Choose individual tickets when you have a short, fixed list of documentaries or an uncertain schedule. Choose a festival pass when the screenings you will realistically attend exceed that festival’s break-even point and you can follow its reservation, capacity and arrival rules. A ticket package or multi-entry card is often the best middle ground.
There is no universal number of films that makes a pass worthwhile. Prices, exclusions, online rights and admission procedures differ by festival. The examples below use official 2026 terms from FIFDH, DOK.fest München, DOC NYC, AFI FEST and Sundance to show how to calculate the value before you buy.

Start with the break-even calculation
The basic test is straightforward:
Pass price ÷ ordinary ticket price = break-even number of screenings.
Round the result up to the next whole screening. Then test whether you can actually attend that many eligible screenings. A pass that breaks even at eight films is not a bargain if your realistic plan contains five, or if three of the films you want are excluded.
#1 Best Overall
- Documentary Feature Film providing an in-depth look at the music, politics, activism, and bold life of music icon, Nina Simone.
- Only film to feature over 50 of Nina's friends, family, band members, lovers and fellow musicians, giving viewers a deeper, stronger understanding of Nina and her artistic intentions.
- Features her involvement with key friends and figures: Martin Luther King, Jr., Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Langston Hughes, Miriam Makeba
- Nina Simone's story from birth in the segregated American South to her death in the South of France
- The stories behind Nina Simone's most iconic songs: Mississippi Goddam, Four Women, Young, Gifted and Black, Why? The King of Love is Dead, Strange Fruit, Sinnerman, Porgy, Ne Me Qutite Pas, Wild is the Wind, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.
The calculation is only a starting point. A pass may add priority access, a lounge or online viewing, while an individual ticket may give you more control over exact dates and events. Treat the arithmetic and the rules as one decision, not as separate questions.
2026 published examples
| Festival and product | Published price | Comparable single admission | Arithmetic break-even | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FIFDH Festival Pass | CHF 150 | CHF 16 standard film ticket | 150 ÷ 16 = 9.375; about 10 screenings | One seat per film; maximum four screenings per day; excludes the opening ceremony and Impact Days; nominative and non-transferable. |
| DOK.fest München cinema Festival Pass | €80 | €12 cinema ticket | 80 ÷ 12 = 6.67; about 7 screenings | Must be used with a separately obtained ticket; covers films and events except the opening; some online films have limited contingents. |
| DOC NYC 10-ticket package | $170 | Regular admission implied by the stated $30 saving | $17 per admission across 10 entries | Each admission is redeemed individually; excludes Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Night films. |
| FIFDH five-admission card | CHF 75 | Five entries | CHF 15 per admission | Useful for a moderate schedule; apply the festival’s own eligibility and redemption rules. |
These figures are festival-specific 2026 prices, not an industry standard. The cited official pages do not publish a universal percentage of documentary viewers for whom passes are better, so a personal attendance estimate is more reliable than a general statistic.
When individual tickets are the better choice
Single tickets usually win when your documentary list is short, your travel plans are unsettled or the events you care about fall outside pass coverage. You pay only for confirmed choices and retain control over the exact screening you attend.
You have only a few must-see films
If you expect one to six screenings, compare that number with the festival’s rounded break-even point. At DOK.fest München, seven cinema screenings are the arithmetic threshold for the €80 cinema pass. Someone planning three films would spend €36 in single tickets, leaving a large gap before the pass could pay off. At FIFDH, a two-film plan costs CHF 32 at the standard rate, compared with CHF 150 for the pass.

Pass value depends on attendance, not intention. Work, travel, family obligations and sold-out time slots can turn an ambitious itinerary into unused capacity. Buying singles lets you scale back without having prepaid for a larger number of admissions.
You need a specific screening time
A pass can increase access without guaranteeing the exact seat or time you want. Singles preserve the ability to select a particular screening while inventory remains. Sundance states that single-film tickets can be bought without a package and that screening availability is first-come, first-served; its guidance tells buyers to make selections early.

You want excluded events
Passes commonly omit opening or closing nights, professional programs, premieres or special presentations. If those are the center of your plan, calculate their separate ticket costs rather than assuming a pass covers them. A pass plus several excluded-event tickets can cost more than a small set of singles.
When a festival pass earns its cost
A pass becomes compelling when you can attend at least the rounded break-even number of eligible screenings and can use the pass’s admission mechanism. The additional benefits matter most when the festival is busy or your schedule is flexible.

You will attend well beyond the threshold
At FIFDH, ten standard screenings cost CHF 160 individually, compared with a CHF 150 Festival Pass before considering exclusions. The nominal saving is CHF 10 at ten films and grows with each additional eligible screening, subject to the one-seat-per-film and four-screenings-per-day limits. At DOK.fest München, seven €12 cinema tickets total €84, slightly above the €80 pass; eight screenings would produce a larger margin.
You value breadth across the program
A pass can make spontaneous choices less expensive. DOK.fest München describes its cinema pass as covering all films and events except the opening, while FIFDH describes access to all festival events from March 6 to 15, 2026, except the opening ceremony and professional Impact Days. The exact wording matters: “all” does not override a separate ticket requirement, a capacity limit or an excluded program.
You need priority or hospitality benefits
AFI FEST lists a 2026 Star Pass at $300 and a Patron Pass at $600. Benefits include early or priority screening selection, priority theater access, Festival Lounge access and free rush access. However, AFI FEST also states that every screening requires a ticket reservation: a pass alone does not grant entry. Passes are nontransferable and nonrefundable, and only one ticket may be selected per individual screening. Those terms make the pass valuable for its priority and hospitality features, not as an automatic all-access credential.
Ticket packs and multi-entry cards: the middle option
A package is useful when your expected attendance is above the single-ticket plan but below the full-pass threshold, or when you want a discount without committing to every festival day.
Rank #3
DOC NYC’s 10-ticket package
DOC NYC lists a 2026 package of 10 festival tickets for regular in-person screenings at $170, advertised as saving $30 against regular festival admission. The effective price is $17 per admission. Each of the ten admissions must be redeemed individually, so the package is not a single reservation and does not automatically secure ten seats. It excludes Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Night films.
Choose this package when you can name roughly ten eligible regular screenings and are comfortable managing ten separate redemptions. If you will attend only four or five, buying singles may reduce unused value; if you need excluded gala films, budget those tickets separately.
FIFDH’s five-admission card
FIFDH lists a five-admission card for CHF 75, or CHF 15 per admission. That is CHF 1 less than five CHF 16 standard tickets, before considering any card-specific rules. The card can fit a visitor who expects several films but not the approximately ten needed for the CHF 150 Festival Pass to reach arithmetic break-even. Confirm which screenings accept the card and how reservations work before relying on it.
How to compare a package with a pass
- Calculate the package’s effective admission price, then multiply it by the number you will actually use.
- List excluded events and compare that list with your must-see titles.
- Check whether entries expire, can be shared or must be redeemed by one named person.
- Confirm whether each entry requires a separate reservation and whether redemption is first-come, first-served.
- Price the risk of unused entries; a nominal discount disappears when several admissions go unused.
Do passes guarantee seats?
Usually not by themselves. A pass may guarantee eligibility, provide priority or let you reserve early, but admission still depends on the festival’s ticketing and capacity rules.
Passes that require a separate ticket
DOK.fest München says its festival pass is valid only in combination with a ticket. AFI FEST states that all screenings require tickets and that a pass alone does not grant entry. For either festival, buying the pass without completing the reservation step does not create a seat.
Arrival deadlines and capacity
DOC NYC’s 2026 All Film Pass covers every in-person film from November 11–19 and films on its virtual platform from November 11–29. Its terms say in-person admission is guaranteed when the passholder arrives at least 15 minutes before showtime, subject to the stated conditions. Arriving late can therefore change the practical value of the pass.
Rank #4
Sundance warns that venue capacity is limited and tickets do not guarantee admission. It also advises attendees to arrive at least 15 minutes before the published start time. A ticket or pass is not a reason to ignore the venue’s arrival guidance.
One-seat and daily limits
FIFDH’s Festival Pass permits one seat per film and limits a passholder to four screenings per day. Those constraints can block an itinerary that looks profitable on paper. For example, a ten-film plan must fit across the festival dates, available sessions and one-seat rule; duplicate reservations for the same film do not increase value.
Can you watch documentary festival films online with a pass?
Sometimes, but online access is governed by territory, dates and individual-film availability. A hybrid pass is not automatically a global streaming subscription.
DOC NYC’s virtual coverage
DOC NYC’s 2026 All Film Pass includes in-person films from November 11–19 and films on its virtual platform from November 11–29. Online films are limited to the United States and U.S. territories, and not every film is online for the full festival. If you live elsewhere, or if a title is available online only briefly, the virtual portion may add no usable value.
DOK.fest München’s hybrid options
DOK.fest lists a €60 @home pass, a €100 dual pass and an €80 cinema pass. Its ticket information says the festival pass covers films and events except the opening but must be used with a ticket. Some online films have limited contingents, so the dual pass does not remove the need to check availability.
Questions to ask about any online component
- Is streaming available in your country or territory?
- What are the start and end dates for each film?
- Is the title available for the entire festival or only a shorter window?
- Are online plays counted against a viewing limit or a limited contingent?
- Does the pass include online titles automatically, or do you reserve each one?
A practical decision process
- Build a realistic list. Write down the documentaries and events you can genuinely attend. Use travel time, work commitments and likely sold-out sessions, not an idealized wish list.
- Separate eligible from excluded items. Mark opening and closing events, professional programs, premieres, online-only titles and any film outside your territory.
- Find the ordinary ticket price. Use the festival’s published rate for the same category: cinema, in-person regular admission or another directly comparable ticket.
- Compute and round up. Divide the pass price by that ticket price and round to the next whole screening. The result is the minimum number of eligible admissions needed for arithmetic break-even.
- Check the admission mechanism. Determine whether the pass itself admits you, unlocks a required ticket reservation or merely provides priority. DOK.fest München and AFI FEST explicitly require separate tickets.
- Test capacity and timing. Read limits on seats per film, screenings per day, rush lines and arrival deadlines. A pass cannot create a second seat in a full theater.
- Compare the middle option. Price a ticket package or multi-entry card when your attendance falls between the single-ticket plan and the full-pass break-even point.
- Read the transaction rules. Check whether the product is nominative, transferable, refundable, resalable or final sale. Record any cancellation or postponement exceptions.
- Reserve early. First-come, first-served systems and limited online contingents can erase the theoretical benefit of waiting.
Festival-by-festival scenarios
Scenario: a short FIFDH shortlist
You want four standard films at CHF 16 each. Singles cost CHF 64. The CHF 150 Festival Pass would require about ten eligible screenings to reach break-even, so the pass is not justified by those four films. The CHF 75 five-admission card is closer to the plan; it costs CHF 11 more than four singles but provides one additional admission. Choose it only if you expect to use that fifth entry and its rules fit your schedule.

Scenario: an intensive DOK.fest München visit
You are in Munich long enough for eight cinema screenings. Eight individual €12 tickets total €96, while the cinema Festival Pass costs €80. The pass clears its approximately seven-screening threshold, but you must obtain a ticket for each screening and should verify availability, especially for online films if you are considering a hybrid product.
Scenario: ten regular DOC NYC screenings
You can attend ten regular in-person screenings and do not need Opening, Centerpiece or Closing Night films. The $170 package gives a stated $30 saving and an effective $17 per admission. Because every admission is redeemed separately, create a reservation plan rather than assuming the package guarantees all ten seats.
Scenario: an AFI FEST priority-focused visit
You care about early selection, theater priority, lounge access and rush access more than a simple per-film discount. The 2026 Star Pass is listed at $300 and the Patron Pass at $600, but every screening still requires a separate ticket reservation. Compare the value of those non-price benefits with your schedule, and remember that the passes are nontransferable and nonrefundable.
Rules that can change the value after purchase
Transferability and identity
FIFDH’s Festival Pass is nominative and non-transferable. AFI FEST passes are also nontransferable. If someone else may use the product, verify the policy before paying; a pass that cannot be reassigned has no fallback value when plans change.

Refunds, cancellations and postponements
Sundance states that its public pass, package and ticket sales are generally final, with limited cancellation or postponement exceptions. Other festivals may use different rules. Treat a pass or package as money committed unless the specific terms say otherwise.
Exclusions hidden in broad language
Words such as “all films” can still be followed by an opening-night exception, a professional-program exclusion, a limited online catalog or a requirement to reserve a ticket. Read the detailed product page and not only the headline description.
Arrival and rush access
Priority or rush benefits are operational rules, not a promise that every screening will be available. Confirm the required arrival time, the location of the rush line and whether late arrival cancels a reservation. The fifteen-minute guidance published by DOC NYC and Sundance illustrates why a schedule with tight back-to-back screenings can undermine a pass plan.
A compact checklist before checkout
- How many screenings will I realistically attend?
- What is the rounded pass break-even number?
- Which of my must-see films or events are excluded?
- Does the product admit me directly, or must I obtain a ticket?
- Can I reserve the exact sessions I need?
- What are the venue capacity and arrival rules?
- Are there daily, per-film or online-contingent limits?
- Is the product nominative, transferable, refundable or final sale?
- Would a package or five-entry card better match my attendance?
- If online access is included, can I use it in my territory during the stated window?
Bottom line for documentary viewers
Use festival-specific arithmetic, then verify the rules that arithmetic cannot capture. Individual tickets are the safer choice for a small, fixed shortlist or an uncertain schedule. A pass is financially sensible when your realistic eligible screenings exceed the rounded break-even point and you can reserve and reach them under the festival’s conditions. A ticket pack or multi-entry card fills the gap for moderate attendance. Online territory limits, excluded events, separate ticket requirements, capacity, arrival deadlines and nonrefundable terms can matter more than the headline discount.
