Put the option before -i. That makes the file repeat; it does not guarantee a perceptually seamless join, so inspect the source and test the loop boundary before relying on it live.
Use this FFmpeg command
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "gaming-vod.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 160k
-f flv "rtmps://SERVER/live2/STREAM_KEY"Replace gaming-vod.mp4 with the path to your recording. Replace the destination with the stream URL and key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel, so do not publish it or leave it in public logs.
-stream_loop -1 is an input option, so it belongs before -i; -1 tells FFmpeg to loop indefinitely. -re reads the file at its native rate so it feeds the encoder like a live source rather than as fast as the computer can process it. The example assumes the input contains both video and audio streams.
Adjust the encoding settings to your source and connection
The example’s 10 Mbps video bitrate is an illustrative starting point for 1080p30 H.264, not a universal setting. YouTube Help’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, RTMP or RTMPS ingest, and up to 60 fps. For H.264, its recommended examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually intend to send.

-b:v 10Msets the target video bitrate, while-maxrate 10Mand-bufsize 20Mconstrain rate variation in this example. YouTube recommends CBR for encoder output; configure and verify your FFmpeg output accordingly rather than assuming a sample command meets every ingest recommendation.-g 60means a 60-frame GOP. It gives a 2-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps. At another output frame rate, adjust the GOP so the interval is about 2 seconds; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.-b:a 160ksets the example AAC audio bitrate. Confirm audio is present and listen for clipping, silence, or an unwanted change in level.- Leave network capacity for fluctuation. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. A higher video bitrate is not automatically better if your upload connection cannot sustain it.
Set up YouTube Live and start the feed
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. If live streaming is not enabled, YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the command’s destination in the form
rtmps://SERVER/live2/STREAM_KEY. Use the actual values YouTube provides for that stream; the example values are not a working server address or key. - Run the command, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before promoting or relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio.
- To finish, stop FFmpeg and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival note is not a promise of unlimited uninterrupted runtime.
Why an infinite loop may still have a seam
The command repeats the input, but the playback boundary is determined by the media as well as the loop option. A pause, repeated frame, audio tick, or brief mismatch can occur if the audio and video durations differ or if timestamps and codec boundaries do not align cleanly. FFmpeg’s concat documentation discusses possible timestamp-related gaps when streams do not have exactly the same duration and the need for matching stream properties when concatenating files. That does not establish that every single-file loop will gap; it does make checking the actual source worthwhile.
Test the specific VOD before going public
- Inspect the file’s video and audio streams and their durations. Confirm that it has the audio and video you expect.
- Play several repeats locally and watch and listen across each join. Pay particular attention to the first and last frames, audio tails, and any change in game or music ambience.
- If one stream runs longer than the other, prepare a corrected source or explicitly map and trim the streams to a common duration before looping.
- Test with an unlisted or private YouTube stream. Confirm the preview behaves as expected and monitor stream health at the loop boundary.
If the issue is a visible or audible pause, investigate timestamps, encoding structure, and audio/video lengths in the source before changing unrelated hardware or simply raising the bitrate.

Common problems and fixes
