First find out which connection is reconnecting. FFmpeg may be losing its input, failing to publish to YouTube, or encountering a host/network problem; YouTube may also be rejecting or struggling with the incoming stream. The word “reconnecting” alone does not identify the cause, and the HTTP reconnect options often suggested for FFmpeg do not guarantee recovery of an RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. The kids’ audience designation does not, by itself, explain repeated reconnects.
Why does FFmpeg keep reconnecting to YouTube Live?
A live FFmpeg job can involve two separate connections: the input FFmpeg reads and the output FFmpeg sends to YouTube. If the input drops, FFmpeg may still be running but have no fresh media to send. If publishing drops, the input may remain healthy while YouTube stops receiving the encoder feed. A third possibility is that the FFmpeg process, host, or outbound network is unstable.
There is no command, FFmpeg build, log, input protocol, operating system, or Live Control Room error available here to establish a case-specific cause. Diagnose the failing leg from timestamps and logs before changing options.
| What you observe | What it points toward | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Input-related disconnects or retry messages; output remains open | The source connection or source media | Identify the input protocol and confirm the source is available and producing valid audio/video. |
| Input appears healthy, but publishing disconnects or YouTube reports an ingestion problem | FFmpeg’s output path, stream destination/key, encoder settings, or YouTube ingestion | Compare FFmpeg output logs with Live Control Room messages and timestamps. |
| FFmpeg exits, stalls, or the host is under heavy load | Process or host stability, including CPU and media-path issues | Check the process state, CPU load, and a local recording if one is being made. |
| Encoder output appears healthy, but outbound delivery is unreliable | The host’s outbound connection or network path | Test outbound connection strength; involve the ISP if the test identifies a connection problem. |
Capture evidence before changing FFmpeg
- Save the exact command and version. Record the complete FFmpeg command, version/build banner, and timestamps. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing logs or commands.
- Keep the log context. Capture several lines before and after each disconnect or retry. Note whether FFmpeg stays alive, exits, is restarted by a supervisor, or keeps the input open while publishing fails.
- Separate input from output. In the command, identify each
-iinput and the final publishing destination. Determine whether the source is HTTP, RTSP, another protocol, or local media, and whether the YouTube output uses RTMP/RTMPS. - Record YouTube’s evidence at the same time. While the issue occurs, note the Live Control Room stream-health status, error text, and timestamps. The dashboard and FFmpeg logs show different sides of the same path.
Do not paste a public command containing a live stream key. If a key may have been exposed, reset it through Live Control Room and update the encoder securely.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the matching input protocol
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and related retry controls under its HTTP protocol. They are relevant only when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP input and the installed build supports the options. They are not a general watchdog and do not establish that FFmpeg will reconnect its RTMP/RTMPS publishing output to YouTube.
The FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation says: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” That describes HTTP input behavior, not a universal repair for a dropped YouTube output.

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 10 -i "https://example.invalid/live-source" [your existing encoding options] [your existing output destination]
This is a syntax illustration, not a verified fix or a complete YouTube publishing command. Put HTTP input options before the matching -i; do not put them in the hope of repairing the output connection. Replace the example URL and bracketed portions with your own values. Check the installed build’s accepted options and behavior before deploying changes. Retry counts and delays should suit the source and operational needs; retries can keep a process running without restoring valid media or a healthy YouTube stream.
Do not blindly add more reconnect flags when logs point to an output disconnect, invalid destination, or host/network issue. The evidence here does not establish a universal FFmpeg output-side reconnect command for YouTube publishing.
Check YouTube ingestion, encoder output, and media quality
Confirm the destination and stream key
Verify that the stream URL and stream key in the encoder belong to the intended YouTube event and match the current Live Control Room settings. The URL and key direct the encoder feed to YouTube; a wrong, stale, or mismatched destination can prevent the intended event from receiving the stream. If needed, verify or reset them through Live Control Room, then update the encoder without exposing the key.

Compare settings with current YouTube guidance
YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS streaming, constant bitrate encoding, and keyframes every 2 seconds, with an interval not exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 6 Mbps at 720p60, and 3 Mbps at 480p30. These are platform recommendations for those codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not measured reconnect thresholds. Choose the applicable combination and confirm that real outbound capacity can sustain it.
Check the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval in the encoder configuration. A settings mismatch may show up as a YouTube health warning or poor stream quality; it does not, on its own, prove the cause of repeated network retries.

Check the source and host
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the current encoder version, encoder output, dashboard errors, CPU load, and local archive when a stream looks or sounds wrong. For a continuous prerecorded stream, confirm that the selected file or playlist keeps producing valid audio and video across the affected time. For a live input, check that its source remains available. A continuing FFmpeg process is not proof that usable audio/video is reaching YouTube.

Test before and during the event
YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor Live Control Room stream health and real-time metrics during the event. Review messages and compare their timestamps with FFmpeg’s logs rather than relying on only one side of the connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check outbound network health if the encoder looks healthy
If the source, FFmpeg output, and host appear healthy but delivery still fails, test the strength of the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the ISP if the test identifies a connection issue.
A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful optional diagnostic comparison if the host is currently using Wi-Fi; that is a practical troubleshooting inference, not an official guarantee or a fix for every failure. A cable will not correct an invalid stream key, wrong protocol option, failing source, overloaded host, or YouTube-side problem.

Change one variable, then verify the result
- Choose one evidence-backed change, such as correcting a confirmed destination/key mismatch, addressing a measured network issue, or applying supported HTTP reconnect options to a failing HTTP input.
- Keep the prior command and configuration so you can revert safely. Never preserve or share a stream key in public logs.
- After the change, compare reconnect timestamps and frequency, FFmpeg input/output messages, YouTube health messages, and the local archive where available.
- Call the issue resolved only when valid media reaches the intended YouTube event and the relevant health indicators remain stable—not merely because the FFmpeg process stays alive.
Plan recovery for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend advance setup, testing, ongoing monitoring, and failover tests when a backup encoder is configured. For a channel that must stay live, treat these as separate operational questions rather than expecting one FFmpeg flag to provide high availability:
- Process recovery: How will you detect an exited or stalled process, and who or what restarts it?
- Input recovery: Is there a known-good backup source if the media input becomes unavailable?
- Encoder recovery: Is a backup encoder configured, and has its handoff been tested?
- Network resilience: What is the plan if the host’s outbound connection fails?
- Monitoring and alerts: Who will notice an unhealthy stream, and how quickly can they respond?
Test recovery paths before relying on them. A process supervisor may restart a process without repairing a bad source, bad key, saturated network, or YouTube ingestion problem.
