The lighthearted TikTok drew attention for the unusual show of solidarity, though the family never pinned down whether Dad meant to comfort the dog, make everyone laugh, or both.
Why Ollie was wearing a cone
Ollie, a Labrador retriever, had recently undergone surgery to remove a lump from his eyelid. In the March 22, 2022 TikTok, he sits on a couch wearing an Elizabethan collar—commonly called an E-collar or cone—beside his owner’s father, who is wearing one as well. Daily Paws reported on April 8, 2022 that the video had received more than 3.5 million views at that time; that is a dated figure, not a current view count.
Alex, Ollie’s owner, told iHeartDogs that Ollie was healing and had been cleared, but still needed the cone while his stitches healed: “He has healed well and had the all-clear, but needed to wear the cone to protect his eyelid whilst the stitches healed.”
Why Ollie’s dad put on a cone
The gesture is the video’s joke and its sweet center: Ollie was not the only one on the couch in a cone. But Alex did not claim to know exactly what her father intended. She described him as someone who likes making people laugh, then said she was unsure whether he put it on to amuse the family or genuinely to help Ollie feel better. In her account, the dog seemed happier, and the moment made the family laugh.

Daily Paws characterized the act as funny solidarity and suggested the father hoped to make Ollie feel less lonely. That is the report’s interpretation, not proof of what Ollie felt or of his father’s precise motive. Alex’s comments leave room for both affection and humor.
What a recovery cone does
An Elizabethan collar is protective equipment intended to stop a dog from licking or chewing a wound, surgical site, or dressing, and from scratching at the face or head. Interfering with a healing area can delay healing or cause injury, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. The veterinarian’s instructions should determine how long a dog wears one.

A soft collar or recovery suit may work for some situations, but the right option depends on the body area to protect and whether the dog can still reach it; ask the veterinarian before switching.
