The eight-episode season is the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud anthology. It is based on Laurence Leamer’s nonfiction book Capote’s Women, and the official ABC series synopsis identifies Babe Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill as the central group. The U.S. season premiered on FX on January 31, 2024, and the completed season is listed through the FX/Hulu ecosystem; availability can vary by country and platform.
Who plays Truman Capote?
Tom Hollander plays Truman Capote, the celebrated author and social performer at the center of the season. Hollander’s Capote is an outsider who has gained extraordinary access to an elite circle but remains anxious about whether that access is permanent. He entertains the swans, listens to their confidences, and studies their behavior as both a friend and a writer.
The character’s central contradiction drives the season: Capote needs the women’s affection and protection, yet his literary ambition depends on revealing the world they believe they control. The series portrays Capote as witty, needy, observant, manipulative, and increasingly self-destructive rather than reducing him to either a charming genius or a simple villain.
Why is Babe Paley the emotional center?
Naomi Watts plays Barbara “Babe” Paley, usually presented as Capote’s favorite and most emotionally significant swan. Babe is married to William S. Paley, the founder of CBS, and represents the elegance, taste, wealth, and social authority that Capote both admires and wants to possess.

Babe gives Capote access to a private world and treats him as a trusted companion; Capote’s fictionalized treatment of that world makes the eventual rupture feel personal, public, and irreversible. FX also credits Watts as an executive producer, alongside her role as Babe.
Who were the four central swans?
The four central swans are Babe Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill. They share social prominence and a connection to Capote, but the series treats them as distinct women with different marriages, temperaments, forms of influence, and levels of trust.

Diane Lane as Nancy “Slim” Keith
Diane Lane plays Nancy “Slim” Keith, an influential New York socialite and style figure. Slim is less sentimental about Capote than Babe, making her useful to the story’s exploration of social judgment and opportunism. Her character recognizes that charm can conceal calculation and helps show the tensions within the group itself.
The Television Academy identifies Lane’s Emmy-nominated role as Nancy “Slim” Keith. That formal credit is useful because the character is often referred to simply as Slim in accounts of the historical circle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChloë Sevigny as C.Z. Guest
Chloë Sevigny plays C.Z. Guest, a socialite, author, and established member of the high-society group. Guest’s comparatively composed presence demonstrates that the women are not interchangeable versions of one privileged stereotype. Her historical reputation as a tastemaker associated with American sportswear and preppy style also expands the show’s portrait of the culture Capote entered.
Calista Flockhart as Lee Radziwill
Calista Flockhart plays Lee Radziwill, the socialite and younger sister of Jacqueline Kennedy. Radziwill brings another kind of cultural power to the ensemble: her world overlaps with New York society, celebrity, politics, and aristocratic glamour. Her inclusion makes the swans’ network feel larger than Capote’s closest friendship with Babe.
Why is Ann Woodward important to the story?
Demi Moore plays Ann “Bang-Bang” Woodward, whose troubled marriage and the shooting death of her husband became material that Capote later transformed into a thinly veiled fictional story. Woodward is important not because she belongs neatly inside the core swan group, but because her story places the ethical consequences of Capote’s writing at the center of the season.
The real-life scandal behind “La Côte Basque, 1965” connects Woodward’s portrayal to questions of privacy, culpability, class, and literary exploitation. Historical accounts differ in emphasis, and the television version dramatizes events; descriptions of motives or specific conduct should therefore be understood as the series’ interpretation rather than settled biography. Smithsonian’s historical background and TIME’s guide to the real people and scandals provide useful context.

Which supporting characters matter most?
Molly Ringwald as Joanne Carson
Molly Ringwald plays Joanne Carson, a close companion of Capote during the later part of his life and the former wife of television host Johnny Carson. Joanne is not one of the four core swans. Her role is instead important to the season’s later-period portrait of Capote, when his relationships and personal world are deteriorating.
Treat Williams as William S. “Bill” Paley
Treat Williams plays William S. “Bill” Paley, Babe Paley’s husband and the founder of CBS. Bill connects Babe’s private life to the institutional power of postwar American television and media. Capote’s fictionalized treatment of the Paleys makes the betrayal more than a quarrel between friends: the private marriage becomes part of a public literary event.
The Television Academy lists Williams among the season’s supporting-acting nominees for his portrayal of William Paley. The same Television Academy awards record lists the season’s acting and directing nominations.
Joe Mantello as Jack Dunphy
Joe Mantello plays Jack Dunphy, Capote’s longtime partner. Dunphy provides a counterpoint to the society women: he belongs to Capote’s intimate domestic and romantic life, not to the hostess circle whose secrets supply the author’s social and literary currency. Their relationship exposes Capote’s loneliness, dependence, and difficulty separating affection from performance.

Russell Tovey plays John O’Shea, a younger man involved with Capote during the later timeline. The series uses O’Shea to dramatize Capote’s instability and self-destructive relationships after his social exile. Historical reporting notes that the television series takes dramatic liberties with O’Shea’s portrayal, so specific behavior and motives should be attributed to the show rather than presented as confirmed biography.
Are Ann Woodward and Joanne Carson swans?
Ann Woodward and Joanne Carson are important women in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, but neither should be casually grouped with the four central swans. The core group is Babe Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill. Woodward is tied to the season’s darkest literary and ethical consequences, while Carson belongs chiefly to Capote’s later personal history.

| Slim Keith | Core swan | Represents sharp social judgment and a less sentimental response to Capote |
| C.Z. Guest | Core swan | Shows the group’s different forms of taste and social establishment |
| Lee Radziwill | Core swan | Connects the circle to celebrity, politics, and aristocratic glamour |
| Ann Woodward | Important related figure | Her story becomes central to the moral consequences of Capote’s writing |
| Joanne Carson | Later-life companion | Helps portray Capote’s personal decline and changing relationships |
What did Capote publish about the swans?
Capote planned Answered Prayers as a major novel about society and human behavior. In 1975, Esquire published “La Côte Basque, 1965,” a thinly veiled fictionalization that exposed recognizable private material associated with Capote’s wealthy friends. The publication damaged his relationships with the swans and contributed to his exclusion from the social world he had cultivated.
The distinction between literature and biography is essential here. Capote did not publish a straightforward nonfiction report; he used fictionalization, altered presentation, and recognizable social details. At the same time, the people around him could identify the implied subjects. The season’s conflict therefore concerns both artistic ambition and the consequences of converting confidences into entertainment.

How accurate is Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans?
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is a dramatized adaptation based on Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women, not a documentary reconstruction. The safest way to describe disputed scenes, dialogue, timelines, motivations, and relationships is “the series portrays,” “the drama suggests,” or “the show reimagines.”
The historical framework is real: Capote cultivated friendships with prominent New York women, planned Answered Prayers, and published “La Côte Basque, 1965” in 1975. The adaptation then shapes that framework into an eight-episode character drama. Reporting on the real people specifically notes dramatic liberties, including the treatment of John O’Shea. Vogue’s cast-versus-real-life comparison is useful for separating the performers’ roles from their historical counterparts.
What should you read after watching?
The most direct companion is the book behind Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. The nonfiction book is the source named for the adaptation and is the best next step for readers who want more historical context about Capote and the women around him.
Readers interested in the literary scandal can also read Answered Prayers after watching. Capote’s work should be described accurately: Penguin Random House identifies it as unfinished, so it is not a completed novel that simply reproduces the television season’s plot.

The season received ten Emmy nominations and won Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for its pilot. Tom Hollander and Naomi Watts received lead acting nominations, Diane Lane and Treat Williams received supporting acting nominations, and Gus Van Sant received a directing nomination. The Television Academy’s awards database is the authoritative source for those nominations and the costume-design win.

FX’s official crew page also lists Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, and Scott Robertson as executive producers.

Is Feud: Capote vs. The Swans historically accurate?
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is based on Laurence Leamer’s nonfiction book Capote’s Women, but the television season dramatizes events. Dialogue, chronology, motivations, and some character details should not be treated as documentary fact.
What book caused the Capote and swans scandal?
Answered Prayers was Truman Capote’s unfinished novel about society and human behavior. The 1975 publication of the excerpt “La Côte Basque, 1965” exposed recognizable private material and helped destroy Capote’s relationships with the swans.
The Bottom Line
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans works as a cast-and-character drama because every relationship carries two meanings: personal intimacy and possible literary material. Tom Hollander’s Capote is at the center, but Babe Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, Lee Radziwill, Ann Woodward, and the supporting figures each reveal a different cost of Capote’s access.
