Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors on a Continuous YouTube Property Tour Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out which connection failed: FFmpeg reading the tour video, or FFmpeg sending it to YouTube. Those are separate protocol legs, and the HTTP reconnect options documented by FFmpeg do not establish a fix for a dropped RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. Without the full redacted command, FFmpeg build, and error, there is no reliable universal reconnect flag.

Collect the details that determine the fix

Before changing options, save the evidence around the failure. A stream key is a credential; redact it from commands, logs, screenshots, and support requests.

  • The complete FFmpeg command, with the stream key and other secrets replaced by placeholders.
  • The output of ffmpeg -version, including build configuration.
  • The complete error and log lines immediately before and after it.
  • The source type and protocol, such as an HTTP URL, local file, or capture device.
  • Whether input reading stopped, YouTube ingest stopped, or the FFmpeg process exited—and whether the process remained alive.
  • The YouTube Live Control Room stream-health message and the time of the interruption.

These details distinguish a source that ended or became unreachable from a publishing connection that was dropped, and from a process or capture failure.

Identify which leg failed

Failure What to inspect What the documented options establish
FFmpeg cannot read an HTTP input Source availability, HTTP response, input options, and whether the source reached EOF FFmpeg documents HTTP-specific reconnect controls; scope them to the HTTP input.
FFmpeg loses YouTube publishing over RTMP or RTMPS Transport reachability, ingest URL and key, protocol support, YouTube health, and whether FFmpeg is still running The HTTP reconnect options are not documented as a generic RTMP-output reconnect switch.
FFmpeg exits or the source/capture fails Process status, preceding errors, file duration, and source or device status A network reconnect option does not by itself restart an exited process or repair a failed source.

FFmpeg describes RTMP as streaming over TCP/IP and documents RTMP output separately from HTTP options. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

If the failed connection is an HTTP input

FFmpeg documents these HTTP protocol options: reconnect retries a disconnect before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection; and reconnect_streamed permits reconnects for streamed, non-seekable inputs. The HTTP documentation also describes retries for network errors and selected HTTP error codes, plus retry-delay and total-delay limits. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version before using an option.

Place input-specific options before the corresponding -i so they apply to that input. For example, the shape of an HTTP-input command is:

ffmpeg [HTTP input options] -i "SOURCE_URL" [encoding and output options] "OUTPUT"

This is a placement illustration, not a complete reconnect command: the correct options and limits depend on the source and FFmpeg version. In particular, reconnect_at_eof can retry after the server reports EOF, but it cannot make a finite recording endless. Use it only when the source is expected to become available again and repeated attempts are appropriate.

For an HTTP input, check that the URL is reachable from the machine running FFmpeg, that the server is returning the expected content, and that the error is actually an input-side HTTP failure. An input reconnect setting will not repair an unrelated YouTube publishing failure.

If the failed connection is YouTube publishing

Do not apply HTTP input reconnect flags as though they reconnect RTMP output. The cited FFmpeg protocol documentation does not establish that behavior. First verify the destination configuration and network path, then determine whether the process is still alive and whether YouTube is receiving data.

Confirm the current ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the stream URL and key shown in the current stream settings. YouTube explains that these tell the encoder where to send the feed; see Manage live stream settings.
  2. If you intend to use RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than assuming an RTMP URL is encrypted. Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol you chose.
  3. For an SSL error, verify the URL scheme and server first. YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guidance discusses port 443 where it is needed for SSL errors; use the port appropriate to the URL YouTube provides.
  4. Keep the stream key secret. If it appears in a public log, screenshot, or command history you share, treat it as exposed and replace it in YouTube’s stream settings.

Check transport and process state

Compare the failure time with FFmpeg’s output and Live Control Room health. If FFmpeg reports a socket, TCP, TLS, or connection timeout while the process remains alive, investigate the route to the configured ingest server and whether the required outbound connection is permitted. If FFmpeg exits, recovery requires a process-management plan as well as a valid command. The available documentation does not prescribe a particular supervisor or universal restart command, so select and test one appropriate to the operating system and deployment.

Check upload headroom and stream health

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends leaving upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s bitrate. Its guidance recommends 20% upload headroom; when planning primary and backup encoders, it says to account for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will remain stable. See YouTube streaming tips.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Measure usable outbound capacity where FFmpeg runs, while the connection is under realistic load—not just the internet plan’s advertised download speed.
  • Compare available upload capacity with the stream bitrate and the headroom needed for other traffic.
  • Read the Live Control Room stream-health messages at the time of the interruption and correlate them with FFmpeg logs.
  • If using a backup encoder, include its bitrate in the capacity calculation rather than assuming only one encoder will transmit.

Validate encoder settings, then test recovery

Encoder settings help YouTube ingest a compatible feed; they do not reconnect a broken network session. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264 among supported video codecs. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval longer than four seconds. Check the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the stream’s format.

  1. Test with the same source type, resolution, frame rate, audio, and motion expected during the property tour.
  2. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and watch both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s health indicators while it runs.
  3. Test the recovery plan deliberately before relying on it for a scheduled tour: simulate the relevant source or network interruption where safe, then confirm what happens to the input, publishing session, process, and YouTube stream.
  4. Decide how you will detect a dead process and restore service. A restart policy should distinguish a transient publish interruption from an ended input, a bad key, or a configuration error; blindly restarting a broken command can create repeated failures.

YouTube recommends testing, monitoring, and preparing failover in its live streaming tips.

Consider HLS only when its trade-offs fit

YouTube supports HLS ingestion subject to its HLS-specific encoder and playlist requirements. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP, so it is a protocol choice to evaluate—not a drop-in reconnect fix for a property tour. Check YouTube’s HLS stream setup requirements and confirm that the encoder and production workflow meet them before switching.

Common symptoms and next checks

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next check
HTTP read error or source disconnect Input source or HTTP connection Confirm the URL and server response; use only HTTP input options documented for the installed FFmpeg version.
Input reaches EOF Finite or ended source Confirm whether the source is meant to loop or become available again. EOF reconnection does not turn a finished recording into an endless source.
RTMP/RTMPS connection timeout or publish error YouTube output path, destination settings, or network Verify the current URL, protocol, key, outbound reachability, and Live Control Room health; do not assume HTTP reconnect flags apply.
SSL error using RTMPS Scheme, server, port, or FFmpeg protocol support Use YouTube’s current RTMPS URL, check the build, and consult its guidance on port 443 where appropriate.
FFmpeg process is no longer running Process exit, source failure, or host failure Inspect the final log lines and process exit status; a reconnect option cannot revive an exited process without an external restart strategy.
YouTube reports poor or interrupted stream health Upload capacity or connection stability Check real outbound capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and correlate health messages with the interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded property tour that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating FFmpeg on a local machine: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and sends to YouTube only.
