What Laurence Fishburne learned
PBS’s Season 11, Episode 10, titled “Finding My Roots,” was published April 8, 2025. It follows Fishburne and host Henry Louis Gates Jr. as they investigate family mysteries. The episode identifies William Siegel Bohannan as Fishburne’s biological father.
Fishburne says he had been led to believe that Laurence John Fishburne Jr. was his biological father. He learned around age 49 that this was not the case and wanted to discover the identity of his biological father. The episode distinguishes that question of biological identity from the family history Fishburne had previously understood.
How the episode says the search unfolded
The program presents the identification as the result of several kinds of evidence interpreted together, rather than a DNA result standing alone.

Y-DNA suggested a surname
Genetic genealogist CeCe Moore first examined Fishburne’s Y-DNA, which the episode describes as passing along the direct paternal line. The program says Bohannan was the surname most frequently matching Fishburne’s Y-DNA signature.
Family-tree research narrowed the candidates
The team then used autosomal DNA matches and family-tree construction to connect Fishburne to Bohannan relatives. The episode identifies Murvin Hilliard Bohannan and Loretta Constance Sandridge as his paternal grandparents. Their two sons, Murvin Bohannan Jr. and William Siegel Bohannan, were the possible fathers the program considered.

A reported match helped resolve the question
According to the transcript, the team contacted William Bohannan’s daughter, Lisa, for a DNA test. The episode reports that Lisa and Fishburne shared 22% DNA and presents them as half-siblings. The program says that result supported William, rather than his brother Murvin Jr., as Fishburne’s biological father.
That figure and interpretation belong to this case as presented on the show; they are not a universal rule for identifying a parent. PBS’s transcript documents what the episode reported, but it is not an independent audit of the underlying family records or laboratory results.

Fishburne’s reaction to the reveal
Before the reveal, Fishburne says, “I’ve waited 60 some odd years for this.” As the family discoveries unfold, he calls the story “better than any movie script or television play I’ve ever read.” After seeing a photograph of William Bohannan, he says, “It’s so nice to see his face and to see him smiling.”
Those remarks convey surprise, happiness, and appreciation. The transcript does not quote Fishburne saying he was “relieved.”

What the episode can—and cannot—establish
The PBS episode and its transcript are primary sources for the story the program presented and Fishburne’s on-camera comments. PBS Wisconsin also lists the episode and carries a transcript. Neither source independently verifies the family records or DNA analysis behind the identification, so the finding is best stated as the program’s conclusion.
The Associated Press preview, published April 7, 2025, also reported that Fishburne would learn his biological father’s identity in the episode. In that report, Gates said, “I believe that knowing about our ancestors is fundamental to knowing about ourselves.” That is Gates’s broader reflection to the AP, not a line from the Fishburne reveal.

Ancestry’s April 16, 2025 description of its PBS episode upload identifies Ancestry as a program sponsor and describes its records and DNA network. The episode’s account illustrates how DNA matching can be combined with genealogical research; it does not show that a consumer DNA test alone can guarantee identification of a biological parent.
