Fantastic Beasts 4 has not been confirmed. Three films have been released, despite a five-film plan announced in 2016, and director David Yates described the franchise as “parked” in 2023. In 2024, Eddie Redmayne said audiences had probably seen the last of Newt Scamander on screen, as far as he knew, while Jude Law said the series was on hold. Those comments point to an inactive franchise, but they are not an official cancellation announcement.
Is Fantastic Beasts 4 happening?
There is no confirmed fourth film in the sources available. No release date, production start, cast, script, or synopsis has been announced in those reports. The most accurate status is that the franchise has been described as parked or on hold; neither statement establishes that a fourth film is in active development or that it has been officially cancelled.
Why did fans expect five films?
J.K. Rowling announced a five-film plan at a promotional event in 2016, according to the Los Angeles Times. That plan helps explain the expectation of two more films, but an announced intention is not confirmation that those sequels were greenlit or remain in development.
So far, the series has produced three films:
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
What have the director and cast said?
David Yates: the franchise was “parked”
In an October 2023 interview with the Los Angeles Times, director David Yates said, “It’s all just parked,” adding that the team “just needed to stop and pause and take it easy.” The newspaper reported that Warner Bros. declined to comment and that Yates had not had in-depth conversations with Warner Bros., Rowling, or producer David Heyman about a fourth film at that time.

Eddie Redmayne: probably the last of Newt, as far as he knew
In October 2024, Redmayne responded to a question about whether audiences had probably seen the last of Newt on screen. The Independent reported his answer: “That was a very frank answer, but yeah. And that’s as far as I know. I mean, you’d have to speak to the people at Warner Bros and JK Rowling, but as far as I know, that’s it.” His wording reflects what he knew, rather than an announcement from the studio.
Jude Law: on hold, with no horizon in sight
Law told Variety, as quoted by the Independent, “I know it’s certainly on hold. My guess would be that, now that they’re doing Harry Potter as a TV show, they’ll probably put their energy into that. I certainly haven’t heard that there’s anything on the horizon.” His thought about the TV series is his own guess; it is not a Warner Bros. explanation or confirmation of the franchise’s plans.
Is Fantastic Beasts 4 cancelled?
The sources cited here contain no official cancellation statement. Yates’s description of the franchise as parked and the actors’ comments about a hold or a likely end for Newt indicate uncertainty and inactivity, but they do not prove that the project has been formally cancelled. Nor can interviews rule out private development or a later announcement.

The available reporting does not confirm a plot. The Los Angeles Times described The Secrets of Dumbledore as ending with a setup for a possible larger conflict involving Newt Scamander, Albus Dumbledore, and Gellert Grindelwald. That describes the third film’s ending, not a confirmed storyline for a fourth movie.
