The Ghoul’s rescue by a super mutant is less a friendly reunion than a forced bargain: the stranger offers a common enemy in the Enclave, and the Ghoul refuses to trust him. That uneasy encounter sits alongside a pre-war dispute between Barb and Cooper over what they would do to protect their daughter, tying the episode’s survival story to the choices that helped set the catastrophe in motion.
What happens to the Ghoul?
In Freeside, the Ghoul is impaled and struggling to hold onto his identity when a super mutant finds him and takes him to shelter. The mutant proposes an alliance against the Enclave, making the enemy explicit in the Ghoul’s storyline. The Ghoul rejects the offer. Rather than leave him behind or accept his refusal, the mutant knocks him unconscious and moves him to keep the hideout’s location secret.

The encounter is the episode’s clearest new “friend” hook, but it is coercive, not a settled partnership. The Ghoul has been rescued, yet he has little control over what happens next. The episode’s plot is summarized in PC Gamer’s spoiler-marked recap, published January 21, 2026; it is a secondary account, not an official transcript, so reconstructed dialogue should not be treated as exact.
Why do Barb and Cooper clash in the pre-war scenes?
The episode cuts back to the pre-war period, where Barb attends Vault-Tec meetings and discusses the company’s plans with a representative of Robert House. Vault-Tec’s planning includes a mind-control device, while House is promised access to cold fusion in return for help with his own project.
#1 Best Overall
Cooper and Barb argue over the plan, and the dispute turns personal. Each challenges the other over how far they would go to protect their daughter. Barb’s response to a past encounter with genuine monstrosity becomes a turning point in their argument. The scenes connect the Ghoul’s present-day struggle to a past in which people made choices under the banner of protecting those they loved.
What happens to Lucy, Hank, Maximus, and Thaddeus?
Lucy and Hank
Lucy brings Hank into her custody, keeping their conflict moving while the Ghoul’s storyline unfolds elsewhere.
Maximus and Thaddeus
Maximus and Thaddeus abandon their power armor after discovering that it contains Brotherhood trackers. They retain the cold fusion artifact, but disagree about what to do with it: sell it, or find someone worthy of receiving it.
