Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A “connection reset” tells you that a connection failed; by itself, it does not identify whether the cause was FFmpeg, the VPS, a network route, a firewall, or YouTube ingest. To diagnose a Mumbai VPS disconnect, preserve the timestamped FFmpeg log, compare it with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then measure sustained outbound capacity and check what changed on the VPS or provider at that time. The information available here does not establish a Mumbai-specific cause.
What a connection reset does—and does not—tell you
RTMP uses TCP/IP, and FFmpeg documents port 1935 as RTMP’s default port. A reset or other socket failure indicates that the connection failed, not which component ended it or where along the path the failure occurred. Also, do not assume your stream is using RTMP or port 1935: check the actual publishing URL and protocol in your FFmpeg command or configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation; YouTube encoder settings.
There is no evidence here that Mumbai, a particular VPS provider, or a YouTube ingest region caused the disconnect. Establishing that would require the affected VPS’s logs and measurements, and ideally the provider’s incident or network records.
1. Preserve the failure evidence
Start with the exact failure window. Record the timestamp in UTC and keep enough log context to see what FFmpeg was doing before and after the disconnect—not just the final error line.

- Save the complete FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing it. Never publish a stream key.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration, for example from the output of
ffmpeg -version. - Save the full FFmpeg log around the failure and note the exact UTC time.
- Record whether FFmpeg exited, continued retrying, or remained running while reporting a protocol or socket write failure.
- Note any VPS restart, host maintenance, firewall or security-policy change, connection-tracking event, or process-supervisor action at the same time. These are leads to check, not proven causes.
Do not infer a specific cause from an error string without the surrounding log and corroborating evidence. No log, FFmpeg build, command, or provider incident record has been supplied for this particular disconnect.
2. Compare FFmpeg with YouTube stream health
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its stream-health status and timestamped messages for the same period as the FFmpeg log. YouTube reports ingest problems such as incorrect format, bitrate, audio or video configuration, and keyframe frequency separately. If it flags one of these, verify and correct the encoder settings before treating the incident as a VPS routing problem. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; Live streaming error messages.

If the encoder output and CPU appear healthy but the connection still drops, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points you to the strength of the outbound internet connection. A healthy-looking encoder alone does not prove the VPS-to-ingest path stayed available.
3. Check the encoder settings YouTube expects
Use the current YouTube encoder guidance as a configuration check, not as proof of what your stream is actually sending. YouTube documents RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| H.264 example in YouTube’s guidance | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder-setting examples, not measurements of your VPS’s available upload capacity. Confirm the current codec-specific table in YouTube Help when configuring a stream; the recommendations can change.
- Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval actually used by the FFmpeg command.
- Match the applicable YouTube bitrate guidance to the stream’s codec and video mode rather than copying an H.264 number to another codec.
- Check audio settings and YouTube’s stream-health messages for format or configuration warnings.
4. Measure VPS upload bandwidth during streaming conditions
The relevant direction is outbound from the VPS. A download-speed result does not show whether the server can sustain the bitrate it must send to YouTube. Measure sustained outbound throughput from the VPS to the relevant destination or a suitable measurement endpoint while conditions resemble the affected stream, then compare the result with the combined configured audio and video bitrate.

YouTube recommends upload capacity for the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of continuity or a provider service-level commitment. YouTube also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. YouTube streaming tips.
- Write down the configured video and audio bitrates and add them to get the total stream bitrate.
- Measure outbound throughput during a representative sustained session. A one-off speed test can be a useful check, but it cannot establish that an intermittent route remained healthy for a long stream.
- Repeat measurements near the failure window if possible, and compare their timestamps with the FFmpeg log and YouTube stream-health messages.
- Look for a sustained upload shortfall, a brief disruption, or a change that coincides with the disconnect. Record the measurement endpoint and conditions so that another test can be compared fairly.
If the available outbound capacity is insufficient, reduce bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s current recommendations and retest. Do not treat a speed test against an unrelated destination as conclusive proof about the VPS-to-YouTube path.

5. Check the publishing path and VPS events
Verify the actual ingest URL and protocol, then check whether a firewall or security policy, connection tracking, host restart, process supervisor, or provider event coincided with the recorded time. These are reasonable items to investigate, not causes established by the word “reset.” FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation describes RTMP as TCP/IP and lists 1935 as the default RTMP port; neither fact proves that your command uses that port.
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted extension to RTMP. Switching protocols may be appropriate when configuring the stream to YouTube’s guidance, but a protocol change alone does not establish or fix an underlying network fault.
6. Test one change at a time
Once the timestamps and measurements suggest a likely direction, make a controlled test rather than changing several things at once.
- If capacity looks limited: lower the configured bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s current recommendations, then repeat the sustained upload test and stream.
- If the route or provider looks suspect: run a controlled comparison from another network or provider while keeping media settings constant. Ask the VPS provider whether its records show an incident at the affected time.
- If YouTube reports an ingest-setting problem: correct the specific codec, bitrate, audio/video, or keyframe setting it identifies, then check whether the corresponding warning clears.
Attribute an improvement to a change only when the test isolates that variable and the result is repeatable. Without the actual command, logs, stream-health record, measurements, and provider evidence, the root cause and whether the stream is bandwidth-limited remain unknown.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports a disconnect or socket/protocol failure | Use the full log and UTC timestamp to correlate YouTube stream health, VPS measurements, and provider or host events. The message alone does not locate the fault. |
| YouTube reports an encoder format, bitrate, audio/video, or keyframe warning | Check the actual FFmpeg output against the current YouTube encoder guidance and address the specific warning. |
| A download test looks fast, but the stream drops | Measure sustained outbound throughput from the VPS; download capacity is not a substitute for upload capacity. |
| A single speed test passes | Repeat under representative streaming conditions and near the failure window. A one-time result does not establish long-session route stability. |
| Changing bitrate appears to help | Repeat a controlled test with other variables held constant before concluding that capacity was the cause. |
