WikiFlix is a free, searchable film catalog and viewing interface—not a conventional streaming service. It uses metadata from Wikidata and sends viewers to video copies hosted on Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, or YouTube. That makes it an excellent way to discover silent cinema, early sound films, documentaries, horror, noir, westerns, animation, and other older titles, but a WikiFlix listing is not a universal guarantee that every copy is legal in every country.

What is WikiFlix?
Open the official site at wikiflix.toolforge.org and you will see an interface designed to feel more like a streaming catalog than an archive search page. You can browse sections, search for films or people, and open title pages with information such as year, cast, genre, and available video sources.

The application itself runs on Wikimedia Toolforge, while the actual movie files are generally elsewhere: Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, or YouTube.

That distinction matters. WikiFlix is primarily a discovery, metadata, recommendation, and playback layer. It does not own a commercial movie catalog, and it is not an official Netflix product. “Wikimedia’s Netflix” can be a useful shorthand for the design, but it should not imply that the Wikimedia Foundation hosts or legally certifies every linked video.
How to watch a film
- Go to WikiFlix.
- Use search or browse categories, years, genres, people, or featured sections.
- Open a film’s detail page and review its title, year, cast, and source information.
- Start the available player. If WikiFlix does not embed playback, follow the link to the external host.
- Use the source site’s player or download options. The external host’s terms and rights notice still apply.
The interface’s official documentation uses examples such as Metropolis (1927), and describes searches that can return films, people, and sections. Labels and layout may change, so follow the current controls shown on the site rather than relying on an old screenshot.

The catalog is dynamic. Wikidata contains many thousands of public-domain movie records, but only a fraction have an associated playable video at any given time. Avoid treating any published exact count as permanent: different sources and dates may count records, playable copies, or titles differently.

Is WikiFlix legal?
Usually, it is a legitimate place to find free films, but “free to watch” and “public domain” are not identical claims. This explanation is general, U.S.-focused information—not legal advice.
Public-domain works
When copyright has expired or never applied, a work is generally in the public domain and can be used and reused without the copyright owner’s permission. The Library of Congress explains, however, that being visible online does not by itself prove that every use is unrestricted. Check the item’s rights statement or license.
Check the particular copy, not only the title
A film can contain several separately protected elements:
- The underlying motion picture
- A later restoration, colorization, or new scan
- A newly recorded soundtrack or musical score
- New subtitles or translated intertitles
- Posters, artwork, and promotional stills
- The particular video transfer hosted online
The Internet Archive’s movie and copyright guidance notes that films completed in 1923 or earlier are generally public domain in the United States, while warning that later restorations and added material are not automatically free. It also says uploader-provided rights information is not guaranteed to be accurate.

Country matters
Copyright is territorial. A film may be public domain in the United States but protected elsewhere. Internet Archive also warns that foreign films can have U.S. copyrights restored under international agreements such as GATT; a missing copyright notice is not enough to establish that a foreign title is free in the U.S. If you plan to download, edit, redistribute, screen, or publish a film, verify the law and rights statement for your country and for that specific version.
Why is a film listed without a video?
A Wikidata record can exist even when no playable copy has been matched to it. The source may never have been digitized, a link may have been removed, or the available file may be only a trailer, excerpt, or incomplete print. Regional restrictions, an unsupported format, or a metadata mismatch can also prevent playback.
WikiFlix’s documentation includes a list of public-domain movies without video and invites contributors to add identifiers from Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, or YouTube. In other words, the catalog can be useful even when the video layer is incomplete.
What to do when playback fails
- Refresh the WikiFlix page and try the external source link directly.
- Look for another file or format on Wikimedia Commons or the Internet Archive.
- Try a different browser if the embedded player does not load.
- If a legitimate source offers a download, open the file locally in a media player.
- For Internet Archive media, its support guidance documents using VLC: choose Media → Open Network Stream and paste the direct media URL.
- If the link is dead, search the title independently on Internet Archive Movies or Wikimedia Commons’ video category.
Internet Archive notes that some files cannot stream in a browser because of unsupported codecs; downloading the file can work when the online player cannot.

Practical rights-checking checklist
Before reusing a movie rather than simply watching it, inspect:
- Which site hosts the copy
- The source page’s copyright or Creative Commons statement
- Whether the file is a restoration or contains newly added music, subtitles, or color
- Whether the rights statement covers your country
- Whether you intend only private viewing or also downloading, editing, public performance, or redistribution
A YouTube link is not proof that an upload is authorized, and an Internet Archive listing is not a guarantee that its uploader’s rights assessment is correct.

Useful alternatives
Internet Archive offers a larger archival repository, although browsing is less curated and uploader rights information still requires checking. Wikimedia Commons is useful for locating freely licensed media directly. The Library of Congress collections provide authoritative cultural materials and item-level rights information, though they are not a general-purpose movie streamer.
