Wilzig, CX404 and the Enclave facility
The episode opens with Wilzig working inside an Enclave facility, where he handles experiments on dogs. He pulls a puppy that has failed a weight test out of the program, names it CX404, and keeps it. When an Enclave colleague discovers what he has done, Wilzig flees with the dog. Before he leaves, the episode also establishes that he has injected himself with a strange glowing pill or substance. That detail becomes the episode’s central mystery.
Lucy’s first night outside Vault 33
Lucy explores the coast beyond Vault 33 and finds the remains of a family linked to Vault-Tec’s Plan D poison, an early sign of how the surface treats people from the vault. She spends her first night outside alone until Wilzig and CX404 find her. The dog helps save her from a giant mutated cockroach, and Wilzig tells her that if she stays above ground, she will have to adapt quickly.

Maximus in the settlement
Maximus, the Brotherhood of Steel initiate, tries to impose order on a settlement. He learns that the dispute he is trying to settle began with a man sexually assaulting chickens. The scene is brief, but it shows how quickly the wasteland breaks the clean rules Maximus has been trained to follow.
Filly: Ma June, Wilzig and the Ghoul
Lucy reaches Filly and asks Ma June what she knows about Lee Moldaver, who led the raiders that took Lucy’s father. Ma June tells her the surface is no place for someone from a vault. Wilzig arrives looking for Ma June and again urges Lucy to go home. His familiarity with Vault 33 makes Lucy wary of him.

The ambush
The Ghoul appears in town, pursuing Wilzig for a bounty, and a gunfight breaks out. Wilzig is badly injured and CX404 is wounded. Maximus arrives in power armor to challenge the Ghoul, but he cannot control the suit well enough to win. He mishandles the thrusters and is flung away from the fight.
Ma June’s deal
Ma June reveals that Moldaver paid her to transport Wilzig. At Wilzig’s insistence, she sends Lucy with him, offering her a route toward her father. Later, the Ghoul heals CX404 so the dog can help him track Wilzig, which sets up the journey that follows.

The road to Moldaver and Wilzig’s death
As they travel, Wilzig explains that the pill he took is Vault-Tec’s Plan D and that his injuries are fatal. He asks Lucy to remove his head and take it to Moldaver. He says this will change the future. The episode, as summarized in the Wikipedia reference, attributes this idea to him in dialogue, and the wording should be checked against the episode itself before it is quoted exactly. Wilzig dies, and Lucy, horrified, accepts the task.
The episode ends on that decision. It does not resolve what Moldaver will do with the head, which leaves the next episode to pick up the mission.

How the episode fits the franchise
Prime Video describes the series as based on the Fallout video game franchise. That establishes the games as the source of the world, but it does not show that “The Target” adapts the plot of any particular game. Viewers who want the source material should treat the games as background, not as a guide to this episode.
