Who is the villain in Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, is the film’s primary external threat. Disney’s official synopsis says the space god plans to devour Earth and everyone on it. Silver Surfer, played by Julia Garner, is his Herald. Disney’s film page describes the story as unfolding in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world and lists a PG-13 rating, a runtime of 1 hour 55 minutes, and a July 25, 2025 release.

Why Galactus, not Doctor Doom?
Director Matt Shakman said, “We didn’t consider making Doom the villain.” In a TechRadar interview, he explained that Doom had been the villain in the previous Fantastic Four films and that he wanted to focus on the family and its four members. Shakman said Galactus was chosen after the filmmakers considered other possible villains.
The distinction is about story function: Galactus is the immediate planetary danger in First Steps. Doom is the character positioned to connect the Fantastic Four to the wider Avengers story.

Is Doctor Doom in First Steps?
A SuperHeroHype post-credits explainer reports that Doctor Doom appears in a mid-credits scene, linking the film to Avengers: Doomsday. Disney has not published an official account of that scene’s specific events, so the appearance and its mechanics should be understood as reported scene details, not as part of Disney’s official synopsis.
That report does not establish a personal history between this version of Reed Richards and Doom. It is safest to read the scene as a crossover setup rather than assume details about their relationship that have not been confirmed.

How does the film connect to Avengers: Doomsday?
Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, describing Galactus and Silver Surfer as the threat in the Fantastic Four film at the same time. Marvel’s announcement therefore established two distinct roles: Galactus threatens Earth in First Steps, while Downey’s Doom belongs to the Avengers crossover.
The Fantastic Four are also part of the announced Doomsday cast. D23’s March 26, 2025 announcement included Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, as well as Downey, and identified Downey’s role as Victor von Doom. That announcement originally listed a May 1, 2026 release date; it is superseded by Disney’s current listing of December 18, 2026. Disney’s current film page identifies Downey as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom and features the Fantastic Four characters and actors in its image captions.
