To restart a 24/7 lecture stream after OBS crashes, use an external process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited, wait briefly, and relaunch it with OBS’s streaming or recording startup option. OBS’s own reconnect setting is not enough: it can help a running OBS instance recover a dropped connection, but it cannot relaunch an OBS process that has stopped.
What has to happen for automatic recovery
Recovery involves two separate jobs: something outside OBS must notice that the process stopped, and a new OBS process must start with the right configuration and output enabled. OBS’s launch parameters can request streaming or recording at startup; they do not monitor OBS or fix unavailable media, credentials, hardware, network access, or a streaming endpoint.
OBS scripts and WebSocket can control a running OBS instance, but they are not a dependable crash monitor for the process that hosts them. Keep detection and relaunch outside OBS. OBS describes scripts and WebSocket as extension and control options in its Developer Guide.
Prepare OBS to start the lecture output
Preserve the right collection, profile, and scene
Before automating recovery, save the scene collection and profile used for the lecture. Confirm that the selected scene contains the intended video source, that its media files are still available at the same paths, and that any required streaming credentials and endpoint are configured for the account and session that will run OBS.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s Launch Parameters page lists options to select a collection, profile, and scene, as well as to start streaming or recording. It was dated 2021-05-30, so check the installed OBS release’s help or documentation before relying on a parameter.
Choose streaming, recording, or both
Use --startstreaming to start the stream when OBS opens or --startrecording to begin a local recording. For example, an intended launch could include --collection "Lecture" --profile "24-7" --startstreaming; a local recording launch could substitute --startrecording. Replace the example collection and profile names with the exact names in your installation. These are examples of combining documented options, not a tested command for every OBS version or configuration.

If you need both a live output and a local recording, verify the desired behavior in your installed version and test it before relying on unattended operation. A launch flag only requests the output; it does not prove that the source, credentials, destination, or recording path will work after a restart.
Set up an external OBS crash monitor
Use a supervisor that can detect process exit
Run a process supervisor or service wrapper outside OBS. Configure it to check whether OBS is still running, wait briefly after an exit, confirm that no OBS instance remains, and then launch OBS with the required arguments. A delay and duplicate-process check can reduce rapid relaunch loops and the risk of starting a second instance while the first is still closing.

Choose and configure the supervisor for the host operating system and the user-session requirements. It must run as a user who can access OBS’s configuration, lecture files, capture devices if used, and streaming credentials. The reviewed sources do not certify a particular supervisor or provide a ready-made OBS crash-watch script.
Windows: combine Task Scheduler with a monitor
Windows Task Scheduler can start a program or script at system startup or on an event. Microsoft documents the ONSTART and ONEVENT triggers in its schtasks create reference. Those general triggers are not, by themselves, a documented OBS process-exit watcher; use a supervisor or other process-monitor implementation for detecting an OBS crash.

- Choose the monitor and its launch method. Have the supervisor start with Windows or use Task Scheduler to launch the monitor. Configure the monitor to check OBS, apply a brief delay after a detected exit, and avoid launching a duplicate process.
- Set OBS’s executable and arguments. Point the monitor or its script to the installed OBS executable and pass the collection, profile, scene, and output options you prepared.
- Set the working directory. OBS says that scheduled or automated Windows launches should set “Start in…” to the folder containing
obs64.exe. This matters when configuring the task or the launch mechanism. - Run under the right user context. Use the account and session with access to the OBS configuration, media, devices, and credentials needed for the lecture.
- Log each check and restart. Keep enough information to tell whether the monitor saw OBS exit, attempted a relaunch, and whether OBS opened with the expected output.
Linux and macOS: validate the service setup locally
The cited material does not establish a complete Linux or macOS service configuration for OBS crash recovery. Use an operating-system-appropriate external supervisor, then test under the actual account and desktop session that will run the lecture. Verify that OBS can reach its media and credentials and start the required output without an interactive prompt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test recovery before using it for a lecture
- Confirm a normal start first. Launch OBS with the intended collection, profile, scene, and output options. Check that the lecture source is playing and that streaming or recording starts as intended.
- Test a clean exit. Stop OBS normally and confirm that the monitor behaves as configured, without leaving duplicate instances.
- Test an unexpected exit in a safe window. Simulate a process termination only when a live lecture is not at risk. Confirm the supervisor detects the exit and launches OBS again.
- Check the recovered session. Verify the correct scene, source playback, streaming state, and local recording file if recording is required. Review OBS and supervisor logs.
- Test a network interruption separately. A temporary connection failure and an OBS process crash are different cases. Confirm the behavior of each without assuming that one test proves the other.
After an improper shutdown, OBS may show a crash-handling prompt offering Safe Mode. The available prompt text indicates that Safe Mode disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets. Treat this as a possible obstacle to unattended recovery, not guaranteed behavior across every OBS release or operating system. Check the actual installation, its plugins and scripts, missing sources, credentials, and logs during a controlled test.

What each recovery approach can and cannot do
| Approach | Can do | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| External process supervisor or service wrapper | Monitor whether OBS remains alive and relaunch it after exit; configuration can include delay, retry limits, and logging. | Must be selected and configured for the host OS and user-session needs. Validate source, device, and credential access after restart; no specific supervisor is certified here. |
| Windows Task Scheduler | Start a program or script at system startup or on an event. | The cited Microsoft reference does not specify an OBS process-exit watcher or an OBS-specific crash-recovery recipe. |
| OBS launch parameters | Choose a collection, profile, or scene and request streaming or recording at startup. | Do not monitor OBS or resolve missing credentials, files, devices, network access, or endpoint failures. |
| OBS scripts or WebSocket | Extend OBS and control a running instance. | Do not replace an external monitor after the OBS process exits. |
Troubleshoot a failed restart
OBS does not reopen
- Check that the supervisor itself is running and can launch the configured OBS executable.
- On Windows, confirm that “Start in…” points to the directory containing
obs64.exe. - Check the supervisor’s logs for a bad executable path, incorrect arguments, or a user account that lacks access to OBS’s configuration.
OBS opens, but the stream or recording does not start
- Confirm that the intended startup option is present and supported by the installed OBS release.
- Verify the selected collection and profile names, stream credentials, destination, recording path, and required source files.
- Check for a crash prompt or other interactive dialog that is preventing unattended startup.
OBS launches repeatedly or duplicates appear
- Add a brief delay after detecting exit and confirm no OBS process remains before relaunching.
- Set retry limits or logging in the external monitor so a broken dependency does not create an unobserved rapid restart loop.
The computer or connection is unavailable
A process monitor on the same computer cannot restart OBS if the computer is off or the monitor cannot run. It also cannot restore unavailable power, network access, credentials, or a streaming endpoint. Monitoring from outside the machine can help reveal those broader failures, but an OBS process restart alone does not solve them.
Or let it run in the cloud
