Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by checking the handoff from MediaMTX to YouTube, not just whether a camera, encoder, or FFmpeg process can publish into MediaMTX. Those are separate connections. Confirm the source path is live, copy the current YouTube stream URL and key, match the RTMP or RTMPS settings, and verify the forwarded stream has both audio and video.
First, identify which connection is failing
“Publishing” can mean two different things in this setup. A publisher such as FFmpeg or OBS sends media into a MediaMTX path; MediaMTX can then forward that available path to YouTube. A successful local publish proves only that the first connection works—not that YouTube accepted MediaMTX’s onward stream. MediaMTX documents both publishing into the server and forwarding streams to other servers: MediaMTX.
This guide concerns the second connection: MediaMTX forwarding a path to YouTube Live. Work through the checks in order, starting with the source and current destination details before changing TLS or certificate settings.
Check the source path before changing the YouTube destination
- Confirm the path is available in MediaMTX. Check the path you intend to forward and make sure its source publisher is connected and media is arriving. A destination configuration cannot forward a stream that is not present on that path.
- Check the media tracks. Confirm the forwarded source has both video and audio. MediaMTX documentation warns that “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” A local publisher can connect successfully while YouTube receives no usable stream if the video-only condition applies.
If you want to test the ingest side separately, MediaMTX’s FFmpeg guide gives this example for repeatedly publishing a local file to a local MediaMTX RTMP endpoint:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
This tests publishing to MediaMTX; it is not a command to send directly to YouTube and does not verify the forwarding connection. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing guide for its context.
Copy the current YouTube URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream you are configuring. Use the Stream tab or schedule a stream.
- In Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL when you want the secure endpoint. Copy the URL YouTube currently provides; do not rely on a hostname copied from an old configuration or documentation example.
- Copy the stream key separately. Keep it private: do not paste a live key into logs, screenshots, support requests, or public configuration examples.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. Its URL and key workflow is documented in YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Set MediaMTX forwarding syntax without exposing the key
MediaMTX’s forwarding configuration places a destination under the path and separates the destination URL from the stream key with #. Its documentation’s YouTube pattern is shown below with placeholders rather than a usable endpoint or key:
paths:
mypath:
forward:
- dest: <current-YouTube-URL>#<redacted-stream-key>
Replace the placeholders with the current URL and the key copied from Live Control Room. In this syntax, # separates the URL from the key; do not assume that YouTube’s separate URL and key fields are themselves one concatenated value. The host shown in MediaMTX’s illustrative configuration is time-sensitive, so use the endpoint YouTube provides now. See MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation for the configuration format.

Match the transport to the selected endpoint
| What you selected or see | What to check |
|---|---|
| RTMP URL | Use the RTMP scheme and server shown for the stream in YouTube. RTMP is not encrypted. |
| RTMPS URL | Use the RTMPS scheme and the exact server and port shown by YouTube. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. |
| Old or hard-coded endpoint | Copy the current URL from Live Control Room instead of assuming a previously used address remains valid. |
Changing only the scheme while leaving a mismatched server or port can still leave the destination wrong. Make the configured endpoint match the full current URL YouTube supplied. The transport distinction and current URL flow are covered in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Troubleshoot “invalid SSL certificate” or other RTMPS errors
- Verify the whole URL. Confirm that the scheme is
rtmpsand that the server matches YouTube’s current RTMPS URL—not merely that the address starts with the right letters. - If YouTube reports an SSL error, check port 443. YouTube Help says to try specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder settings if the URL appears correct but the SSL error remains. Use it in a way that matches the current URL and your forwarding configuration.
- Do not treat a certificate fingerprint as a routine fix. MediaMTX documents a
destFingerprintoption for an RTMPS destination with a self-signed or invalid certificate. Its YouTube example also reports a certificate observation that can become outdated. Verify the actual current endpoint and certificate before considering a fingerprint; do not bypass certificate validation indiscriminately.
MediaMTX’s example fingerprint is not included here because it is tied to a potentially changed certificate. The current troubleshooting guidance for SSL errors is in YouTube Help; the forwarding page explains the fingerprint option at MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Troubleshoot “connection timed out”
YouTube’s first checks for a timeout are whether the server URL is correct and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. For a MediaMTX forwarding setup:
- Re-copy the URL from the active YouTube stream and verify the scheme, host, and port against the configured destination.
- Confirm the MediaMTX version and forwarding configuration being used actually support the selected transport.
- If those checks do not resolve the timeout, inspect the relevant MediaMTX logs and your deployment/network context rather than assuming a particular cause.
YouTube’s timeout guidance is part of its RTMPS troubleshooting instructions. It does not establish that every timeout has the same cause.

If YouTube shows no incoming stream
Separate three questions: is the source present on the MediaMTX path, is MediaMTX attempting to forward it to the intended current destination, and does that source contain both audio and video? A connection into MediaMTX is not confirmation that YouTube accepted the forwarded stream. Check track presence on the source that MediaMTX forwards, not only on the original encoder.
What to collect if the error remains
The official setup guides explain the forwarding pattern and several common checks, but do not map every MediaMTX log message to a specific YouTube failure. For a useful diagnosis, collect:
- The exact MediaMTX release/version.
- The full relevant log lines around forwarding startup and failure.
- The path and destination configuration with the stream key and any credentials removed.
- Whether the source path has audio, video, or both.
- Whether the current YouTube URL is RTMP or RTMPS, and its port.
- The symptom YouTube reports: SSL error, timeout, or no incoming data.
Redact keys before sharing logs, screenshots, or configuration. MediaMTX’s publishing documentation describes the server’s ingest side; its forwarding documentation covers the onward destination.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than diagnosing an existing MediaMTX server, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
- No computer at home has to stay on.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
