Short answer: a film score is the original music composed for a film, while soundtrack has several legitimate meanings. It can mean the film’s complete audio (dialogue, music and sound effects), the songs and other music heard in the film, or a commercial album connected with it. A soundtrack album may contain score cues, songs, both, or other related material, so its title alone is not enough—read the track list.
The direct distinction
“Score” and “soundtrack” are often treated as synonyms because both involve the music audiences associate with a film. They point to different things, however. Score identifies the original composed music created specifically for the production. Soundtrack is the broader term: depending on context, it may describe every audio element in the finished film, only the music heard in it, or an album released for listeners.
That means a film can have an original score and a song-based soundtrack at the same time. A composer may write instrumental cues to fit scenes and transitions, while the director also uses existing licensed songs or newly written songs. All of that music can be discussed as the film’s soundtrack, but only the music composed for the film is normally called its score.
What “film score” means
Music written for a particular film
A film score is music composed for the production rather than selected from an unrelated catalogue. It is planned around the film’s images, pacing and dramatic requirements. A cue can be shaped to begin at a precise moment, change as a scene changes and end when the scene’s emotional or narrative purpose is complete.

The word “score” describes the music’s relationship to the film, not a particular instrumental style. Scores are often instrumental, but they do not have to be orchestral. Electronic textures, sampled sounds, solo instruments, ensembles, vocal writing and combinations of acoustic and electronic sources can all belong to an original score. The deciding feature is that the music was composed for the film.
What a score does
Score music can support atmosphere, tension, momentum, place, character or a transition between scenes. It may be prominent, barely noticeable or absent for long stretches. A score can also be released for listening away from the film, where listeners hear the cues as a standalone musical sequence rather than as part of the picture.
Calling an album “score” therefore tells you about the origin of its tracks: they are presented as original composed music associated with the film. It does not promise a specific length, instrumentation, mood or recording format.
What “soundtrack” means
The broad technical meaning
In film language, soundtrack can mean the complete audio component of a film. Columbia University’s Film Language Glossary defines it as all the audio elements—“dialogue, music, sound effects, etc.”—while noting that everyday usage more commonly connects the word with music or songs. Under this broad meaning, spoken lines, ambient sounds, effects and music are all parts of the soundtrack.
This usage is useful when discussing the finished audiovisual work as a whole. A film editor, sound designer or critic might refer to the soundtrack to mean what the audience hears, not merely the musical selections. In that sentence, soundtrack is not an album category and does not distinguish original music from pre-existing recordings.
The common music meaning
In ordinary conversation, soundtrack usually means the music heard during a film. That may include songs written before the film and licensed for it, newly written songs, and original score cues. A song can be part of the film’s music soundtrack without being part of the original score because it was not composed specifically for the production.

This broad musical meaning explains why people can disagree about whether a particular track is “the soundtrack” while both are using the word correctly. One person may mean every musical selection in the picture; another may mean the songs marketed to listeners; a third may be referring to the complete audio mix.
Soundtrack album and OST
Soundtrack album and OST (original soundtrack) generally refer to a commercial release connected with the film. The label does not impose one universal contents rule. A release can contain:
- only original score cues;
- songs heard in the film;
- a mixture of score music and songs;
- new or related material selected for the release; or
- another combination described by the issuing label.
“Original soundtrack” is therefore not a guarantee that every track is an original score cue, nor that every piece of music heard in the film appears on the album. The edition’s description and track list are more reliable than the title.
How score and soundtrack coexist in one film
The categories describe different layers of the same project. Consider a hypothetical documentary with interviews, archival material and a contemporary story:
- The dialogue from interviews and narration belongs to the film’s complete soundtrack in the technical sense.
- Room tone, archival noise and designed effects are also part of that complete soundtrack.
- A composer’s music written to shape a montage is the original score.
- An existing song licensed for a historical sequence is part of the film’s music soundtrack, but it is not an original score cue.
- A commercial album might include the composer’s cues, the licensed songs, both, or only a selection of them.
Nothing in that example requires choosing one label for the entire film. “Score” answers the question “Was this music composed for this film?” “Soundtrack” answers a broader question about the film’s audio, its music or a related release.
Score vs. soundtrack at a glance
| Question | Film score | Soundtrack |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term primarily identify? | Original music composed for the film. | A broad category that may mean all film audio, the music heard in the film, or a commercial release. |
| Must it be written for this production? | Yes, that is the defining idea. | No. The music sense can include pre-existing licensed songs as well as original music. |
| Must it be instrumental? | No. Scores are commonly instrumental, but contemporary scores can use many sounds and instruments. | No. Songs, score cues and other music may be included. |
| Does the word describe dialogue and effects? | No; it refers to music. | In the broad technical sense, yes: dialogue, music and sound effects are included. |
| Does it identify an album? | Sometimes, when a release is marketed as the film’s score. | Often, when “soundtrack album” or “OST” is used, but the contents vary by edition. |
| Can it coexist with the other term? | Yes. A film can use an original score and songs. | Yes. The soundtrack may encompass the score and the songs together. |
| What should you check when buying a release? | Whether the listing says score or original music and which cues are included. | The specific edition’s track list and format; the title alone is not conclusive. |
Why the terminology causes confusion
Everyday speech is less precise than production language
Marketing and conversation favor a single memorable word. “Soundtrack” is familiar to audiences, so it is often used for a song compilation even when the release also contains instrumental cues. In a technical discussion, the same word can refer to the whole audio track. Neither use automatically cancels the other; context determines the intended scope.

“Original” can describe the release, not every track
The initials OST are widely understood as “original soundtrack,” but that phrase can describe the album’s connection to the film rather than certify that every recording was newly composed for it. A release with an OST title may mix original score music and songs. Treat the track list and edition notes as the evidence for what is actually included.
One film can generate several releases
A film may have separate releases for its score and its songs, or different editions that combine them differently. Digital, physical and expanded editions can have distinct selections. Without the edition name and track list, “the soundtrack” is too vague to identify a particular collection.
How to identify what a track is
Use the following process when a listing, review or conversation leaves the category unclear:
- Ask whether the music was composed for this film. If it was created specifically to serve the production, it fits the usual meaning of score.
- Check whether the recording is an existing song. A pre-existing licensed song can be part of the film’s music soundtrack without being part of its original score.
- Separate the film from the album. If someone is discussing the complete audio mix, soundtrack may include dialogue and effects. If they are discussing a release for listeners, soundtrack album or OST is intended.
- Read the exact edition description. Look for wording such as score, songs, music from the film, expanded edition or original motion picture soundtrack.
- Inspect every track title and credit. Do not infer the contents from the cover, the word “original” or a retailer’s short description.
- Record the format and edition. A physical pressing, digital release and later expanded version may not contain the same selection.
This method avoids the most common mistake: assuming that a release called a soundtrack must contain all of the film’s music or only licensed songs.

What to look for when choosing an album
If you want the composer’s music
Look for an album explicitly identified as the original score or as music composed for the film. Confirm that the track list consists of the cues you want. A soundtrack-branded album can still be suitable if it mixes score and songs, but you should know that you are buying a mixed collection.
If you want the songs heard in the film
Search for the songs or music compilation associated with the film, then verify each track against the edition’s list. A score release may omit those songs entirely. Conversely, a song-focused soundtrack may not include the composer’s instrumental cues.

If you want a complete listening picture
Compare releases rather than relying on a single “soundtrack” label. One edition may emphasize score, another may collect songs, and a combined edition may contain both. The available material supports the existence of variable contents, but not a universal rule about which release will be most complete for a particular film.
Questions to answer before purchase
- Is this release labeled as an original score, a song compilation or a soundtrack with mixed contents?
- Does the track list include the specific cue or song you are looking for?
- Is this the edition and physical format you intend to collect?
- Are the listed tracks recordings from the film, or related material selected for the album?
Common misconceptions, corrected
“A soundtrack always means licensed songs.”
Not necessarily. In the music sense, soundtrack can include licensed songs, original songs and score cues. In the technical sense, it includes dialogue and sound effects as well. The word is broader than a song compilation.

No. Orchestral writing is one possible approach, but a score can use electronic sounds, unusual instruments, small ensembles or other combinations. Its defining feature is that it was composed for the film, not the size of the ensemble.
“Every song in a film is part of the score.”
No. A song selected from an existing catalogue can be part of the film’s music soundtrack while remaining separate from the original score. A newly written song may also be associated with the film without being treated as a score cue.
“An OST contains everything heard in the film.”
There is no universal contents rule for a commercial soundtrack album. The release may include only selected music, a mixture of categories or material arranged for listening. Check the edition’s track list.
“The terms are mutually exclusive.”
They are not. A film can have an original score and songs, and the word soundtrack can encompass both when referring to the film’s music.

How the terms are used in different conversations
When discussing the finished film
“Soundtrack” may refer to the complete heard experience: speech, music and effects. This is the broad technical sense reflected in Columbia University’s glossary. “Score” narrows the discussion to the original composed music within that experience.
When discussing a composer
People generally mean the score when they ask who composed the film’s music. The question concerns original music written for the production, even if the film also uses songs by other artists.
When discussing a playlist or album
“Soundtrack” usually means a commercial music release or a selection of songs connected with the film. Because an album can mix categories, the track list is essential context.
When discussing a documentary
The same distinction applies. A documentary can combine narration and interviews with effects, an original score and songs chosen for particular sequences. Calling the complete audio a soundtrack does not change which pieces qualify as the score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical vocabulary for reviews and liner notes
- Original score: music composed specifically for the film.
- Score cue: an individual piece or passage of that composed music, usually connected to a scene or timing requirement.
- Song soundtrack: an informal description of songs heard in the film, whether pre-existing or newly written.
- Film soundtrack: an ambiguous phrase that requires context; it may mean the full audio, the film’s music or an album.
- Soundtrack album: a commercial release associated with the film; contents vary.
- OST: a common abbreviation for a film-related soundtrack release, not a guarantee that every track is an original score cue.
Using these terms carefully makes a review easier to understand. Say “original score” when you mean the composer’s film-specific music, “songs used in the film” when you mean selected recordings, and “soundtrack album” when you mean a commercial edition.
What the established definitions do—and do not—settle
Columbia University’s Film Language Glossary establishes the broad technical meaning and the more common music-related usage of soundtrack. Explanations published by Classical Music on March 19, 2024, and Native Instruments on February 27, 2025, describe score music as original work for a film and explain why soundtrack releases can overlap with score and song categories.
Those definitions support a useful distinction, not a universal naming law. Labels, distributors and audiences may use “soundtrack,” “score” and “OST” differently from one release to another. No single title can replace the edition description and track list when you need to know exactly what an album contains.
The simplest rule to remember
Score describes origin: music composed for the film. Soundtrack describes scope: the film’s audio, its music, or a related album. Because one film can contain an original score and songs, and because an OST can combine or separate them, identify the specific context before drawing conclusions. For a release, trust the track list; for the film itself, decide whether “soundtrack” means the complete audio or only the music.
