For an SSH disconnect alone, run the encoder inside a tmux session on the VPS and detach. Use a systemd service if the encoder must restart after a crash or reboot. Neither tool can keep a VPS running if its provider suspends the instance.
Identify what went offline before changing settings
“Idle session suspension” can describe different events, and the fix depends on which occurred. A dropped SSH connection does not necessarily mean the VPS or stream stopped. An encoder process can exit while the VM remains up, and YouTube can report an unhealthy feed even while the process is still running.
- Note the time the stream went offline. In YouTube Studio, open the matching stream in Live Control Room and review its health status and any error message. A running encoder process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Check the VPS state. Use the provider’s console or status page to see whether the VM is still running. If it is unavailable, look for a suspension notice or other provider event.
- If the VPS is running, check the encoder. See whether its process is alive and whether its terminal session remains available. Review any exit output or logs.
- If the encoder is alive but YouTube is offline or unhealthy, investigate the encoder output and outbound network connection, using YouTube’s reported error to guide the checks.
The provider, plan, Linux distribution, encoder command, and exact suspension message matter. Without them, it is not possible to say that a particular Indian VPS provider suspended the instance because it was idle. Check that provider’s resource, idle-use, and acceptable-use terms before applying a workaround.
If SSH disconnects but the VPS stays up: use tmux
A process launched in a regular interactive shell may stop when the SSH session ends. A remote tmux session gives the terminal a persistent session that can be detached and reattached. The tmux(1) manual says a session survives accidental disconnection, such as an SSH timeout, or intentional detaching.

- Connect to the VPS over SSH. Run
tmux new -s youtubeon the VPS to start a named session. - Start your encoder inside that session. Use your existing command and verify it is sending the intended stream.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. Press Ctrl-b, then d. You can then close SSH.
- Reattach when you return. Connect to the VPS and run
tmux attach -t youtube. If you are unsure whether the session still exists, runtmux ls.
tmux keeps the terminal session available while its server and the VPS remain alive. It does not restart an encoder that exits, survive a VPS reboot by itself, fix a network outage, or override a provider suspension.
If the encoder exits or must restart after a reboot: use systemd
For unattended operation, a system service is a better process supervisor than an interactive shell. Configure it with the correct absolute executable path, working directory, permissions, logs, and a restart policy appropriate to the encoder. The systemd.service(5) manual documents Restart=on-failure for eligible non-zero exits, signals, and timeouts. Enable the service at boot if it needs to start after a reboot.

Test the service and its restart behavior deliberately, and check the manual for the systemd version installed on your VPS. A restart policy responds to qualifying service failures; it cannot undo an administrative stop or restart a VM that the provider has suspended.
Treat your YouTube stream key as a credential. Do not put a real key in a public script or repository. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio.

If YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: check ingest and network
Use the specific error in Live Control Room rather than changing encoder settings at random. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance covers format and ingest issues such as H.264 video, AAC audio, bitrate, the number of audio and video streams, and keyframe frequency. Confirm the encoder’s output against the error YouTube actually reports.
YouTube recommends checking encoder health and CPU load, testing the outbound connection, and contacting the internet provider if connectivity is problematic. Its live stream troubleshooting guidance provides further checks. If the provider caps outbound bandwidth or the VPS loses network connectivity, tmux and a process restart policy will not fix the underlying connection.

If the VPS itself is suspended
Check the provider’s notice and plan terms, then ask support why the instance was stopped. Verify whether continuous encoding is allowed and whether any resource, idle-use, or acceptable-use policy applies. A keepalive packet, tmux, or systemd restart rule cannot override a provider action. If the workload is not permitted or the instance is stopped for policy reasons, move it to a host or service that permits continuous streaming.
When comparing alternatives, verify their continuous-workload rules, bandwidth or transfer limits, recovery behavior, logs and monitoring, relevant region, and total cost. The available information does not establish a suitable Indian VPS vendor or plan; check current terms and specifications rather than assuming a particular provider allows a 24/7 encoder.

Keep replays and YouTube stream credentials in mind
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes using a server URL and stream key. After starting an encoder, verify the incoming preview and stream health in Studio. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a replay matters, keep a separate recording or plan shorter streams that suit your channel; do not assume an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be archived.
