There isn’t one universal fix for an FFmpeg concat error: the right solution depends on the error text and whether the clips have compatible streams, codecs, time bases, and durations. First check the concat list’s syntax and inspect every input. If the clips match, try the concat demuxer with stream copy; if they do not, normalize and join them with the concat filter, which re-encodes. Then verify the finished video before uploading it to YouTube.
Start by finding where the concat operation fails
Keep the complete command and FFmpeg’s full stderr output. The title alone does not identify a root cause, and a list-file parsing problem needs a different fix from an incompatible stream or a timestamp problem.
- List parsing or input opening: check the list header, file entries, paths, and whether each source file can be opened.
- Stream matching or packet muxing: compare the clips’ streams and choose between stream-copy concatenation and filter-based re-encoding.
- Bad transitions, gaps, or artifacts: inspect stream durations and timestamps, along with the duration metadata in each file.
- Failure at finalization: retain the final error lines and inspect the destination path and output container; do not assume the concat list is at fault.
To diagnose the exact case, you need the error output, the full command, the FFmpeg version, and the media properties of the inputs. Until those are available, commands below are starting points rather than guaranteed fixes.
Check whether the clips are compatible
The concat demuxer joins packets in sequence and adjusts timestamps so each input follows the previous one. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Compare every clip rather than checking only the first and last.

For a first look, run this for each file, replacing the example path with the actual path:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format "story-1.mp4"
Compare the stream count and order, codec names, time bases, video dimensions and frame rates, audio codec and channel layout, and reported durations. If the summaries differ, a stream-copy concat may fail or create an inconsistent result. Exact output fields and quoting can vary by shell and installed FFprobe version.
Choose the concat method that fits the inputs
| Method | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer with stream copy | The files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to avoid re-encoding. | Fast and avoids another encode, but it does not normalize incompatible media. Duration or timestamp problems can still affect segment placement. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | The inputs need normalization or do not meet the demuxer’s assumptions. | Takes longer and requires encoding choices; poor settings can reduce quality. It can produce a consistent output from unlike inputs. |

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'story-1.mp4'
file 'story-2.mp4'
If the first line is intended to make FFmpeg auto-recognize the format, it must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no extra space or byte-order mark before it. Paths with spaces or special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping for the list-file syntax; a path that parses incorrectly may prevent FFmpeg from opening the input.

Then try stream copy:
ffmpeg -f concat -i list.txt -c copy output.mp4
This is an illustrative starting command, not a fix for mismatched streams. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1 and rejects paths it considers unsafe. Only if the list is trusted and you need to use paths rejected by that check, add -safe 0 before -i list.txt. Do not use it to bypass a path error in a list you do not trust.
Use the concat filter when you need to re-encode
When clips differ in properties the demuxer expects to match, use a filter-based workflow and encode a consistent output. FFmpeg’s FAQ says of the concat filter, “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” The exact filter graph and output settings depend on the number of inputs and their actual audio and video streams, so there is no safe universal command to prescribe without inspecting them.

Choose a common output resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout that suit the sources and intended upload. Re-encoding takes longer and may reduce quality if the encoder settings are poor, but it lets you normalize the clips rather than relying on packet-level compatibility. Check the resulting file from beginning to end, especially at each join.
Check durations and timestamps before changing them
The demuxer uses a file’s duration to position the next file. If duration metadata is missing or inaccurate, later segments can be placed incorrectly and the output may show artifacts. Also, if audio and video streams within a clip have different lengths, timestamp adjustment can leave gaps.

Repeat a story once, or loop it to a runtime
Decide which task you mean before building the list: repeating a source a fixed number of times is different from repeating it until a target runtime is reached. If you repeat the same file through a concat list, the same compatibility, path, and duration rules still apply. A concat error is not automatically a looping error; diagnose the failure stage before changing the repetition method.
For a children’s story upload, watch the assembled video for missing sections, unintended gaps, audio drift, and abrupt joins. Keep rights to the narration, music, artwork, and any other included material. YouTube’s monetization and copyright decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg successfully creates a file; assembly alone does not establish that a video meets YouTube’s policies.

YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and retaining the source frame rate. Its standard computer aspect ratio is 16:9, while the player adapts to vertical and square uploads. These are recommendations, not universal acceptance requirements.

For SDR 1080p, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those figures are for SDR 1080p, not HDR or every resolution. Match the guidance to the output’s resolution, frame rate, and SDR/HDR status rather than applying one bitrate to every story video.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- FFmpeg does not recognize the list: check that its first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0and that there is no byte-order mark or leading whitespace. - A listed file cannot be opened: verify the path, filename, quoting, and working directory. If the path is rejected as unsafe, use
-safe 0only with a trusted list and only when that path is necessary. - Stream copy fails or the output has inconsistent segments: compare stream counts and order, codecs, and time bases. If they do not match, use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes to consistent settings.
- Later clips start at the wrong point or show artifacts: check the preceding file’s reported duration and the audio/video stream lengths. Add a duration directive only when you have the correct duration.
- There is a gap at a join: compare audio and video lengths and timestamps across the affected clips; differing stream lengths can leave gaps after timestamp adjustment.
- The output looks wrong despite a successful exit: inspect it around every join and confirm the chosen frame rate, dimensions, audio layout, and encode settings. A successful concat does not prove the result is suitable for upload.
If the problem remains, share the full command, complete stderr output, FFmpeg version, and stream summaries for all inputs. Those details are needed to prescribe a specific correction.
Or let it run in the cloud
