Choose the platform that the target festival and section accept—not the one that appears to have the lowest headline price. FilmFreeway, Shortfilmdepot and Festhome are submission routes. None decides whether your documentary is eligible, whether its premiere status qualifies, which cut you may enter, or what you must deliver after selection. Those decisions belong to each festival’s current regulations.
For a short-documentary maker, the practical choice is therefore a two-part check: first confirm the festival’s rules and accepted platform for the exact edition and category; then compare the route’s cost, profile tools, screener controls and workflow. The examples below show why a platform that works for one competition may be unavailable—or carry different conditions—for another.
What a submission platform can—and cannot—decide
A platform hosts your project information, screener and payment transaction, then forwards the submission to a festival. It does not override the festival’s definition of a short film or documentary. Before opening an account, read the festival’s own rules for:
- maximum runtime, including credits;
- completion date and premiere status;
- country of origin, financing or production requirements;
- previous theatrical screenings, broadcasts or online availability;
- language, subtitles and accessibility materials;
- category-specific restrictions and required files;
- deadline tier, currency and entry fee; and
- the platform accepted for that particular section.
A festival can accept different services for different competitions. An account on one platform is not evidence that every festival, section or edition will accept it.

Platform comparison at a glance
| Platform | What its official material describes | Useful fit for a short documentary | Verify before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| FilmFreeway | One project profile can be used to select festivals and submit. The service promotes status tracking, online screeners and a DCP-conversion tool powered by CineSend. | General-purpose discovery and a reusable project profile. Its undated vendor page says the service is used by more than 12,000 festivals and contests, including 234 Academy Award/BAFTA-accredited festivals, and reaches more than two million filmmakers. It also reports more than one million official selections submitted through the service. These are vendor-published figures, not independent measurements. | Acceptance by the exact festival/category, current fee and currency, screener permissions, deadline and any festival-specific eligibility rule. |
| Shortfilmdepot | Dedicated to short films, including documentary, with a dashboard for registrations and submissions. Registration and browsing are described as free; submissions use paid stamp packs, with one to four stamps per festival. | Short-film-focused discovery and a stamp-based way to see a route’s cost. The interface is offered in English, French and Spanish. | Whether the festival and category are listed, the required stamp count and checkout price, plus runtime, premiere, language and eligibility requirements. |
| Festhome | Festival listings display short-film categories, deadlines and fee schedules. A cited listing advertises annual-pass discounts, while festival regulations can name Festhome as an accepted route. | Useful when the target festival specifically offers Festhome, especially if the listing’s deadline tiers and any pass terms suit your schedule. | The current festival/category listing, deadline tier, displayed fee, currency and the exact terms of any pass or discount. |
These descriptions do not establish a universal winner. A fair comparison uses the same festival and category, then totals the current checkout cost and checks profile reuse, screener controls, status tracking, language access and rules compliance. The available material does not support an independent quality or success-rate ranking.
FilmFreeway: broad discovery and reusable project profiles
FilmFreeway’s workflow is built around a project profile. You enter the film’s information once, attach or select an online screener, then choose festivals from the service and submit. Status tracking keeps applications in one dashboard. The service also promotes a DCP-conversion option powered by CineSend; that tool does not change a festival’s technical specifications, so use it only after the festival tells selected filmmakers which theatrical format it requires.
When it is the practical route
Use FilmFreeway when the target section names it in the regulations, when you want a broad festival-search workflow, or when repeated applications benefit from a single maintained profile. The vendor’s claims of more than 12,000 festivals and contests, 234 Academy Award/BAFTA-accredited festivals, more than two million filmmakers reached and more than one million official selections are undated marketing figures. They indicate the scale the service advertises, not the probability of selection or an audited catalog count.

Checks that prevent an invalid submission
- Open the festival’s current rules from its official site and confirm that the exact category accepts FilmFreeway.
- Read whether the screener must be hosted through FilmFreeway, whether downloads are disabled, and how long the link must remain available.
- Enter the fee shown for the correct category and deadline; a platform profile does not guarantee that the fee is current.
- Confirm that the cut in your profile matches the runtime, completion-date and premiere conditions for that edition.
Shortfilmdepot: a short-film-specific, stamp-based route
Shortfilmdepot describes itself as dedicated to short films and supports documentary entries. Its dashboard is designed for registrations and submissions, and the interface is available in English, French and Spanish. Registration and browsing are described as free, while each festival submission consumes a paid stamp: one to four stamps depending on the festival.

How the stamp model changes budgeting
Do not treat a stamp as a universal entry fee. The number of stamps is festival-specific, and the amount you pay for a stamp pack is a platform billing decision. At checkout, record both the stamp requirement and the resulting monetary total in your currency. A festival may also impose its own deadline-based fee or category fee; the stamp display does not replace those rules.
When to choose it
Shortfilmdepot is a sensible route when the festival lists it, especially for a short-only program where its category filters and dashboard match your needs. Confirm that the listing covers your documentary category, not merely another section of the same event. Check the required runtime, premiere status, language and eligibility conditions before purchasing stamps.

Festhome: listing-driven submissions with festival-specific fees
Festhome listings show categories, deadlines and fee schedules for individual festivals. The cited example also advertises annual-pass discounts, but no single platform-wide Festhome tariff is established. A pass or discount may have conditions that are visible only in the current listing or checkout.
Use the listing, not a general assumption
Start from the target festival’s current regulations, then open the matching Festhome listing and category. Confirm the closing date, deadline tier, currency, displayed amount and any pass terms. A fee shown for one festival cannot be generalized to another, and an annual pass does not make a festival eligible to receive your film if its rules exclude your origin, runtime or premiere status.

| Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026 | Canadian Shorts may include documentary and must be 40 minutes or less including credits, subject to Canadian eligibility conditions. International Shorts also include documentary at 40 minutes or less and add premiere and completion requirements. | Registration, payment and an online screener are required through FilmFreeway; TIFF states that it does not accept other submission formats. If selected, the film may need an exhibition copy in a festival-specified theatrical format. | Fees are in Canadian dollars and vary by category and deadline. |
| Sundance 2027 | The short-film category is under 50 minutes including credits and includes nonfiction. Origin, financing and public-release rules are category-specific; short-film rules are not interchangeable with feature rules. | Follow the current listing’s category instructions and public-availability restrictions. | Cited standard short-film tiers are $55 early, $75 official and $95 late. Gold-member amounts differ; the available listing does not state those amounts. |
| Busan International Short Film Festival 2026 | Accepted services vary by section. | FilmFreeway and Festhome are listed for International and Korean Competition. Shortfilmdepot is listed for International Competition only. | Use the fee and deadline shown in the current competition rules. |
| Brussels Short Film Festival 2026 | The cited international competition requires an uploaded film and supporting images. | Online submissions are accepted through Shortfilmdepot or Festhome. | Fee tiers rise over the submission window; check the applicable deadline. |
These examples are edition-specific. A later TIFF, Sundance, Busan or Brussels edition can change its runtime, premiere, platform, fee or file requirements.

How to choose a route for one short documentary
- Name the exact target: write down the festival, edition, competition and category. “The festival accepts FilmFreeway” is incomplete if the statement applies only to another section.
- Extract eligibility rules: record runtime including credits, completion date, country or financing, premiere status, prior screenings or online release, language and subtitles, and any documentary or category restriction.
- Confirm the accepted platform: use the festival’s current regulations. For example, Busan’s 2026 sections do not all accept the same services.
- Prepare the profile: keep the title, synopsis, filmmaker biography, stills, poster, credits and contact details consistent. Enter the exact runtime and completion date of the submitted cut.
- Configure the screener: test playback, audio, subtitles, password or access settings and expiry. Make sure the festival can view the film for the period its rules require.
- Calculate the real total: include the festival’s category and deadline fee, the correct currency, platform charges and, on Shortfilmdepot, the required stamp cost. Do not compare a festival entry fee with a platform’s stamp model as though they were the same charge.
- Submit before the tier closes: save the receipt, confirmation number, date, amount and screener version. A late submission can move into a higher fee tier or become ineligible.
- Maintain a log: track festival, section, platform, submission date, currency, fee, screener version, premiere status and response. This prevents contradictory premiere claims and helps you replace an expiring screener quickly.
Application screener versus exhibition copy
An online application screener is for selection. It is not automatically the file the festival will project. TIFF’s 2026 terms illustrate the distinction: the application uses an online screener through FilmFreeway, while selected films may later have to provide an exhibition copy in a theatrical format specified by TIFF.
After selection, ask for the exact codec, resolution, audio layout, subtitle format, file-naming convention, delivery deadline, shipping or upload method, and whether the festival requires a DCP or another theatrical package. A platform’s DCP-conversion feature can help with preparation, but the festival’s technical sheet remains authoritative.

Submitting through an unaccepted service
Symptom: the festival page names Shortfilmdepot or Festhome, but you submit through FilmFreeway because another section used it. Fix: return to the exact competition rules and use one of the listed routes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Using a runtime that excludes credits
Symptom: the picture is 39 minutes but the complete file is 41 minutes. Fix: measure the full submitted file, including credits, against the festival’s definition. TIFF’s 2026 short limit is 40 minutes including credits; Sundance’s 2027 definition is under 50 minutes including credits.
Missing a premiere or public-release condition
Symptom: a public upload, broadcast or previous screening conflicts with the category. Fix: document every prior public showing and online availability before selecting a category. Do not assume that a short-film rule matches the festival’s feature rule or another section’s rule.
Confusing a platform charge with the festival fee
Symptom: a stamp pack, pass discount or platform charge is treated as the festival’s entry price. Fix: save the checkout breakdown and record festival fee, platform billing and currency separately.
Letting the screener expire
Symptom: a programmer reports that the link is inaccessible. Fix: test the link in a private browser before submission, keep permissions unchanged during the review window and update the festival only through the method its rules permit.
A decision framework for filmmakers with limited time or budget
- If the festival accepts only one route: use that route, regardless of a preference for another dashboard.
- If two or more routes are accepted: compare the same category’s total checkout amount, deadline tier, screener controls and profile-reuse effort.
- If you submit to many short-film programs: Shortfilmdepot’s dedicated focus and stamp display may simplify short-film discovery, while FilmFreeway’s reusable profile and broad vendor-claimed catalog may reduce repeated data entry. Verify each listing rather than relying on catalog size.
- If the target festival advertises Festhome: inspect its listing for category fees, deadlines and any annual-pass terms before deciding whether that route is economical.
- If the film is selected: stop comparing application platforms and read the festival’s exhibition-delivery instructions; the required theatrical file is a separate deliverable.
What “best” means for a short documentary
There is no evidence here for a universal cheapest or best platform. The best route is the one that the target section accepts and that lets you submit an eligible cut, accessible screener and complete materials before the correct deadline at a clearly understood total cost. Treat platform scale claims as vendor statements, not as evidence of selection odds, editorial quality or acceptance.
Recheck the festival’s official regulations and the platform checkout immediately before every submission. Deadlines, fees, categories, accepted services and technical requirements can change between editions.
