First identify which playback URL is failing: a MediaPackage endpoint (or a CDN in front of it), or the YouTube watch page. Those are different delivery paths. MediaPackage playback trouble does not, by itself, mean YouTube ingest is broken—and a healthy YouTube stream-health status does not prove that a MediaPackage endpoint is serving fresh video.

Why is my YouTube live stream not playing?

Start with the viewer’s destination, not an encoder restart. Record the exact URL the viewer opens and the time of the failure. A MediaPackage playback endpoint serves output packaged from an upstream live input; YouTube Live uses its own encoder Stream URL and stream key. Do not enter a MediaPackage playback URL as YouTube’s encoder ingest URL, or treat the YouTube stream key as a MediaPackage playback credential.

Keep the YouTube stream key private. If it appears in a screenshot, log, or message shared outside the operations team, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder.

What the viewer opens What to investigate first
A MediaPackage playback URL MediaPackage input, endpoint configuration, manifest and segment responses, and any CDN between the endpoint and viewer.
A CDN URL in front of MediaPackage Both origin and CDN behavior: compare the same manifest and segment requests through the CDN and directly against the configured origin, if your access and setup allow it.
A YouTube watch page YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages, plus encoder output to YouTube’s Stream URL.

For each failure, preserve the exact request URL with secrets removed, HTTP status, timestamp and time zone, response body or player message, and whether the manifest’s segment references advance. For India-based viewers, also record the AWS Region, CDN distribution or edge details available to you, and viewer ISP. “In India” alone does not establish a regional, ISP, or routing cause.

Why does my MediaPackage playback URL return an error?

Check whether input is arriving and the manifest is fresh

In AWS, inspect the MediaPackage channel and the endpoint used by the failing playback URL. Verify that new input segments are arriving and that the output manifest is advancing. A stale manifest can result when MediaPackage stops receiving ingest; an incomplete manifest can result from gaps in the input segment timeline. A running encoder process is not proof that MediaPackage is receiving a supported, continuous input.

Check the endpoint’s stale- and incomplete-manifest handling. If force-error handling is configured, a 404 may be the endpoint’s intentional response to one of those conditions. Confirm that against the endpoint configuration and ingest evidence rather than treating every 404 as an unexplained outage.

Confirm the input format is supported

Compare the actual input type and codecs with the current AWS Elemental MediaPackage input-support documentation for your MediaPackage version. For HLS inputs, AWS specifies conditions including HTTPS/WebDAV with digest authentication, unencrypted media segments, and a required video track. If the encoder sends something outside the supported configuration, fix the input or endpoint configuration rather than assuming playback is the only faulty stage.

How do I inspect a stale HLS manifest or failing segment?

  1. Capture a failing session. Obtain the manifest request and representative segment requests from the affected player or client. Note their timestamps, response codes, and whether the failure is consistent or intermittent.
  2. Compare manifest versions over time. Check whether the playlist changes and whether its referenced segments are current and retrievable. Look for missing timeline intervals, unexpected audio or variant entries, and references to segments that return errors.
  3. Compare origin and CDN responses. If a CDN fronts MediaPackage, request the same content through each available path. An origin response that works while the CDN response fails points investigation toward forwarding, caching, or cache-key behavior; it does not alone identify the exact CDN setting at fault.
  4. Inspect query strings. AWS documents HTTP 400 responses for malformed, repeated, or invalid manifest-filter parameters, and for query parameters on HLS/CMAF bitrate manifests or segment requests. Remove unsupported parameters and retest. Check whether the CDN forwards required manifest query strings and includes them in its cache key where the delivery configuration requires it.

For delivery paths using the relevant HLS or LL-HLS behavior, AWS’s CDN guidance recommends a response timeout at least three times the LL-HLS part duration for blocking requests. Apply that guidance only when the endpoint and CDN are actually using that behavior; it is not a general timeout prescription for every MediaPackage stream.

Is YouTube ingest working while MediaPackage playback is broken?

It can be. A MediaPackage endpoint and YouTube ingest are separate service legs. Check each with its own evidence: AWS-side input, endpoint, manifest, and delivery observations for MediaPackage; YouTube’s stream-health messages and encoder status for YouTube ingest. A healthy signal in one system does not establish that the other system or the viewer’s delivery path is healthy.

If the encoder sends RTMP or RTMPS to YouTube

In YouTube Live Control Room, review stream health, specific error messages, and real-time metrics, then compare the timestamps with the encoder’s output status. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the applicable value from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every format.

If the encoder sends HLS to YouTube

Use YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements, not the RTMP/RTMPS settings as a substitute. The published requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. YouTube states that the Ultra low-latency option is off when HLS is selected.

  • Confirm the encoder is using YouTube’s HLS ingest destination and the correct stream key, rather than a MediaPackage playback endpoint.
  • Check that segment duration, playlist behavior, request method, and encryption match YouTube’s HLS requirements.
  • Use the Live Control Room messages to distinguish rejected or unhealthy ingest from a later playback or viewer-delivery problem.

What evidence should a 24/7 operator collect?

For a continuous channel, make the same evidence available across the encoder, AWS, CDN, and YouTube so that teams can correlate a failure instead of resetting services blindly.

  • Viewer context: player error, approximate location, ISP if available, and whether other viewers or networks see the same issue. For an India-based incident, gather this evidence rather than attributing the problem to India as a whole.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during a stream. For 24/7 operations, make those checks routine and alert on changes alongside AWS ingest, endpoint, and CDN evidence.

When should you reset a MediaPackage channel?

For a MediaPackage v2 channel with stale or problematic ingested content, AWS documents a reset sequence that removes previously ingested content. Preserve relevant requests, timestamps, ingest observations, and configuration first; a reset can clear evidence without fixing a recurring encoder or network fault.

  1. Stop the encoder sending input to the MediaPackage channel.
  2. Reset the MediaPackage v2 channel.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds after the reset.
  4. Restart the encoder and verify that new input segments arrive and the playback manifest advances.

If the same failure returns, continue diagnosing the input, endpoint, or delivery path instead of repeating the reset as the only remedy.

How does the fault location change the next step?

Copyright and content checks for a continuous YouTube channel

Technical playback success does not grant rights to use a documentary, soundtrack, archive clip, or other third-party material. Before looping recorded content, confirm that you have permission for the footage and audio and that the channel’s content meets YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A technically healthy stream does not guarantee monetization or prevent a rights claim. Use the copyright safety checklist to review the material before scheduling it.
