Audio Sync

Fix FFmpeg Audio Out of Sync in a YouTube Live Product Demo Stream

Measure whether FFmpeg audio is consistently early or late or drifts over time, then choose the right timestamp and output-sync checks.

First determine whether the audio is consistently ahead of or behind the picture, or whether the gap grows as the demo runs. A measured, stable offset may be corrected with FFmpeg’s input option -itsoffset; growing drift calls for checking input timestamps, clock sources, and output frame-sync behavior instead. Without the actual command, inputs, and a sample, there is no reliable stream-specific offset or single fix to prescribe.

Measure the mismatch before changing the command

Use a repeatable event

Pick something with a clear picture and sound, such as a spoken cue matched to an on-screen action or a clap. Note whether the sound arrives before or after the action. Check it near the start and again later in the demo.

  • If the gap stays roughly the same, the problem is consistent with a fixed timing offset.
  • If the gap grows or shrinks over time, investigate ongoing timing or clock behavior rather than assuming one fixed offset will solve it.

This distinction guides diagnosis; it does not establish the cause of any particular YouTube Live stream.

Inspect the inputs and their clocks

List every FFmpeg input and identify how each timestamps its data. For multi-device capture, note whether audio and video come from separate devices and whether those devices derive timing from a shared clock. FFmpeg’s -isync documentation says it adjusts target input timestamps by the difference in input start times, and that the source timestamps should derive from the same clock for expected results. If either input lacks a start timestamp, FFmpeg makes no sync adjustment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That makes -isync relevant to certain multi-input timing situations, not a universal correction for every capture setup. Its documented shared-clock condition matters: do not assume it can stabilize unrelated clocks.

Correct a measured, stable offset with -itsoffset

FFmpeg describes -itsoffset as an input option: it adds the specified offset to timestamps of the corresponding input, and a positive offset delays that input’s streams. Place it with the input whose timing you intend to adjust. Measure both the direction and approximate size of the error first; do not guess an offset or apply it to the wrong input.

After changing the command, repeat the known-event check near the beginning and later in the demo, and inspect the actual live output. A correction that appears right at one moment is not enough if the relationship changes over time. See FFmpeg’s -itsoffset and -isync option documentation.

Check output frame sync and timestamp handling

FFmpeg’s documented video sync modes include passthrough, cfr, vfr, and auto. They affect how video frames are passed to the output, not simply whether audio is delayed:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • cfr duplicates or drops frames to achieve a requested constant frame rate.
  • vfr passes frames with their timestamps or drops frames to prevent duplicate timestamps.
  • passthrough and auto are also documented modes; their suitability depends on the output and configuration.

FFmpeg also notes that the muxer may further modify timestamps. These modes are not interchangeable fixes for faulty input timestamps. If you change frame-sync behavior, verify that audio and video remain aligned throughout the demo and that the output behaves as intended. Details are in the FFmpeg documentation on video sync modes and timestamps.

Use FFplay to observe drift, then verify the live stream

FFplay’s statistics can help you observe audio/video synchronization drift while reproducing the issue. Its documentation describes audio, video, and external master clocks; master-clock selection is mainly useful for debugging. Treat local playback as a diagnostic aid, not proof that viewers receive the same timing. Compare the result with a known audiovisual event in the actual live output. See the FFplay documentation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to investigate Next check
The sound is consistently early or late, with a similar gap later. A fixed offset between the relevant input streams. Measure direction and size, adjust the appropriate input with -itsoffset, then recheck at multiple points.
The gap grows or changes during the demo. Input timestamp behavior and whether separate capture devices share a clock. Inspect input starts and clock sources; assess whether -isync applies under its documented conditions.
Timing changes after altering output frame handling. The selected frame-sync mode and possible muxer timestamp changes. Review the mode’s documented behavior and verify the resulting output over the full demo.
FFplay looks synchronized, but the live stream does not (or the reverse). Differences between diagnostic playback and the actual live output path. Use the known event to check the live output itself; local playback alone does not establish what viewers receive.

What is needed for a stream-specific command

A precise fix depends on information not established here: the full FFmpeg command, installed FFmpeg version, input devices and how they timestamp data, whether the error is early or late, its measured size, and whether it stays constant or accumulates. Without those details, avoid prescribing a numeric offset or claiming a YouTube-specific setting is required. The available evidence does not identify a YouTube ingest configuration or explain how platform-side handling affects this particular stream.

A related public troubleshooting post describes a user having synchronization problems with live screen and audio capture, but it is an individual report, not evidence of a general cause: r/ffmpeg: “Screen capture audio always way out of sync”.
