Find out which connection fails: the encoder-to-SRS publish, the SRS-to-YouTube forward, or YouTube’s ingest and stream-health checks. Compare logs and network measurements from a failure with a stable period before changing settings or buying equipment.
First identify where the stream is sent
Write down the stream path before troubleshooting:
- Direct: the encoder publishes straight to YouTube. Skip the SRS relay checks below.
- Relayed: the encoder publishes to SRS, which forwards the stream to YouTube. Treat the encoder-to-SRS and SRS-to-YouTube connections as separate network legs.

Check the deployed SRS version and configuration: the RTMP documentation surfaced for this task is labeled SRS 7.0 Unstable, while the forwarding documentation is for v5. Capture evidence during a drop
Record the failure window
Note the exact UTC start time, duration, and whether the stream reconnects. Save the encoder log, SRS log if applicable, and YouTube’s stream-health message. Compare these records with a stable period—ideally at a similar time of day—and determine which connection closed first.
Separate a connection closure from a stream-health problem
A stream can be interrupted by a dropped network connection, but YouTube can also report problems with the video arriving or its encoding settings. Use the actual health message rather than treating every interruption as a broadband fault. YouTube’s documented messages cover bitrate that is too high or low, frame rate, GOP or keyframe issues, codec problems, and insufficient incoming video. YouTube Live API stream-health status.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and upload capacity
Match bitrate to the video and available upload
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; as YouTube Help puts it, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its current encoder guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates for the listed resolutions and frame rates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of what a particular Indian broadband connection can sustain. Test upload capacity under the conditions when the stream drops. Allow for the rest of the household or office’s upstream traffic rather than assuming a plan’s advertised speed is available to the encoder. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Use a consistent bitrate and suitable keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. Verify the encoder is actually configured to use those values, and compare them with YouTube’s stream-health message rather than changing multiple settings at once. The same guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols. YouTube Live encoder settings.
Verify RTMPS connection details
If using RTMPS, check the protocol, ingestion endpoint, application name or path, TLS, and port 443. Google’s RTMPS guidance also specifies that the server hostname is needed for SNI authentication. An incorrect endpoint or TLS setup can look like a connection interruption even when the underlying problem is connection configuration. Google RTMPS ingestion guide.

If you use SRS, inspect each leg independently
Encoder to SRS is stable; SRS to YouTube drops
If the encoder remains connected to SRS while the outbound forward ends, focus on the SRS host and its YouTube-facing connection. Check the forward target and credentials, SRS process and resource logs, outbound route, and what happens when the forward reconnects. Correlate any logged close or reconnect time with YouTube’s health information.
Both legs drop, or the encoder loses SRS
If the encoder-to-SRS publish also closes, investigate the source network and the SRS host separately: compare encoder, router, broadband, and SRS logs at the same timestamps. A failure on the local leg and a failure on the relay’s outbound leg are different problems, even if both leave YouTube offline.

Test the network at the time of the problem
Run repeated upload-speed, latency, and packet-loss observations during the failure period, then compare them with a stable period. Record times and results alongside the logs; a single speed test taken after recovery may not describe the conditions during a drop.
TRAI broadband reporting includes peak-hour network-link utilization as a quality dimension. That is a network-level reporting metric, not a diagnosis of an individual subscriber’s ISP route and not proof of nighttime throttling. Optional Wi-Fi isolation test
If the encoder uses Wi-Fi, temporarily test it over Ethernet and compare the result at the same time and with the same stream settings. This can help isolate the local wireless link; it cannot establish or cure a fault on the ISP route, SRS host, or YouTube ingest. A cable purchase is only relevant if a wired test is practical and Wi-Fi is actually in use.
Do not switch to SRT as a blind fix
SRS’s SRT documentation discusses packet recovery and how late packets behave under jitter. That background does not make SRT a drop-in replacement for YouTube RTMPS ingest, or demonstrate that changing protocols will fix a particular nighttime failure. SRS SRT documentation.
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Map the path: direct encoder-to-YouTube, or encoder-to-SRS-to-YouTube.
- At the next failure, record the UTC time, duration, reconnect outcome, encoder and SRS logs, and YouTube’s exact health message.
- Identify which connection ended first; for an SRS setup, assess inbound publish and outbound forward separately.
- Check YouTube’s recommended bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and—if applicable—RTMPS endpoint and TLS details.
- Measure upload, latency, and packet loss during both affected and stable periods; use a wired comparison only when isolating Wi-Fi.
- Change one suspected cause at a time, then compare logs and health messages on the next run.
