Watch Downfall (Der Untergang) first if you want another film about Nazi Germany’s final wartime collapse. Its bunker-and-capital viewpoint follows Hitler and the Battle of Berlin, providing a stark contrast with Krux’s village community. Choose Phoenix next—or instead—if you want to move into the aftermath: it follows Nelly, a Jewish Auschwitz survivor returning to postwar Berlin after facial reconstruction. Neither film is a sequel to Krux; each continues the historical conversation from a different place, perspective and moment.
What Krux is about
Krux, also presented in English as The Crux, is a 92-minute German-language drama made by Germany and Poland. Tony Vahl, credited as Ulrike Tony Vahl in some records, wrote and directed the film as her debut feature. Jella Haase and Frida-Lovisa Hamann lead a cast that also includes Clemens Schick, Lukas Miko, Martin Wuttke, Steffi Kühnert and Hans-Uwe Bauer.
The story takes place in a small village in northeastern Germany during the final phase of World War II. Most men are away at the front. Women, children and a few remaining men try to maintain familiar routines while the Nazi regime orders the population to leave nothing alive for the approaching enemy. Bodies appear in the river, rumors spread and fear unsettles the community.
Official descriptions call the film inspired by true events. That wording establishes the film’s historical framing, but the available descriptions do not identify a precise documented incident or a named real village. The film’s emphasis is therefore the social pressure of a community receiving a destructive final order, and the way propaganda and ordinary routines fracture when defeat becomes unavoidable.

BR reported a German theatrical start of 4 February 2027. The film had its world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and was selected for the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival’s competition. Filmportal lists a 92-minute runtime and an FSK 16 rating. Release dates and local classifications can change, so check the current listing in your country before planning a screening.

The order is a fit-based recommendation, not a ranking of artistic quality. Downfall follows the war’s closing collapse most directly. Phoenix is the better pivot to the consequences that follow. If postwar survival interests you more than military and political collapse, start with Phoenix and return to Downfall later.
Why Downfall is the closest follow-up
It stays with the war’s closing days
Downfall depicts Hitler and the Battle of Berlin as Nazi Germany approaches defeat. That makes it the clearest chronological companion to Krux: both films look at the period when the regime’s authority is failing and its final decisions shape the lives of people still inside its reach.

The similarity ends at the historical pressure point. Krux begins with a village community trying to continue ordinary life while men are absent and alarming evidence arrives from the river. Downfall moves to the capital and to the bunker, where political and military leadership occupies the center of the narrative. One film observes a local population receiving an order; the other examines the leadership and command environment of a collapsing state.

Its scale changes the question
After Krux, Downfall lets you ask how the decisions imposed on a remote community connect to the regime’s final political and military crisis. The film does not continue the village’s characters or plot. Instead, it changes the scale from neighbors, families and rumors to Hitler, the bunker and Berlin’s battle.
That shift is useful if you want historical contrast rather than a repeated village drama. The 155-minute running time also makes it a substantially longer viewing commitment than Krux’s 92 minutes. Both are German-language films, so the continuity is linguistic as well as chronological, while the settings and narrative priorities remain distinct.

What to notice after Krux
- Location: Compare the northeastern village with the capital. The first is a peripheral community; the second is the center of political power.
- Authority: In Krux, residents confront an order and its consequences. In Downfall, the viewer is placed near the leadership issuing decisions during the final battle.
- Social visibility: The village story makes fear, rumor and civilian behavior prominent. The bunker perspective concentrates attention on command, defeat and the conduct of leaders.
- Historical distance: Watching the films together prevents the final days from becoming a single viewpoint. They describe different positions within the same collapsing system.
Why Phoenix is the right aftermath film
It begins after the fighting
Phoenix is set in postwar Germany and follows Nelly, a Jewish survivor of Auschwitz, as she returns to Berlin after facial reconstruction. Her husband does not recognize her. The central tension is therefore not an order issued during the final battle but the problem of returning to a society in which identity, memory and trust have been damaged.
This makes Phoenix a deliberate change of period. It does not depict the last wartime days from another military angle, and it does not extend Krux’s village plot. It asks what comes after liberation for a survivor trying to re-enter a city and a personal relationship shaped by the Holocaust.

Where Krux examines a community under collective pressure, Phoenix narrows the frame to one woman’s return and the consequences of her changed appearance. The film is described as a melodrama, so its route into history runs through emotional recognition, concealment and intimate relationships rather than through a village’s public decisions or a capital’s military command.

Choose Phoenix immediately after Krux if your main question is what survival means once the regime and the war have ended. Its postwar setting supplies the temporal step that Downfall does not: from the final orders and battles to the difficult work of living with what those years left behind.
A documented home-video option
A Criterion Collection Phoenix Blu-ray is documented as having a 2016 North American release with supplemental features. That record does not establish current stock, price, regional compatibility or whether the disc is the most practical option where you live. Treat it as a known edition history, not a guarantee of present availability.

The comparison matters because “the final days” can mean several different things. A village awaiting the enemy, a bunker facing defeat and a survivor rebuilding a life are not interchangeable perspectives. Watching all three in that order creates a progression from local collapse, through the regime’s center, to the aftermath experienced by an individual.

If you want the nearest historical continuation
- Watch Krux to establish the village-level experience of the regime’s final order.
- Follow with Downfall for the capital, Hitler and the Battle of Berlin.
- Add Phoenix when you are ready to move beyond the war into survivor experience and postwar Berlin.
If you are most interested in survival after persecution
- Watch Krux for the atmosphere of a German community as the regime’s system breaks apart.
- Move to Phoenix for Nelly’s return after Auschwitz and facial reconstruction.
- Use Downfall afterward if you want to examine the leadership and battle context surrounding the regime’s final defeat.
If you prefer a shorter first step
Krux is the shortest documented film in this group at 92 minutes. Downfall is listed at 155 minutes. No running time is established here for Phoenix, so check the edition or screening listing before scheduling a double feature.
Historical and release caveats
Krux’s “inspired by true events” description should not be expanded into a claim about a specific massacre, village or archival incident unless a current authoritative source identifies one. The available film descriptions establish the fictionalized village situation and its historical setting, not the exact event behind it.
The film’s festival and theatrical milestones are also time-sensitive. Its world premiere was at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, and it was selected for the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival’s competition. BR reported the German theatrical opening for 4 February 2027. Those milestones do not tell you whether a local cinema, broadcaster or digital service currently carries the film.

Choose Phoenix when you want the historical aftermath, following a Jewish survivor’s return to postwar Berlin. Together they broaden Krux without pretending to continue its characters or plot.
