Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst find where the green frames appear: in the original recording, in a local player, in FFmpeg’s output, or only in the YouTube playback. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Preserve the source, compare the same timestamps at each stage, and inspect FFmpeg’s log and stream details before changing settings. For a new SDR YouTube export, use the platform’s compatibility baseline—MP4, H.264, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, the recording frame rate, and BT.709—while remembering that compatible settings cannot repair corruption already present in the source.
Find the first stage where the green frames appear
Keep an untouched copy of the recording before testing. Compare the same suspect moments at each available stage; the earliest point where the frames turn green narrows the investigation without assuming a cause.
- Original recording: Play the unmodified file and note the earliest timestamp with green frames.
- Another player or decoder: If available, check the same timestamp in a second player. If only one player shows the defect, investigate its playback path before concluding that the file is damaged.
- FFmpeg output: Make a short test from the source, then play that output locally. If the original looks clean but the test does not, focus on FFmpeg’s command, build, decoder, encoder, and reported formats.
- YouTube playback: If both local files look clean but the uploaded version does not, check the export’s compatibility and investigate the uploaded rendition rather than presuming the source or transcode is at fault.
Keep notes on the timestamp and result at each stage. Color shifts and genuinely corrupted or green frames are not necessarily the same problem.
Collect the command, logs, and stream details
Before changing settings, save the exact command and the complete relevant console output. These details help distinguish a format-selection issue, a decode or encode failure, and a problem that appears only during playback or after upload.

- FFmpeg version and build:
ffmpeg -version - Input container and stream information:
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4 - The complete FFmpeg command and its output, including warnings and errors.
- The earliest failing timestamp, and whether that timestamp is green in the source, local FFmpeg output, and YouTube playback.
- Where relevant, the playback application and whether hardware decoding is enabled.
FFmpeg’s documentation site tracks the newest revision, which may not match the version installed on your computer. Check the documentation relevant to your build when interpreting an option or log message. FFmpeg documentation
Check pixel format and encoder support
Do not treat a requested pixel format as proof that FFmpeg used it. FFmpeg documents that if an encoder does not support the requested format, it can warn and select the best format supported by that encoder. Review the log for the requested and selected pixel formats, conversion warnings, decoder errors, and encoder failures. Then check the supported formats for the specific encoder in use. A leading + on the pixel-format request changes the behavior: FFmpeg can fail if it cannot select that format, and automatic conversions in filtergraphs are disabled. That can be useful as a diagnostic constraint when appropriate, but it is not a universal repair setting; it changes conversion behavior and may cause an encode to fail.
Only after confirming that the source decodes cleanly, make a short controlled test using a format combination supported by the chosen encoder. For an SDR YouTube export, H.264 in MP4 with 4:2:0 chroma is a platform-aligned starting point. Do not assume it will fix green frames until the input codec, pixel format, frame rate, color metadata, FFmpeg build, and point of failure are understood.

Use YouTube’s SDR guidance as an export baseline
YouTube’s published recommendations for SDR uploads include an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and the same frame rate used when recording. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and describes how it handles unspecified or unsupported color metadata. Treat these as compatibility guidance, not a repair guarantee: if green frames are already in the source, changing export settings cannot restore the missing image data. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings
Color metadata problems can produce color shifts, but that does not establish that a color-tag mismatch caused green or corrupted frames. Check the stream properties and the stage where the symptom begins before changing color settings.

Separate playback behavior from file damage
If one player shows green frames while another does not, compare playback before treating the file itself as corrupted. FFmpeg’s ffplay documentation includes the output_corrupt option, which permits output of potentially corrupted frames. It changes playback/output behavior; it does not reconstruct missing image data or repair the video. FFplay documentation
Common troubleshooting outcomes
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The original recording is green at the same timestamp in multiple players. | The defect is present before this FFmpeg conversion. Preserve the original and inspect the recording workflow; an export setting should not be presented as a guaranteed repair. |
| The original is clean, but the FFmpeg test output is green. | Review the command and complete log, especially decoder/encoder errors, pixel-format selection, and encoder format support. Confirm the FFmpeg build and test a short segment only after the source is known to decode cleanly. |
| Only one local player shows green frames. | Compare another player or decoder and check the playback path, including hardware decoding if relevant, before concluding that the file is damaged. |
| Local files look clean, but YouTube playback shows green frames. | Check the exported file and its stream properties against YouTube’s SDR guidance, then compare the uploaded playback at the same timestamp. Do not infer that a conforming export necessarily repairs or explains the problem. |
| The log says the requested pixel format is unavailable or selects a different format. | Check formats supported by the selected encoder. Use a supported format for a controlled test; a leading + can force failure and disable automatic filtergraph conversions rather than silently selecting another format. |
