If FFmpeg stops reaching YouTube Live from an India VPS, first establish whether FFmpeg exited, its RTMP(S) output connection failed, or YouTube stopped receiving usable data. Then verify the current YouTube stream URL and key, use the RTMPS endpoint, check sustained upload capacity and encoder settings, and choose recovery for the layer that actually failed. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options are not a universal retry switch for an RTMP/RTMPS output, and no evidence establishes India-specific routing as the cause.
What “reconnect” means in an FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup
A stream can appear frozen for several different reasons: FFmpeg may have exited; the process may still be running while its publishing connection has failed; the VPS may no longer be sending enough data; or YouTube may have stopped receiving the stream. Those cases need different evidence and recovery. A process restart can recover an exited process, for example, but cannot make an incorrect URL or key valid.
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error and reconnect_on_http_error under its HTTP protocol documentation. That scope does not establish that these flags reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output. If the input is HTTP, HTTP reconnect options may apply to that input; put input-specific options before the relevant -i and validate their behavior against the installed FFmpeg build. Do not assume that adding -reconnect 1 repairs a YouTube publishing connection.
Capture evidence before changing the command
Record one failure from start to finish. This makes it possible to distinguish an encoder exit from a connection or ingestion problem rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Save the FFmpeg version output, timestamp of the failure, full command with the stream key redacted, standard error log and process exit status.
- Check whether the FFmpeg process is still running after the visible stream freezes. Record “process exited” separately from “process alive, but no useful output.”
- Note the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health message and status at the same time. YouTube’s API includes
noData, meaning the live backend has no information about the stream’s health status; it is a status, not a diagnosis of the VPS network. See the LiveStreams status documentation.
There is no single universal FFmpeg error string established for this problem. Keep the surrounding log lines and timestamps rather than searching only for one presumed message.
Verify YouTube’s destination and RTMPS settings
- Open the current broadcast’s stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the assigned server URL and corresponding stream key. Avoid relying on a URL or key saved from an older broadcast configuration.
- Prefer the RTMPS server URL supplied there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; its guidance says the URL should use
rtmps, not merelyrtmp. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption and troubleshooting guidance. - Check that the URL and port are copied exactly and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the TLS/RTMPS connection required by that endpoint. If connection setup reports SSL trouble, confirm the protocol and endpoint first; YouTube notes port 443 as a troubleshooting option where appropriate to the endpoint and instructions.
- Redact the stream key in shared logs and support requests. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove the protocol, key, or broadcast configuration is correct.
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide provides additional protocol guidance. Use the endpoint shown for the broadcast rather than substituting a guessed server address.

Check upload capacity and encoder settings
A VPS must sustain the outgoing stream bitrate, not merely achieve a brief peak. YouTube recommends choosing quality based on reliable upload capacity, running a speed test to test upload bitrate, and testing before going live. Test from the VPS and under conditions representative of the intended stream; a generic or short speed test does not establish continuous headroom.
- Match quality to the route: if the VPS cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the stream settings and test again rather than assuming the ingest endpoint is at fault.
- Use CBR: YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate.
- Set keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Test representative material: include the expected audio and motion, then monitor stream health and messages before relying on the feed.
- Check the current bitrate table: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. Consult its current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance instead of copying an isolated number into a durable command.
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 options, along with up to 60 fps. The appropriate combination depends on the encoder, chosen resolution and current YouTube guidance; a codec being listed does not by itself verify that a particular FFmpeg build or command is configured correctly.

Choose recovery for the layer that failed
| Observed failure | What to investigate | Recovery implication |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Exit status and stderr at the failure timestamp; command, input availability and endpoint configuration. | An external process supervisor may restart FFmpeg, but a restart does not validate the URL, key, network path or YouTube broadcast. |
| FFmpeg remains alive, but YouTube receives no useful data | Output connection logs, VPS reachability, sustained upload and YouTube stream-health messages. | Restarting only because the process is alive may not address a stalled output. Identify the failed output or route before choosing an action. |
| HTTP input fails | Whether the input itself uses HTTP and whether the installed FFmpeg build supports the relevant HTTP options. | HTTP reconnect options may be relevant on the input side; they do not establish recovery of an RTMP(S) output. |
| YouTube reports no data or unhealthy reception | Correlate YouTube’s message with FFmpeg logs, process state and upload observations. | Treat the status as evidence about what YouTube reports, not proof of a particular VPS or regional network cause. |
If you use an external supervisor to restart an exited process, treat it as process recovery only. The cited protocol and YouTube references do not establish a complete supervisor configuration or guarantee uninterrupted continuity. Repeatedly resubmitting an invalid endpoint or key can simply repeat the failure; verify those settings before relying on automatic restarts.
Test the India VPS route without assuming geography is the cause
No cited source establishes that an India VPS, India-specific routing, a firewall, peering, packet loss or YouTube ingest availability in India causes this failure. Treat geography or the provider as hypotheses to test, not conclusions.

- Compare repeated outbound connection and sustained-upload observations from the server, and retain timestamps alongside FFmpeg and YouTube health logs.
- If available, use another destination or VPS provider as a diagnostic control. A difference can help narrow the investigation, but does not alone identify why the routes differ.
- Ask the VPS provider for evidence about the relevant outbound path and any observed network events at the failure times.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel using uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a different route from maintaining your own FFmpeg process on a VPS: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
