First identify where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording, or only on YouTube. If it is black in OBS, start with the lesson’s source type, selected file, playback loop, and visibility settings. If OBS shows the lesson correctly but YouTube does not, investigate stream output and connection separately; a local media-source problem and dropped network frames are different issues.
Locate where the black screen occurs
Check the same scene and moment in three places: the OBS preview, a local OBS recording, and the YouTube stream. Note whether the picture disappears at the loop point, after the source is hidden, after changing scenes, or only at the destination. The answer determines which settings to investigate first.
- Black in the OBS preview: begin with the media source, its selected file, and its playback and visibility settings.
- Black in the recording: check whether the recording captures the same problem shown in the preview, and whether the source disappears at a particular playback or scene-change moment.
- Black or interrupted only on YouTube: check streaming output and connection after confirming the OBS preview remains visible. OBS describes dropped frames as a possible sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen bitrate; that is not evidence that a local source preview should turn black. See the OBS Help Portal.
There is no single setting established as a fix for every black-screen case. The operating system, OBS version, source type, file format, and exact point of failure all matter.
Check the built-in Media Source
OBS’s built-in Media Source plays supported local video files. In the scene containing the lesson, select the source and open its properties. Confirm it points to the intended file, then inspect the playback options. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide (page dated January 11, 2022).

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop
Enable Loop if the lesson should start again when playback finishes. If the black screen appears exactly when one play-through ends, first confirm that Loop is enabled and that the selected file is the expected one. The guide describes Loop as restarting the file after playback completes; it does not establish that this setting fixes every loop-related display fault.
Restart playback when source becomes active
Inspect Restart playback when source becomes active if the lesson should start from its first frame whenever the source becomes visible in the current scene. This controls what happens when the source activates; it is distinct from looping at the end of playback.

Close file when inactive
Close file when inactive unloads the media file when the source is hidden or is not on the current scene. OBS notes that reloading it may cause a short delay before it appears again. If the black screen follows hiding the source or changing scenes, compare behavior with this option disabled. Treat that as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed repair: the documentation does not identify this option as a universal cause of black screens.
If you use VLC Video for a playlist
VLC Video is a separate OBS source intended for playlists and extended media support. It relies on VLC, so confirm VLC is installed. The OBS guide specifically says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Inspect the playlist and its loop setting, including Loop Playlist, then decide whether the lesson should continue where it left off or restart when its source becomes visible. Those are separate choices: playlist looping governs what happens when playback reaches the end, while source visibility and restart behavior govern what happens as scenes change. For a single local lesson, the built-in Media Source is another option; use the source that fits the file and playback behavior you need.
If OBS looks right but YouTube is black or interrupted
Do not change local source settings as the first response if the lesson remains visible in the OBS preview. Check the stream output and connection instead. OBS’s help portal explains that dropped frames can point to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. That symptom concerns delivery to the streaming service; it does not establish why a local preview would render black.

Record what you observe: whether the preview remains visible, whether YouTube is black or merely interrupted, and whether OBS reports dropped frames. This distinction helps avoid treating a network or output issue as a media-file playback issue.

- Your operating system and OBS version.
- Whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video.
- The media file’s format and whether the source points to the intended file.
- The relevant source settings, especially Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive.
- Where and when the black screen appears: preview, recording, YouTube, loop point, or scene change.
- An OBS log from a session where the problem occurs.
Include whether reloading or reselecting the file changes the behavior, but do not assume that such a workaround proves a current OBS bug.
A historical report is not a current universal fix
An OBS Studio 25.0.8 user report opened on July 19, 2020 described media sources that had not yet been activated failing to appear after an extended period of inactivity when Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive were enabled. The reporter said browsing to and reloading the same file restored it. This documents one user’s setup and workaround; it does not verify a defect in current OBS releases or establish a reliable fix for other systems. See OBS Studio issue #3192.
