FBI Season 7, Episode 3 Review: One Subplot Saves an Average Episode

“Détente” serves up a familiar FBI bombing investigation, but Scola’s struggle to find a partner and OA’s history with Clay give the hour its strongest character interest.

FBI Season 7, Episode 3, “Détente,” is an average procedural built around targeted bombings in Queens and the threat of a gang war. Its most promising material is away from the case: Scola’s effort to find a new partner gives the episode a personal thread, while OA and his old Army friend Clay bring a sharper question of loyalty and career choice.

What happens in “Détente”?

“Détente” aired in the United States on October 29, 2024. CBS’s Season 7 episode guide identifies it as Episode 3; “Doubted” is Episode 4. The case starts with a bombing at a Queens restaurant. As more targeted bombings raise fears of a citywide gang war, a tip from OA’s former Army friend Clay redirects the team toward an unexpected, powerful foe.

The premise gives the investigation urgency, but the case remains familiar procedural territory: a chain of attacks, a looming escalation and a lead that reframes the threat. Clay’s connection to OA is the element that gives the case a personal angle, rather than letting it play solely as a sequence of investigative developments.

Why Scola’s partner search is the episode’s strongest thread

The partner search is the episode’s clearest counterweight to its case plot. CBS’s synopsis says Scola continues to struggle to find a new partner, making the problem an explicit parallel storyline rather than incidental office business. It gives the episode a character-level concern: a new pairing is not just a staffing fix, but a question of trust and fit in work where partners rely on each other.

That thread is the best reason the episode rises above an entirely routine hour. It brings the procedural’s workplace setting into focus and offers a more grounded kind of tension than the case’s citywide stakes. The available episode details establish the search, but not its outcome, so the review’s strength lies in the material’s function rather than a claim about where Scola ends up.

OA and Clay add useful personal tension

Clay’s lead matters to the investigation, but his presence also carries a separate professional complication: a recap by The Review Geek reports that he tries to recruit OA to Pyramid Security Group. That approach creates a more intimate tension than the bombings alone. OA is weighing a relationship with someone from his Army past alongside the possibility of a different professional path.

The episode’s case and character strands therefore intersect in Clay, though the material does not make the entire hour feel equally distinctive. The recruitment attempt supplies an appealing personal stake; it does not by itself transform the investigation into something unusually complex.

Jubal’s family conversation offers another character beat

The same recap notes that Jubal’s son is considering Georgetown with an eye toward becoming an FBI agent. It is a small family conversation rather than a major case development, but it gives the episode a glimpse of how the Bureau’s work shapes the next generation’s ambitions. It is worthwhile connective material, though less central to the episode’s appeal than Scola’s partner search or OA’s history with Clay.

Verdict: a serviceable case, lifted by character work

“Détente” delivers a recognizable FBI investigation with a clear threat, while its more memorable interest comes from the characters’ work and relationships. Scola’s search for a partner is the episode’s most effective subplot because it makes a professional transition feel personal. OA and Clay’s history adds a second useful layer, while Jubal’s family scene broadens the hour without overtaking it. The result is solid rather than exceptional: an average case episode with enough character material to make it more engaging.
