Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature. Mia Goth plays both Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein, while Felix Kammerer, Christoph Waltz, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, Lars Mikkelsen and David Bradley round out the principal cast. The film adapts Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel and gives both Victor and the Creature a share of its story.
Who is in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?
Netflix’s official cast guide identifies the principal actors and their roles:
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Oscar Isaac | Victor Frankenstein | A brilliant, egotistical scientist whose experiments make him an academic outcast. |
| Jacob Elordi | The Creature | Victor’s creation, assembled from battlefield body parts, who develops a consciousness and identity beyond his maker’s control. |
| Mia Goth | Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein | Elizabeth is engaged to William and grows drawn to the Creature; Claire is Victor and William’s mother. |
| Felix Kammerer | William Frankenstein | Victor’s younger brother and the family’s favored child; he is engaged to Elizabeth when he and Victor reunite. |
| Christoph Waltz | Heinrich Harlander | A wealthy arts patron and arms dealer during the Crimean War who funds Victor’s work for his own reasons. |
| Christian Convery | Victor Frankenstein at age 10 | The troubled young Victor grows up with an abusive father and an absent mother. |
| Charles Dance | Leopold Frankenstein | Victor and William’s cold, controlling father. |
| Lars Mikkelsen | Captain Anderson | An Arctic ship captain who finds a frostbitten Victor and hears his account. |
| David Bradley | The Blind Man | An elderly man the Creature encounters while wandering. |
Why does Mia Goth play two characters?
Goth plays both Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein, not Elizabeth alone. Elizabeth is connected to William and becomes drawn to the Creature; Claire belongs to the Frankenstein family as Victor and William’s mother. The roles place Goth in two different parts of the family’s story.
How does the film tell the story?
Netflix describes Frankenstein as an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. Its structure moves from an icebound “Prelude” into “Victor’s Tale” and “The Creature’s Tale,” echoing the novel’s frame narrative and shifting perspectives. That arrangement gives the creation room to be a character with a perspective of his own, rather than treating the film only as Victor’s story. Netflix’s feature on del Toro’s adaptation discusses his approach to making Shelley’s story his own.

What does the film’s production design look like?
The story’s period setting and Gothic scale are reflected in the production design. Netflix’s production feature reports that production designer Tamara Deverell built Victor’s laboratory inside an abandoned water tower, with marble floors, a custom metal spiral staircase and a large circular window. Costume designer Kate Hawley researched the mid-19th century and drew on entomology, botany, beetles and cellular structures for Elizabeth’s costumes.
