You do not need to turn a full 24/7 broadcast into a Short to promote it. Make a Short from one useful, representative moment, then attach your channel’s live stream with YouTube Studio’s Related video control. Viewers can tap that link beneath your channel handle; URLs typed into a Short’s description or comments are not clickable. This creates a path to the stream, not a guaranteed increase in live viewers.
Why Shorts can promote a continuous live stream
A Short works best here as a small, complete piece of content: a documentary fact, a striking moment, an answer to a recurring question, or a brief explanation that reflects what viewers will find on the live channel. Its job is to give someone a reason to watch more, then make the relevant live destination easy to reach.
YouTube lets creators attach another video, Short, or live stream from the same channel as a Related video. The selected destination can be public or unlisted, must comply with Community Guidelines, and the feature requires advanced feature access. When attached, the clickable link appears beneath the creator’s handle in the Shorts player. YouTube Help: Add a related video to your YouTube Shorts.
Do not promise that a Short will produce live viewers or subscribers. Shorts discovery is personalized and competitive: YouTube describes signals including whether people watch, ignore, or mark a Short as not interested, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes, and post-watch surveys. Topic interest, competition, and seasonality also affect reach. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for videos to perform well, and Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form video recommendations. Make a Short that represents the live channel
Choose a moment with its own payoff
Look for a recurring segment, useful explanation, compelling scene, or common viewer question in the stream. Select a moment that makes sense without the viewer having watched the broadcast before it. Avoid posting a long cutdown just to fill the Shorts feed; the Short should offer a worthwhile idea or moment on its own.
Edit for a clear opening and an accurate invitation
Start with the point or moment rather than a long preamble. Keep the invitation simple and truthful: explain what the ongoing stream actually offers, and direct interested viewers to the related-video link below your handle. Do not imply that the stream is a different event or contains something it does not.

Upload, attach the destination, and save
- Upload the Short to your YouTube channel.
- Open the Short in YouTube Studio and choose Related video.
- Select the relevant public or unlisted live stream from the same channel.
- Save the change, then check the Short in the player to confirm the related-video link is visible beneath your handle.
If you cannot use Related video, check whether the channel has advanced feature access. Also confirm the chosen destination is on the same channel and follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube Help: Add a related video to your YouTube Shorts.
Use the clickable path—not a description URL
URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. A viewer may see text there, but it is not the direct tap-through route many creators expect. Do not tell people to “click the link in the description” or rely on a pasted URL in comments as the Short’s main call to action. Use Related video instead. Know the difference between horizontal and vertical live discovery
For a horizontal 24/7 stream, use Related video
A horizontal encoder stream can be the destination attached to a Short, but it should not be presented as a live tile in the Shorts vertical-live feed. YouTube says scheduled streams, Premieres, and horizontal live streams do not appear in that feed. The related-video link is therefore the clear route from a Short to a horizontal continuous broadcast. Vertical mobile live has a separate discovery opportunity
YouTube’s mobile app has a vertical-live viewing experience. For eligible mobile vertical streams, YouTube may also offer a way to save a Short highlight. This is not a general clip-extraction feature for every always-on encoder stream: the stated conditions include a 10-minute-to-12-hour vertical stream made through the YouTube mobile app, chat enabled, not made for kids, and compliance with safety standards. These approaches have different constraints rather than a universal winner. Horizontal continuous streams can be promoted through a related link; vertical mobile streams may also have a vertical-live feed and eligible highlight workflow. Choose based on the channel’s actual production format and audience, not an assumption that one orientation always grows faster.

Run a modest, consistent experiment: publish a small set of distinct Shorts based on moments or questions that genuinely represent the stream, attach the same relevant destination when appropriate, and review results over a meaningful period. In Analytics, look at audience response and Engaged views for each Short, then inspect live traffic sources for signs that viewers are reaching the broadcast from vertical Live or other surfaces. Interpret view totals carefully. YouTube changed the Shorts view-count definition on March 31, 2025: the headline count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch time. Engaged views remain in Analytics and indicate viewers who chose to continue watching, making them more useful when assessing whether a Short held attention. Do not compare raw counts from before and after that change as though they use the same definition. YouTube Help: Get started creating YouTube Shorts.
YouTube does not publish a universal Short-to-livestream conversion rate in the cited guidance. A change in live traffic alongside Shorts is worth monitoring, but by itself does not prove that a Short caused the change.
Plan around archives and event promotion
YouTube says stream archives are uploaded by default and recommends using playlists for archives and highlight clips; public archives can help viewers discover future streams. A continuous channel can organize useful past broadcasts and clips so a newcomer has somewhere relevant to go beyond the live player. For a launch or relaunch, YouTube’s event-specific guidance recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours ahead, using a teaser or trailer, and promoting across connected social accounts. Treat that timing as event guidance, not a required formula for an ongoing stream. YouTube Help: Promote your live stream.
