Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your clips have compatible streams and you want to join them without re-encoding. Use the concat filter when clips need to be normalized, filtered, or re-encoded. Neither choice alone guarantees a seamless loop or a reliable YouTube Live stream: check the files, test the transitions, and configure the live output separately.
Which FFmpeg concat method should you use?
| Situation | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Clips have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to avoid another encode | Concat demuxer | It joins packets consecutively without decoding and re-encoding them. FFmpeg describes this as the route for avoiding re-encoding (FFmpeg FAQ; FFmpeg Documentation). |
| Clips need normalization, filtering, or re-encoding | Concat filter | FFmpeg recommends the filter method when re-encoding is needed (FFmpeg FAQ). |
| You are unsure whether the files are compatible or their durations are accurate | Inspect and test before choosing | The demuxer has stream requirements, and duration or timestamp differences can affect continuity (FFmpeg Documentation). |
The key distinction is where the joining happens. The demuxer presents packets from successive files as one continuous input; the filter decodes and processes streams, which allows them to be brought into a consistent output format at the cost of encoding.
How the concat demuxer works—and where it can fail
The concat demuxer reads a text file listing the media files and demuxes them consecutively as if their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and subsequent files follow the previous one. This is a packet-level join, not a general tool for making unlike media files identical.
Check stream compatibility
FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Differences in resolution, frame rate, stream layout, codec parameters, or audio layout may make a direct join unsuitable; inspect the actual streams against the requirements of your installed FFmpeg version rather than assuming that similar-looking files are compatible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the files do not match and need processing, use a filter-based workflow and encode a consistent output. That extra encode may take time and can affect quality, but it gives you a way to normalize or filter the inputs before they reach YouTube.
Watch timestamps and durations
The demuxer shifts timestamps globally. FFmpeg warns that this can create gaps when streams inside a file do not have exactly matching lengths. Incorrect or estimated file durations can also cause artifacts; a duration directive in the list file can override a duration. Do not treat a successful command exit as proof that the join is clean: inspect audio and video around each boundary.
Prepare and test a looping playlist
The right concat method depends on your source files and installed FFmpeg build. A universal loop command cannot be assumed to work for every concat input arrangement, so confirm the loop option and its placement in the help or documentation for your installed version. Test a finite run before scheduling an extended live broadcast.

- Inspect each source file. Check its video and audio streams, codec parameters, time base, frame rate, resolution, and duration. Decide whether the streams meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements.
- Choose the join method. Use the concat demuxer for compatible files when avoiding re-encoding is important. Use the concat filter if the clips need re-encoding, normalization, or other filter processing.
- Build a test output. Join a representative selection of clips and review both audio and video at every transition. If the programme loops, check the last-to-first boundary as well as the joins between files.
- Verify looping separately. Confirm the loop option and where it belongs for your FFmpeg version and input arrangement. Run long enough to cross a complete playlist boundary before relying on it live.
- Configure the live encoder output. Match YouTube’s current requirements for the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes. The concat method does not set these output choices for you.
- Test and monitor the broadcast. Send a test stream, listen for audio problems, check motion and transitions, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages before and during the live session.
These checks matter especially for documentary playlists: a quiet or black interval may be part of the programme, a timestamp gap, or a stream problem. Reviewing transitions helps distinguish intended content from a technical break.
Set YouTube Live output independently of concatenation
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate: for H.264, the cited table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps (YouTube live encoder settings).
Choose the bitrate for your actual output mode and a connection that can sustain it; these example figures are not universal settings for every codec or frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and advises leaving upload headroom—20% is its recommendation in its streaming tips. It also recommends testing audio and motion and monitoring stream health (YouTube Streaming tips).

To connect an encoder, copy the live stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Treat the key as a credential: keep it private and use the correct key for the intended broadcast.
Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a loop intended to run longer, do not assume YouTube will preserve the entire programme as one complete archive; plan how you will handle the broadcast and any recordings beyond that duration (YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance). A long-running playlist also needs ongoing monitoring rather than relying on the concat choice to guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

Troubleshoot common problems
The demuxer rejects the list or produces a bad join
Likely cause: The files’ streams or time bases differ, or the inputs do not meet the installed version’s requirements. What to do: Inspect the streams, then either select compatible assets or use a filter workflow that re-encodes them to a consistent output.

There is a gap, jump, or artifact at a boundary
Likely cause: Timestamp adjustment, streams with mismatched internal lengths, inaccurate or estimated durations, or a discontinuity already present in the clips. What to do: Review the affected files and the joined output; check whether a list-file duration directive is appropriate, then retest the boundary.
The final clip does not lead cleanly back to the first
Likely cause: The loop boundary has not been checked, or loop behavior differs for the installed FFmpeg build and input arrangement. What to do: Confirm the loop option in that build’s documentation and test a complete cycle, including the last-to-first transition, before going live.
YouTube reports stream instability
Likely cause: The output settings or available upload bandwidth do not match the stream, or the stream has not been properly tested. What to do: Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, and network headroom; test the stream and watch YouTube’s health messages. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom (Streaming tips).
