Fight-or-flight is the body’s automatic response to a perceived threat. It can make your heart beat faster, quicken your breathing, tense your muscles and sharpen your alertness so you can react quickly. The response is a normal survival mechanism; it can also occur in response to psychological stress, even when there is no immediate physical danger.

What is the fight-or-flight response?

Fight-or-flight is a short-term stress response involving the nervous system and the release of hormones. It prepares the body to respond to danger by changing functions such as heart rate, breathing and muscle tension. In an immediate hazard, those changes can help you act quickly. Stress itself is the body’s response to a demand or challenge, and it is not always harmful; an ongoing or repeated response is different from a brief one. NCCIH explains the stress response, while MedlinePlus distinguishes short-term from long-term stress.

What happens during fight-or-flight?

The body may increase heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure, while muscles tense and sweating increases. Some people notice trembling or heightened alertness. The signs and their intensity vary. Cleveland Clinic describes fight, flight, freeze and fawn as possible reactions to a perceived threat: fighting or fleeing, becoming immobilized, or appeasing the threat. These are possible patterns, not a sequence everyone experiences. Cleveland Clinic’s explanation of the response includes further examples.

Can stress trigger the response without physical danger?

Yes. A work presentation, for example, or even thinking about a phobia can prompt a similar reaction. The body is responding to a perceived threat; the physical sensations alone do not establish that the situation is objectively dangerous. Noticing a racing heart or tense muscles can help you recognize stress, but those signs do not diagnose anxiety, panic or another condition.

How long does the response last, and when does stress become a concern?

Cleveland Clinic’s July 22, 2024 article gives 20–30 minutes as a general estimate for the body to return to normal after a fight-or-flight response. It also notes that recovery varies with the person and trigger, so this is not a guaranteed timetable. A brief response to a challenge is not the same as chronic stress. Frequent, prolonged or disproportionate stress deserves attention, particularly when it affects health or quality of life.

What can you do when you notice a stress response?

  1. Notice your own signs. If it is useful, write down what you notice and what was happening when the reaction began. Cleveland Clinic quotes registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, RP: “I recommend carving out time to write down your signs and symptoms of stress.” This is advice for spotting personal patterns, not a promise of a particular outcome.
  2. Pause if the situation allows. Try a familiar, comfortable calming routine, such as slow breathing or a relaxation exercise. NCCIH describes approaches including breathing exercises, guided imagery, biofeedback, self-hypnosis and progressive relaxation; some can be self-taught, including with brief instruction from a book or practitioner.
  3. Practice without expecting a cure. Regular practice may help some people elicit a relaxation response. The evidence for relaxation techniques for specific health conditions is limited, and these techniques should not replace conventional care or delay a doctor’s visit. Health.mil discusses breathing practices as potentially supporting parasympathetic activity and stress management, not as a guaranteed effect for everyone. NCCIH’s overview covers evidence, safety and limitations; Health.mil provides breathing-practice context.

When should you seek support?

Talk with a healthcare provider if stress is frequent, prolonged or interfering with daily life. Depending on your circumstances, support may include therapy, medication or stress-management approaches; a clinician can help assess what is appropriate. Do not start, stop or change medication based on a self-guided relaxation practice. If you have a heart or lung condition, the American Heart Association advises checking with a healthcare professional before trying its breathing techniques. The American Heart Association’s stress-management guidance provides that caution.
