Set up systemd to restart FFmpeg after a process failure
For a church computer or server running Linux with systemd, let systemd supervise FFmpeg directly. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process; avoid a shell wrapper that exits while leaving an unmanaged FFmpeg child behind.
Create a service unit
Adapt this illustrative unit to the actual host, input, encoding options and YouTube ingest details. It is a template, not a tested universal command.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetRestart=on-failure is systemd’s documented recommended setting for long-running services. It covers qualifying failures such as a non-zero exit, certain signals, timeouts and watchdog failures, subject to systemd’s rate limits. An intentional systemctl stop does not trigger a restart. systemd.service(5)

RestartSec= sets the wait before a restart. The systemd manual lists a 100 ms default, so specify a deliberate delay rather than allowing an immediate crash-and-restart cycle. The example’s five seconds is a starting value, not a universally correct interval. Check the systemd version installed on the host.
Load, enable and inspect the service
- Save the unit under an appropriate system service location, such as
/etc/systemd/system/church-sermon.service. Confirm the FFmpeg binary path, service account permissions, input accessibility and output options. - After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start the service with
sudo systemctl start church-sermon.service. If it should start on boot, enable it withsudo systemctl enable church-sermon.service. - Check its state using
systemctl status church-sermon.serviceand follow its journal withjournalctl -u church-sermon.service -f. Look for the first FFmpeg error as well as evidence of a subsequent restart.
Protect the YouTube stream key as a credential. Do not post it publicly or expose it in broadly accessible files or logs. YouTube’s encoder setup requires the Live server URL and stream key; use the values for the intended event from YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Identify which part of the stream failed
A service restart policy responds to a process failure. It does not necessarily notice every broken stream: FFmpeg can remain running while an input connection or its output has a problem. Choose recovery based on what failed.

FFmpeg documents reconnect options for particular protocols and circumstances, including reconnecting before EOF, reconnecting on EOF for live or endless inputs, retrying network errors and limiting retries. They must match the protocol and direction in use; they are not universal output-recovery switches. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

The FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation describes a separate way to attempt recovery from some output failures. Whether it fits depends on the command and failure. Neither FIFO recovery nor a systemd restart fixes a persistent invalid key, unavailable source, rejected ingest or network fault.
Confirm the YouTube broadcast after recovery
A restarted FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream or that viewers can see the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for entering the Live server URL and stream key, waiting for a preview in Live Control Room, and using its Go Live control for scheduled streams. Check the actual event’s state after FFmpeg returns, then verify public playback from a viewer endpoint.

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance provides codec, keyframe, audio and bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Match those settings to the actual FFmpeg command and the current YouTube guidance; they are not fixes for a restart failure. The page recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Find the original error. Read the first relevant FFmpeg error in the service journal; repeated retry messages can obscure the initial cause.
- Determine whether FFmpeg exited. If it exited, inspect the service status, restart policy, delay, rate limits and journal. Confirm systemd is supervising the intended FFmpeg process.
- If FFmpeg remains active, locate the failing side. Establish whether the input or output connection is failing. Check whether the specific protocol’s documented reconnect behavior applies; consider FIFO recovery only for an appropriate output failure.
- Check the configuration and path to YouTube. Validate the current ingest URL and key, source availability, encoder options and network path. Keep the key private.
- Verify both preview and playback. Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing stream. If the cause persists, use the event’s status and logs to diagnose it rather than repeatedly restarting the same failing command.
