Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If an FFmpeg YouTube stream stops after an RTMP timeout, first verify the stream-specific URL and protocol, then inspect the exact FFmpeg error. For an outgoing RTMP connection, -tcp_keepalive 1 enables basic TCP keepalive, which may help detect a dead peer or maintain an idle connection. It is not a media heartbeat, a reconnect guarantee, or a way to make YouTube keep a publishing session open.
What -tcp_keepalive 1 does—and what it does not
FFmpeg documents tcp_keepalive as enabling TCP SO_KEEPALIVE, with a default of off. The mechanism can help detect dead peers and maintain long-lived idle connections, but the option leaves keepalive timing to operating-system defaults. It does not prove that video or audio is reaching YouTube, repair a broken input, or guarantee that YouTube will preserve the session. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
For an RTMP publishing command, add the option as an output connection setting before the output URL, for example:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv -tcp_keepalive 1 "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a universal working configuration: replace the input and destination with your own, and retain the codecs and options appropriate to your source and FFmpeg build. Keep the stream key private. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build recognizes the option; option availability and placement can depend on the protocol and build.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not confuse timeout options with keepalive
FFmpeg has several similarly named network options, but their documented purposes differ. Neither RTMP timeout nor generic rw_timeout is documented as a periodic heartbeat.
| Option or setting | Scope and meaning | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
tcp_keepalive |
TCP transport-level SO_KEEPALIVE; FFmpeg documents a default of 0 (off), with timing left to OS defaults. | That media is flowing or YouTube will keep the publishing session open. |
RTMP timeout |
Maximum time to wait for an incoming connection; it implies listen mode. | An outgoing publisher keepalive interval. |
rw_timeout |
Maximum wait for network read/write operations, measured in microseconds. | A periodic keepalive or automatic stream recovery. |
HTTP reconnect options |
Documented for HTTP protocol cases, including certain streamed or non-seekable inputs. | A general-purpose RTMP publishing-output reconnect mechanism. |
These descriptions come from FFmpeg’s protocol options and format documentation. Check the documentation applicable to your installed version rather than inferring behavior from an option’s name. In particular, do not copy HTTP -reconnect advice into an RTMP output command and assume it will reconnect the publishing session.

Diagnose an FFmpeg YouTube stream that times out
- Capture the failure. Save the full command and the log lines around the failure. Record the FFmpeg version and build, the input protocol, and whether the process exits, hangs, or continues trying to write. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing logs.
- Check the destination against YouTube. Compare the output URL with the stream URL shown for that broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume an RTMP address is interchangeable with the RTMPS address. YouTube’s guidance for connection timeout or SSL errors is to verify the URL and encoder support for RTMPS. Use the secure URL provided by Live Control Room when using RTMPS.
- For an SSL error, verify the port for that URL. YouTube says to try port 443 where appropriate to the URL shown. Do not change the port blindly; use the endpoint details supplied for the stream.
- Use TCP keepalive only if the symptom fits. Try
-tcp_keepalive 1when investigating an idle connection or dead-peer detection. It cannot fix an invalid key or URL, a server-side rejection, a source that has stopped producing data, or a genuine network outage. - Match the log to the failing layer. An input-read timeout points first to the source or input connection. A rejected RTMP/RTMPS connection points to the endpoint, key, or protocol. A failed output write or exited process calls for diagnosis from the actual error; if recovery is needed, use a separately documented output-recovery method or process supervisor rather than assuming an HTTP input option applies.
YouTube’s procedural connection-timeout and SSL guidance is available in its help pages on live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and troubleshooting live streaming. The precise cause cannot be identified without the command, build, input details, and failure log.
