Derek Turnbow, the classmate who starts out as Holly Wheeler’s bully, becomes an unlikely ally after Vecna targets him. His shift from “Dipshit Derek” to “Delightful Derek” makes him one of the season’s most immediately vivid characters. That is an argument for his appeal, not a consensus ranking—and it also points to a larger weakness: in a crowded ensemble, a sharply drawn new character can stand out while familiar story patterns and limited room for development make other arcs feel less distinct.
Who is Dipshit Derek in Stranger Things season 5?
Derek Turnbow is Holly Wheeler’s classmate, played by Jake Connelly. Netflix describes him as rude and bullying before Vecna’s threat changes his position in the story: Derek becomes an unlikely ally. The transformation gives the character a clear shape quickly—first abrasive, then unexpectedly useful—without requiring him to displace the show’s established leads.
His comic edge is part of the point. Variety describes Derek as comic relief and places him among familiar character types, including the reformed bully. But the role also becomes more than a single joke: the season gives him a change in allegiance that affects Holly’s story.
Why does Derek become an ally?
Derek’s turn follows Vecna targeting him and Joyce supporting him. Connelly described the change in Netflix Tudum’s interview as: “He goes from Dipshit Derek to Delightful Derek.” He also said Joyce helped Derek believe in himself. That is the actor’s account of the character’s arc; it frames the change as a response to support rather than a sudden switch in personality.

The role’s expansion was not necessarily the plan from the start. In a November 29, 2025, Netflix Tudum interview, co-creator Matt Duffer said Derek was initially conceived as a generic bully. He credited Connelly’s charm and humor with prompting the writers to give the character more to do: “He was just so charming and hilarious that we started to gradually increase the size of his role throughout the season.” Netflix’s subheading calls the result a move from “a stereotypical bully” to “something much more compelling”; that is the publication’s framing, not a quotation from a named speaker.
Why Derek can feel like the season’s best character
Calling Derek the season’s “best character” is a judgment, not a measurable fact. A useful case for it rests on four questions: Does the character become legible quickly? Does the change feel connected to events and relationships? Do the scenes matter to the central story? And does the ensemble leave the character enough space to develop?

- He is legible fast. Bullying makes his initial role plain; his later actions give the audience a reason to reassess him.
- His change has a relationship behind it. Connelly specifically points to Joyce’s support, while the threat from Vecna changes the stakes around Derek.
- His arc serves Holly’s story. Derek’s shift matters because it changes who can help her, rather than existing only as a detached comic aside.
- His contrast makes him memorable. The distance between “Dipshit” and “Delightful” gives the arc a compact comic hook.
A separate character ranking also singles Derek out as a standout new character, emphasizing the turn from abrasive bully to someone who helps Holly. That is one reviewer’s opinion, not evidence of a wider audience consensus. The stronger claim is narrower: Derek’s crisp premise and visible change make him easy to remember.
What Derek’s success says about Stranger Things 5’s biggest problem
The season’s “biggest problem” depends on what a viewer values. The critical case is not that Derek objectively exposes a flaw, but that his vividness can make the show’s uneven character balance easier to notice. If a new supporting character is defined and changed in a few clear beats while a large returning ensemble competes for attention, the contrast can make familiar arcs feel repetitive or underdeveloped.

Variety’s review argues that the season leans on nostalgia and inherited archetypes without deepening its characters enough as they age. Derek fits one of those archetypes—the bully who becomes an ally—so his appeal does not erase that criticism. It sharpens the question: does a familiar turn feel earned because the character’s relationships and circumstances change, or does it simply repeat a pattern the series has used before?
Ars Technica’s finale review offers a related but mixed assessment. It describes Joyce turning Derek into an ally and criticizes the season’s many storylines as overstuffed, while also praising elements including Holly and Max’s relationship and particular character moments. The complaint, then, is not that nothing works; it is that a crowded story can leave less room for the moments that do.

Derek’s arc is a useful test case for that tension. His scenes have a compact progression, a comic identity, and a connection to Holly’s immediate danger. The larger ensemble has to distribute attention among many established characters and plotlines. When the new character’s change reads clearly but other threads feel familiar or compressed, the imbalance can make the season’s storytelling limits more apparent.

- Distinctiveness: Can you describe what makes the character’s scenes different from another character’s?
- Earned development: Do events and relationships explain the change, or does the plot merely announce it?
- Story impact: Does the character’s presence alter what happens to the central characters?
- Room to grow: Does the season give the character enough time for a change to land without crowding out other arcs?
By those measures, Derek is an effective new presence, especially in the way his support for Holly follows his initial hostility. Whether he is the season’s best character remains a matter of taste. The broader concern—that familiar patterns and an overfull ensemble can limit depth—is a critical interpretation supported by reviewers, not a definitive verdict on every viewer’s experience.
