Spoilers for “The Wrangler.” In Season 2, Episode 5, Lucy and the Ghoul reach New Vegas, but their uneasy partnership breaks in the city: the Ghoul admits he used Lucy to pressure Hank for information about his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Janey, then shoots her with a sleeping dart. Meanwhile, pre-war flashbacks show Robert House confronting a future he cannot reliably predict. The episode aired January 14, 2026, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
How Lucy and the Ghoul arrive in New Vegas
“The Wrangler” is Season 2, Episode 5 of Fallout. After traveling through the Mojave, Lucy and the Ghoul reach New Vegas, a destination with its own dangers and a long history in the franchise. The city is not simply a reward for surviving the road: the Strip and Freeside present contrasting sides of a place where danger and community coexist. PC Gamer’s recap describes three Deathclaws on the Strip and a busier community in Freeside.
The contrast matters for Lucy’s story. The city offers more than another threat to evade; it tests what she has learned from traveling with someone who treats survival as a matter of calculation. Jonathan Nolan, executive producer, told the Los Angeles Times: “As we get closer to Vegas … you really start to get to see how much [the Ghoul has] rubbed off on her.”
Why the Ghoul betrays Lucy
The episode’s most consequential turn is personal. The Ghoul tells Lucy that he used her as leverage with Hank because he wants information about Barbara and Janey. He then shoots her with a sleeping dart. His goal is not to punish Lucy; it is to make progress in his search for his family, even if that means treating her trust as a tool. TheWrap’s interview with the showrunner identifies the bargain and the betrayal.

For Lucy, the revelation overturns the meaning she had given their time together. Showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet told TheWrap: “Lucy feels like they have a real friendship developing. He got her out of real trouble in Episode 3 and has been her spiritual guide, in a sense, to the Wasteland through other episodes. She really feels like he cares about her at some level.” Her conclusion is painful precisely because the relationship had begun to feel like more than a survival arrangement: “It’s very jarring for her to realize that he’s still using her.”
A return to their Season 1 pattern
The betrayal is not an entirely new side of the Ghoul. Robertson-Dworet connects it to their earlier dynamic, when he used Lucy as bait for a Gulper. In that light, Episode 5 is less a sudden change of heart than a return to a pattern Lucy had reason to believe they had moved beyond. The Ghoul can help her and still put his own objective first.

That leaves Lucy with an uncomfortable question: has her time with him taught her to navigate the Wasteland, or trained her to accept the same hard compromises he makes? Nolan told the Los Angeles Times: “That fundamental question of ‘Is she willing to to break some of the same rules that he is?’ is one of the driving questions of the narrative.” The episode makes that question immediate by showing the human cost of his choices.
What the flashbacks reveal about Cooper Howard and Robert House
The pre-war story expands the episode beyond Lucy and the Ghoul’s journey. Flashbacks give more room to Cooper Howard and Robert House, linking private family concerns to House’s effort to model and control the future. As The A.V. Club’s recap describes it, House is troubled by the limits of his predictions and focuses on Janey’s birth as an unexplained variable.

That uncertainty is significant, but it is not proof that House knows who caused the apocalypse or that Janey is responsible for it. The episode presents a problem in House’s calculations, not a complete explanation of what happened. His confidence in prediction and control is set against a future that no longer makes sense to him.

New Vegas connects the television story to Fallout: New Vegas, the 2010 game set in the same location. The city is therefore both a franchise landmark and a new test for Lucy, rather than a requirement that viewers know the game’s plot. The Los Angeles Times reported on the production’s effort to bring New Vegas to the screen; Amazon’s season announcement also identifies New Vegas as part of Season 2’s setting.

That setting gives the episode two scales at once: a larger world of competing dangers and communities, and a close-up reckoning over whether Lucy can trust her companion. The city’s history enriches the destination, but the betrayal gives the arrival its emotional force.
