Its 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2023, marking five decades of multigenerational programs and neighborhood service. What is the Fatima Family Center?
Fatima Family Center is a community-serving center in Hough, Cleveland, connected to Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Cleveland. The Diocese describes it as an anchor of the neighborhood. The center began in 1973 as an outreach and pastoral counseling ministry of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Catholic Charities later developed its 26,000-square-foot facility, dedicated in 2000. The Diocese’s 2023 account and the FBI’s 2018 award announcement describe this institutional history.
An earlier predecessor
The center’s roots extend further back. Case Western Reserve University’s Encyclopedia of Cleveland History traces an earlier Our Lady of Fatima Center, opened by Brother Anselm Deehr to feed people and respond to material hardship. That account gives a 1970 founding date, while the Diocese and FBI identify 1973 as the establishment of Fatima Family Center. The dates refer to different points in the institution’s history: an earlier predecessor and the current center’s stated founding.
What services has the center offered?
Accounts from 2018 and 2023 describe services for children, teens, adults, families, and older adults. Program details and schedules can change, so these descriptions establish the center’s range of work, not a guarantee that each activity is currently available.

Children and teens
The Diocese’s 2023 anniversary report describes homework help, summer camps, field trips, recreation, cultural and developmental activities, and leadership opportunities. It lists a kids club for ages 5–13 and a teen leadership program for ages 13–16. Catholic Charities’ center profile describes summer camp activities that combine education and physical activity, along with trips, meals, and scholarships.
Adults, families, and older adults
The Diocese’s account also lists parenting classes, health screenings, food pantry distributions, a weight room, computer access and classes, and supportive services for families. Catholic Charities describes weekday and evening programming for adults and seniors, including book clubs, technology courses, and exercise. The Diocese reports social activities for older adults.

Why does Hough’s perspective matter?
Hough should be understood through the people who live and work there, not reduced to the neighborhood’s history of the 1966 uprising. In a 2016 report, Ideastream Public Media recorded residents and people connected to the center discussing the area’s reputation, community life, and changes they had observed. Those comments are attributed, date-specific perspectives rather than current neighborhood statistics. Read the Ideastream report for those voices and context.
The center’s work is one part of Hough’s community story: its documented programs range from children’s recreation and academic support to food assistance and older-adult activities. The sources describe services and institutional history, but do not provide a longitudinal evaluation that quantifies the center’s impact on Hough over 50 years.
What is known about the 50th-anniversary celebration?
The Diocese reported that the center marked its 50th anniversary in 2023 with a block party on July 28. A Mass planned as part of the celebration was moved indoors because of weather. Bishop Edward Malesic’s remarks connected the anniversary to the center’s Catholic mission and its place in the neighborhood. The Diocese published its account of the event.
Is there a documentary about the center?
The sources available for this article do not verify the documentary’s official title, production, release or premiere date, runtime, or where it can be watched. That uncertainty does not establish that a film does not exist. A confirmed listing or announcement from Fatima Family Center, Catholic Charities, the Diocese, or the filmmakers would be needed to identify it reliably.

What the 50-year record can—and cannot—show
Institutional accounts document the center’s 1973 founding, its facility, and examples of programs serving different age groups. They establish a sustained community presence and a broad service mix, but they do not quantify cumulative residents served, outcomes across five decades, or the center’s effect on neighborhood-level conditions. The documented history is meaningful on its own; it should not be presented as a measured impact evaluation.
