It tells you FFmpeg could not process data at the point reported; the cause might be an unreadable file, a URL returning something other than media, a concat-list problem, or another input issue. Start by finding which input failed and probing that exact input with ffprobe. Do not change YouTube output settings until you know whether FFmpeg can read the source.
What the error means—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s 8.0 error reference defines the message as “Invalid data found when processing input.” That identifies an invalid-data error, not its root cause. By itself, it does not establish that a video is corrupted, that your loop option is wrong, or that YouTube rejected the stream.
The timing matters. An error while opening an input points you toward the named file, URL, or list. An error that appears after playback has begun may involve data encountered later during processing. A YouTube ingest problem is a separate possibility: do not treat an input-parsing error as proof that YouTube rejected your stream key or output format.
Find the input and stage that failed
- Keep the exact command. Note every
-iinput, its order, and whether you are using a local media file, a URL, a playlist, or a concat list. - Read the complete log around the first error. Identify the input or filename mentioned immediately before it. Check whether the error occurs while opening that input or only after the stream has started. Later errors can be consequences of the first failure.
- Do not change several variables at once. First test the input locally. Keep unrelated output and YouTube settings unchanged while isolating the source problem.
Without the command and full log, the specific cause cannot be determined from the error text alone.

Probe the exact input with ffprobe
Run ffprobe against the same local file or URL passed to FFmpeg. For a local file:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the actual path. For a URL, use that exact URL in place of the filename. Look for a detected container or input format, a duration where available, and the audio and video streams FFmpeg recognizes. A filename extension is only a label: a file whose extension does not match its contents may still be readable, while a file ending in .mp4 may contain something that is not an MP4 video.
- ffprobe identifies a format and streams: the input is at least recognizable. Check the full FFmpeg log to see whether the failure happens later, and test a short local read before trying the live output again.
- ffprobe reports invalid data or cannot identify a format: verify what the path or URL actually returns before attempting a repair.
If the input is a file or URL
Check that the path resolves to the intended file
Confirm the file exists at the path used in the command and that the account running FFmpeg can read it. If it is a downloaded file, confirm the download completed; an incomplete file may fail even if its name and extension look correct.

Check what a URL actually returns
A URL can return an HTML error page, login page, or other non-media response instead of the video data you expected. Check that the URL is accessible from the machine running FFmpeg and resolves to media rather than an error response. Do not infer the response type from the URL’s suffix alone.

Consider format support only when the evidence points there
If the input is real media but FFmpeg cannot identify its container, an unsupported container or a build without the necessary demuxer is one possible explanation. The error alone does not establish either; first verify the actual input and the format reported in the log.
If the command uses a concat list
For a command shaped like ffmpeg -f concat -i list.txt ..., FFmpeg expects list.txt to be a concat script, not simply a plain list of filenames. Check its entries and the files they reference.

- Confirm every referenced file exists and is readable from the FFmpeg process.
- Check whether filenames are relative to the process’s working directory or should be absolute paths.
- Review the concat demuxer’s
safepath setting. FFmpeg documents that safe-path checks reject unsafe paths when enabled by default. - Do not add
-safe 0as a generic fix. It changes which paths the demuxer accepts; it does not repair invalid media or a malformed list.
FFmpeg’s formats documentation also describes automatic conversion for certain concatenated packet data. That behavior does not make an unreadable source file or invalid list entry valid.
Repair only after confirming what is wrong
Work on a copy of the source and match the remedy to the evidence. A repair command is not a universal fix for every invalid-data error.
Try a stream-copy remux when packets are readable
If the media packets can be read but the container may be the issue, try writing them into a fresh container without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4
Use the correct input and output names for your case, then probe output.mp4. Stream copying does not repair damaged packets; if reading the source fails, the remux may fail too.
Generate timestamps only when timestamps are missing
If the log and probe indicate missing presentation timestamps, test -fflags +genpts as a conditional option, for example:
ffmpeg -fflags +genpts -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4

This is not a general invalid-data switch. Use it only when missing timestamps fit the observed problem.
Re-encode only as a last resort for damaged packets
Re-encoding may be appropriate when evidence points to damaged packets that a stream-copy remux cannot pass through. It takes additional processing and can change the media; it is not the first diagnostic step. Test the resulting file locally before using it as a live input.

- Run
ffprobeon the exact input that will be used for the live command. - Confirm FFmpeg can read a short local section or test output from that input without the same input error.
- Only then retry the live command, keeping its unrelated output settings fixed so a new failure is easier to isolate.
- If input parsing succeeds but YouTube still does not receive the stream, investigate that separate output or ingest failure using its own log messages.
Common misdiagnoses
- “The extension says MP4, so the file must be valid.” Extensions do not prove the contents; probe the file.
- “Adding
-safe 0fixes concat errors.” It changes path acceptance, not the validity of the listed media. - “The error proves YouTube rejected my stream.” It describes invalid data processing. Establish whether FFmpeg failed to open or process an input before changing YouTube settings.
- “Re-encoding always repairs it.” Re-encoding cannot reliably help if FFmpeg cannot read the source data in the first place.
