If an FFmpeg promo playlist stops at a filename containing spaces, inspect the playlist line first—if FFmpeg is using its concat demuxer. Shell quotes around the playlist filename do not quote paths inside the playlist. The concat-demuxer script has its own rules: paths with spaces or special characters must be escaped or enclosed in single quotes. That is the first check, not a confirmed diagnosis; the exact command and error are needed to identify the cause.
First confirm what kind of playlist FFmpeg is reading
The advice about file lines applies to the concat demuxer, typically invoked with -f concat -i list.txt, or used with a list that starts with ffconcat version 1.0. If your input is an M3U8 playlist, or a wrapper generates a different kind of list, concat-demuxer quoting rules may not apply. Do not change the file paths until you have confirmed the input format.
FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation says: “Path to a file to read; special characters and spaces must be escaped with backslash or single quotes.” Its example for a space-containing path is file '/mnt/share/file 2.wav'. This is syntax in the concat script, not shell syntax.
Check the failing line and safe-path setting
Quote the path in the concat script
Open the list and inspect the exact file directive for the clip where processing stops. A path with spaces can be written in the documented single-quoted form, for example:

file '/mnt/share/store promo.mp4'If the filename itself contains a single quote, use the escaping form shown in the FFmpeg documentation; do not assume that shell escaping rules work inside the script. If a program generates the list, check the generated text itself rather than only the code or command that produced it.
Understand what -safe 0 does
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. FFmpeg defines safe paths as relative paths with no protocol specification, made only of letters, digits, period, underscore, and hyphen, and with no leading period in any path component. A space is outside that documented character set, so safe-path validation may reject the name even when the path exists.

Setting -safe 0 allows any filename, but it relaxes path validation; it does not correct a misspelling, repair malformed quoting, or make a missing file readable. Use it only for a trusted, locally controlled list. For example, the option is placed before the input:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt ...Keep any existing output options in place. Do not use an untrusted list with relaxed path validation.

Verify that every path resolves and is readable
Relative paths are resolved in the FFmpeg process’s actual execution context. A list that works from an interactive terminal may fail when launched by a scheduled task, service, or script whose working directory differs. Check the path from that process’s working directory, confirm that the file exists, and ensure the account running FFmpeg can read it. The FFmpeg concat wiki shows relative and absolute path examples; automatically generated lists still need valid concat-script syntax.
- Confirm the directory and filename match exactly, including capitalization where the operating system distinguishes it.
- Check that the playlist generator has not split a path at a space or altered quotes and backslashes.
- Try reading the affected file directly with FFmpeg to distinguish a path or permission problem from a playlist problem.
Check whether the promo clips are compatible
Fixing a filename can reveal a separate concat-demuxer limitation. FFmpeg expects the input files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base for this method. If the clips differ, the error may occur after FFmpeg successfully opens the path.

Separate a local playlist failure from a YouTube publishing failure
Read the log in order. If FFmpeg fails while opening a local file or parsing the concat list, diagnose the input before changing YouTube settings. If it opens and advances through the playlist, but publishing fails later, identify the output protocol and inspect the later log entries.
For YouTube HLS ingestion, YouTube documents HTTP 400 for a malformed URL or an unparseable or unsupported playlist, and HTTP 401 for a corrupted or expired cid parameter. Those server responses do not by themselves show that a local filename caused the failure. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation.

What to include when asking for help
To pinpoint an unresolved failure, share the full FFmpeg command with secrets redacted, the exact failing playlist line, the directory structure, your operating system and shell, ffmpeg -version, the complete relevant error excerpt, and whether the output is RTMP or YouTube HLS. Never post your YouTube stream key.
