If OBS disconnects from YouTube just as you switch scenes, the timing alone does not prove the scene change caused it. Check OBS’s dropped-frame and rendering/encoding indicators, then compare the time of the disconnect with the OBS log and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Network instability and rendering or encoding overload need different fixes.
First, identify which kind of failure you have
OBS’s connection guide treats dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between your computer and the remote ingest server. A scene switch can also expose a performance bottleneck: OBS has to render and composite the active scene, and complex sources or competing GPU work can strain the system. Neither symptom, by itself, establishes what caused a particular disconnect.
- Network evidence: OBS reports dropped frames or connection instability, or YouTube’s stream-health messages point to an ingest or connection problem.
- Performance evidence: OBS shows rendering or encoding lag, especially when switching to a scene with demanding sources.
- Unclear evidence: The stream drops without a clear counter or warning. Capture the event and compare logs and stream-health messages before making broad changes.
There is no established statistic for how often scene changes cause OBS-to-YouTube disconnections. Diagnose your own session rather than assuming the transition is at fault.
Capture evidence during a low-risk test
- Reproduce the transition in a private or unlisted test stream, if practical.
- Use movement and audio representative of your actual stream, as YouTube recommends.
- Note the time, the scene you switched to, OBS’s dropped-frame counter, rendering and encoding indicators, and any OBS warning.
- Check the corresponding OBS log entries and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages.
Keep the test focused: change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the symptom changes with it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If OBS indicates dropped frames or connection instability
Follow the network path first. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends trying another server where available, lowering the output bitrate, and testing another streaming service to help determine whether a problem is service-related. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed, but that is a general starting point—not a guarantee of stable capacity. Use a speed test and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, while staying within YouTube’s guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Try a lower bitrate and a more stable connection
- Use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for the exact codec and video settings you use.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A Cat 6 cable is relevant only if you are testing a wired connection or replacing a cable you have reason to suspect is faulty; it is not a general cure for scene-switch disconnects.
- If the problem persists, check the modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender. Restart equipment as a diagnostic step; contact your ISP if the issue continues after checking your local network.
Check software and Windows network options
VPN instability, security software or firewall interference, network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers can affect streaming. Test suspected software carefully, then restore security protections. Get network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

On Windows, OBS’s connection guide describes Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options, recommends leaving Bind to IP at Default, and suggests testing IPv4 Only. If IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 choice. Exact availability can vary by OBS version and platform, so use the controls present in your current OBS settings.
Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment, where available, can lower bitrate during congestion. OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying network issue and may reduce video quality.

If rendering or encoding performance is the warning
OBS needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide identifies complex scenes and competing GPU work as possible constraints. Reduce load only after the performance indicators support that path.
Reduce GPU contention
- Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or lower in-game graphics settings to leave GPU capacity for OBS.
- Test the same scene transition with other demanding applications closed, then compare OBS’s performance indicators.
Simplify the demanding scene
- Temporarily disable costly filters or effects to see whether performance improves.
- Reduce the dimensions or number of browser sources where practical, and use lower-resolution media when it is suitable for the scene.
- Remove unnecessary sources and keep scene collections focused. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.
- If the system still struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
Avoid switching encoders as a blanket fix. First establish whether the observed problem is rendering/encoding performance rather than network connectivity.

Confirm YouTube’s ingest settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream’s health messages alongside the settings in OBS. YouTube advises choosing a quality appropriate for the connection, testing with representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health during the event.
- YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Its RTMP/RTMPS video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current recommendations list 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. That is an encoder recommendation, not evidence that bitrate caused a disconnect.
Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the precise combination you use; platform guidance can change.

Work through the symptoms without guessing
| What you observe | What to check next | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or intermittent connection warnings | Network stability, upload capacity, ingest path, VPN or security interference | Lower bitrate, test Ethernet, and try another server where available |
| Rendering or encoding lag at a demanding transition | GPU contention and sources, filters, or browser elements in the incoming scene | Close GPU-heavy apps and temporarily simplify that scene |
| YouTube reports a stream-health problem | The specific message and whether it coincides with OBS warnings | Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and repeat a representative test |
| No clear warning or consistent pattern | OBS log at the disconnect time and the sequence of scene changes | Reproduce in a low-risk test while recording counters and messages |
