen. Then try a supported video adapter and a direct connection without docks, splitters, or capture devices. See Netflix’s error 30103 instructions.

5. Check cellular access and restrictions
If Netflix works on Wi-Fi but not cellular, open Settings > Cellular and confirm Netflix is allowed to use cellular data. If Netflix is missing from the App Store, check the device’s software compatibility, the correct regional storefront, and Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Restrictions can hide apps above the selected age rating.

Mac uses Netflix.com, not a native Netflix app
Netflix does not provide a native Mac App Store app. Open Netflix.com in a supported browser.
Netflix’s current browser table lists these minimum versions and maximum listed resolutions:
| Browser | Minimum version | Maximum listed resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Safari | 14 or later | Up to Ultra HD |
| Chrome | 117 or later | Up to Full HD |
| Edge | 118 or later | Up to HD |
| Firefox | 111 or later | Up to Full HD |
| Opera | 92 or later | Up to Full HD |
Netflix currently states that a Mac must run macOS 10.15.5 or later for its browser requirements. Safari 14 requires macOS 11 or later, and live events require Safari 15 or later. These are browser requirements, not iPhone or iPad app requirements. Check Netflix’s supported browsers and system requirements.
Update the browser and test another one
Use the browser’s built-in update mechanism, fully quit it, and reopen it. If Netflix says “Update required” or that the browser is unsupported, try another supported browser instead of repeatedly refreshing the same one. Netflix provides guidance for update-required messages and unsupported browsers.

Use a private window as a diagnostic test
Open a private window and try Netflix. If playback works there, a damaged cookie, cached site data, browser extension, content blocker, privacy tool, or browser profile may be responsible. Disable extensions one at a time and clear Netflix site data in the normal browser window. Private browsing is a test, not a guaranteed fix.

Sign out and back in
- Move the pointer over the profile icon on Netflix.com.
- Select Sign out of Netflix.
- Quit and reopen the browser.
- Sign in again.
This signs out only the current browser. If Netflix is open in multiple browsers, repeat the process in each one. See Netflix’s sign-out instructions.
Fix a black screen or external-display failure
If audio plays but the picture is black:
- Test Netflix without the external monitor or television.
- Disconnect docks, adapters, capture devices, splitters, and other video hardware.
- Reconnect through a supported HDMI path.
- Update macOS and the browser.
- Test another supported browser.
Netflix says AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported for Netflix playback. Mac-to-iPad Screen Mirroring and Sidecar must also be turned off while Netflix is playing. A working external display does not prove that the particular adapter or DRM path supports protected video. See Netflix’s black-screen and display guidance.

When the problem is probably not Netflix
- Other apps and websites also fail: investigate Wi-Fi, the router, ISP, or a required captive-portal sign-in.
- Every device fails on one Wi-Fi network: test another network and contact the ISP if the connection remains unreliable.
- Only one Apple device fails: focus on its app, operating system, browser, storage, or display connection.
- Only external-display playback fails: investigate the adapter, HDMI cable or port, HDCP/DRM compatibility, AirPlay, Screen Mirroring, Sidecar, docks, and splitters.
- The device cannot meet current software requirements: updating or replacing the hardware may be necessary.
Do not factory-reset an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV as an early step. Reserve that option for manufacturer-directed troubleshooting after app, network, account, compatibility, and display checks have failed.
Before contacting support
Record the exact error code and wording, device model, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or tvOS version, Netflix app or browser version, and whether the failure affects streaming, downloads, sign-in, or an external display. Then use the Netflix troubleshooting hub.
Contact Netflix when the same account or title fails across different devices and networks. Contact the ISP when every device struggles on the same connection. Contact Apple when system updates, Apple TV hardware, network settings, or a physical display connection appears to be the cause.
