The show is set in the Fallout universe, but it is not a direct adaptation of one game. Executive producer Todd Howard told Amazon: “We didn’t want to adapt a specific game. We wanted to move the timeline forward and tell a new story in the world because the world of Fallout has always been the main character in our games.” In the same Amazon feature, Jonathan Nolan said he loved the games’ “ambition” and “oddness”; he also said he had played Fallout 3.
